Moving Day
Today, I leave New Orleans. I'm moving to Greensburg, PA, and I'll be making stops in Memphis, Louisville, and maybe Columbus, OH, along the way. My wife and I had been up for about 18 hours straight and we still had a ton of stuff to pack. I urged her to rest for a couple of hours, and she's currently asleep. The movers will be here in an hour or two, and there's still stuff that needs to be packed. I've now been awake for nearly 20 hours, and I'm not going to get to sleep for at least 5 more. I have no idea how we're going to drive to Memphis while we're so tired, but we'll get it done. All we need is one really good night's sleep, and we'll get that at my mother-in-law's house in Memphis. We just need to get there. We should be hitting the road in 5 or 6 hours (my wife will drive for a couple of hours while I sleep). So long, New Orleans. It's going to be hard leaving home.

I remember this feeling all too well when Mrs. Eaglesfan and I finished our packing at the last minute and then left NJ (my home for 17 plus years of my life) to drive to Atlanta during the night and next day, slept at a relatives, and then drove the rest of the way to New Orleans. I almost had an accident that night (I fell asleep at the wheel for a few seconds) and really believe God protected me (I somehow kept a large moving truck on a very narrow bridge.) In any case, the point is be safe and have a good trip. |

Please don’t fall asleep behind the wheel. I have tried that once and it cannot be recommended.

New Orleans will miss you.
Also, if you feel that tired, just pull over and crash at a Motel 6 for a few hours. $35 for a room and getting a few hours behind on your trip is worth more than taking a chance of dying. |

safe travels. have you sold your house yet? And is it big enough for five kids? I'd love to move to New Orleans, although I have a feeling I'd be an alcoholic within five months.

Ditto on everyones comments, as someone who has fallen asleep at the wheel with a car full of buddies once and having been awoken at the last minute headed toward a concrete median, I urge you to be safe.

Safe trip Pumpy! You'll love it here in Steeler country! I love Greensburg and have wanted to live there in the past. It's just a little too far for a commute into downtown Pittsburgh.

I'm in Memphis for another hour, and then we're heading east-northeast. I thought we were going to stop in Louisville, but we're probably going to stop in Bowling Green (Kentucky) instead. Our last stop before Greensburg should still be Columbus, although I'm not 100% sure about that.
We ended up staying in New Orleans an extra night just because we hadn't gotten enough sleep. We stayed in our empty house and then took off for Memphis yesterday afternoon. We seriously underestimated the job, and we had a metric buttload of trash that we had to clean out of the house before we moved. It took us a few hours. Anyway, we arrived in Memphis around midnight CDT. We intend to drive for no more than 5 hours today (which should get us barely into Kentucky due to the route we're taking). We're going to see the Louisville Slugger museum tomorrow, but we're not going to be sleeping in Louisville. We're just going to check it out for a little while and then head off to Columbus. After over 7 hours of driving last night, we're going to try to do no more than 5 hours over each of the next three days. We intend to do 5 today, 5 tomorrow, and that'll leave us with only 2 or 3 hours left until Greensburg on Monday. It should be OK. As for our house in New Orleans, we were renting, and there's no room for a bunch of kids in that house anyway. It's time to get moving. We're off to Bowling Green, home of the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers!

Limit driving to 5 hours a day? I didn't know such a thing was possible, how come no one ever told me you could drive less then 10 hours straight? Damn company lied to me....
Glad you are taking it nice and easy Pumpy. Enjoy...

Oh yeah, I remember cleaning out an extra ton of garbage and stuff that wouldn't fit in the truck and how that took a few hours longer than planned when we moved from NJ to New Orleans |

Indeed, my wife will be teaching at a university in Greensburg, PA. I didn't really want to leave New Orleans, but I'm now 1000 miles from there, so I guess I'm really gone now. We are currently in a hotel in Columbus, OH. We'll leave here in about 10 hours, and then we'll head 3 hours east to Greensburg. Our furniture will arrive on Tuesday morning, so the only things I'll be missing are cable TV and Internet access, both of which will be installed on Saturday morning. I'll get a lot of XBox time and NHL Eastside Hockey Manager 2005 in during the week, I suppose. I haven't been to a Major League Baseball game in about 15 years, so we might take the 35-mile drive to Pittsburgh to see the Pirates play one day this week (yes, I know that the Pirates barely qualify as "major league").
Overall, it's been an interesting trip, particularly for someone like me who has never travelled much. I saw Kentucky for the first time. It's very green until Louisville, at which point it unsurprisingly becomes very red. The Louisville Slugger museum was great. I learned a lot of about the creation and use of baseball bats, and even my wife liked the trip, and she doesn't understand baseball at all. I drove through Cincinnati and sang the "WKRP in Cincinnati" theme song as I went through. I also thought of Shorty, but he's just so damn hot that I got distracted and accidentally got onto I-75 when I needed I-71. That took us out of our way for a few minutes, and I ended up crossing the Ohio River 3 times because of it. Tomorrow, I will see West Virginia for the first time, albeit very, very briefly. I think we only have to drive through an approximately 8-mile piece of it through Wheeling. Soon after that, we will be at our new home! Thanks for the good wishes, everybody. I'm looking forward to life in a new place, even though I already miss New Orleans. You'll all hear from me again Saturday!

Ohbytheway, the answer to this is no. If I had known you were going to be in New Orleans, I think I might've convinced my wife to let me stay a little longer. Of course, you would've owed me bigtime at that point. You can cook, right?

One other thing to note about Greensburg is that you aren't very far from Latrobe, PA where the Steelers have Training Camp. They are at St. Vincent's College.

Welcome to PA!
I moved from Louisiana last summer and I love it here. Of course, I hated Louisiana, so take that for what it's worth. The Pirates do suck but they have one of the nicest parks in the land. And the tickets are pretty cheap too, so it's not a bad way to spend an afternoon/evening. |

Bump! I'm here in Greensburg. I've been here for nearly a week, but we just got out Internet service set up a couple of hours ago. I have to get used to parking on a hill. We don't have hills in New Orleans. Anyway, everything's fine. I'm back in action at FOFC now. I do need to find a job here in Pennsylvania at some point, though. Urgh.

I've already been warned that if I don't get a job soon, I'll have to spend 40 hours per week looking for a job.

The key is to make it look like you are looking that hard for a job, while you are actually only looking 4 hours a week.
