Insomnia is a Blessing-Curse
Two hours sleep in about the past forty-eight.
I can't sleep no matter what I do. Ideas, brightly-bejeweled, biwinged butterflies, breeze through my brain. Possibly dynasties, potential stories. Posts planned. The carpet beneath my feet is like me, tired and a pale brown. I pace the rooms of the house, searching for slumber. She won't be found. Work in six hours. By then, if I haven't slept, I'll be a resident alien in Lalaland.

Suicane: Interesting image especially considering I just spent the last 20 minutes flipping through the pictures thread. However, I fear very much for the fence outside.
Danny: Mm, no, not because of FOFC. I'm just prone to random bouts of intense insomnia, and I was due apparently, since it's been about 6 months.

Thanks. I'll probably crash at some point after work. Let's see, I last woke up at 10:30 am yesterday I think after getting my two hours of sleep in. It's about 7:15 now. So yeah, I'll hit the 24 hour mark in about 3 hours. My record is somewhere around two and a half days, so like 72 hours. That was an interesting series of hours, let me tell you. Time ceased to have any semblance of meaning and, rather like this particular period, ideas flowed through me like water. I'm trying to remember when precisely that was... back about two or three years ago, I think. The problem is that I never write down this stuff when I'm in these phases, so what I do remember after I wake up after finally getting some sleep is some brittle outer crust out of what was once a full, iridiscent coruncopia of thought. Ah well, one of these days (or nights is probably more accurate) I'll learn.

As the cliche says, the road to Hell is paved with good intentions. That reminds me, though I haven't actually read it yet, I noticed you have a thread in the Dynasty Forum where you're writing a novel. How is that going? I keep getting novel ideas but I never follow through with them. My greatest strength is in modern settings, I tend to find. I don't have the patience or energy necessary for the research and careful eye needed to complete historical pieces. Although, now that I think about it, if I had a dollar for every time somebody told me I should write romance novels, I'd be quite the wealthy man by now. Every now and then I get the notion that I should go along with that idea and try to elevate the romance to a respected literary form. Then I come to my senses and realize that I'd just be selling my soul and making gobs of money while hating myself for squandering my talent. Immediately after that I tell myself to quit remembering The Beautiful and the Damned so well and recall Fitzgerald's better works with greater ease. It never works, though. Probably something to do with the natural human inclination to remember tragic events better than happy ones. Of course, if I get started on that, this'll turn into a mini-thesis paper and I'd like to try and see if I can't squeeze an hour of napping in before work. The alarm clock in my bedroom is fast. So when I saw 7:57, I found mysef dissecting the numbers as I often do when I'm in this frame of mind. The 7s were turned around to form hockey sticks. The : became two pucks, the bottom one kept in reserve as a spare in case something happened to the first puck. We needed two goals, so I broke the 5 in half and formed two goals out of it, one set behind the first hockey stick 7, the other behind the other. And then it was game on. I never did find out who won though, because I gave up trying to sleep and came back here.

Neat post, Izulde, I've had (fortunately rare) bouts of insomnia in my life, and it is strange how sometimes that whole time turns into this weird stream of consciousness experience. I work midnight - 8 am anyway so I'm familiar with the night seeming like it's some kind of alien territory that only a few people experience.
Maybe you can appreciate the lyrics to the song Daysleeper by REM, I know I do. hxxp://www.lyrics007.com/R.E.M.%20Lyrics/Daysleeper%20Lyrics.html |

Peregrine: Thank you kindly. And yes, I can definitely identify with those lyrics. Barenaked Ladies' "Who Needs Sleep" is another good one. Though I can't remember them verbatim offhand, one particular snatch has a tendency to pop in my head fairly frequently.
My hands are locked up tight in fists My mind is racing, filled with lists Of things to do and things I've done Another sleepless night's begun It was my theme song back in the days when my vampiric sleeping patterns caused me a lot of trouble on top of other difficulties I was having in my life at that time, before I got my act together. Stream-of-consciousness is an excellent way to put it. It's one of the things I love most about James Joyce's writing, is that style. Suicane: It's always good to have posts get love. Thank you again.

That it can, though I've never taken the stuff. My brain chemistry is questionable at best to begin with and I'm not going to risk frying it completely by dropping acid. Besides, sleep deprivation, excessive caffeine, a truly great book, or your favourite legal chemical alterant (i.e. booze, 'bacco), can alter your stream of consciousness enough to fit most peoples' shifted thought-flow needs.

I did 72 hours straight when I was working on CM3 at 'crunch time' (many years ago now) - towards the end I felt quite surreal at times ... Strangely enough I found the night/day cycle naturally picked me up, around 3-4am were the worst, once the sun came up your body perked up and you ticked over again without too much hastle ... (that being said this is NOT recommended working practice ) |

Maybe you could kill your insomnia by watching a movie. May I recommend 'Insomnia?' Also 'The Machinist' is worth checking out.

So, I took your advice and had a 32 oz. Macho Size Cherry Coca-Cola (I figured the cherry flavor would add fiber) at Del Taco this morning. I'm still stopped up. Time to bust out the Metamucil. |
