Ex-CIA director: U.S. faces 'World War IV'
http://www.cnn.com/2003/US/04/03/spr...war/index.html
In part: "As we move toward a new Middle East," Woolsey said, "over the years and, I think, over the decades to come ... we will make a lot of people very nervous." It will be America's backing of democratic movements throughout the Middle East that will bring about this sense of unease, he said. "Our response should be, 'good!'" Woolsey said. Singling out Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and the leaders of Saudi Arabia, he said, "We want you nervous. We want you to realize now, for the fourth time in a hundred years, this country and its allies are on the march and that we are on the side of those whom you -- the Mubaraks, the Saudi Royal family -- most fear: We're on the side of your own people."

While I think democracy has about as much chance in the Middle East as the proverbial snowball, I do love the quote you posted Fritz.

Would that not be a product of leadership?

The recipe for Pax Americana:
The stew of conquering to install a puppet government. Add ruses of clever catch phrases such as freedom and liberate with a dash of human rights sprinkled in for astringency. Use a cheese shredder to slowly add in other events as raison d'etre with little correlation but championed to produce a pleasant aroma. Stir slowly, let simmer then boil to taste. For similar recipe, see also: leperous squids with guns and butter sauce

It does look like that's the road this administration is going down. But it makes me uneasy, too. If we think terrorism is bad now, just wait until we start trying to re-construct the middle east.

From the line of questioning Blair was getting at the lastest question sesion of parliament, we can be sure that Britain will not join us if we go after Syria or Iran next. Blair just barely saved his ass over Iraq with a brilliant speech to parliament. There's no way he can pull his country into another questionable mid-east war.
What's surprising is the way this is being treated as new info. The neo-cons behind the Iraq policy have always seen it as a first step in a radical change of governments throughout the region. Kristol, Woolsey, Perle, Wolfowitz et al. have for years been pushing for the US to use the military to forcibly change the politics of the mid-east. Maybe if we are really lucky we can have never ending war. That will let us really see who's a patriot and who's a traitor.

dead on. there is no possible way that blair could convince this country that there is any plausible reason for a war against syria or iran. because there isn't remotely. |

President Bush laid out very clearly after 9/11 that we would be coming after nations that either supported or harbored terrorists and he was treated like a hero and supported by the world. Now when he stands true to his word he is treated like a villain and supported by virtually nobody.
