Australia is really laying an egg against Serbia in the basketball, just can't buy a basket. Looks like Bronze game vs Spain for us.

A decision is expected Saturday morning. If the ruling stands, it will mark the ninth time since 1995 the U.S. men have been disqualified or failed to get the baton around at the Olympics or world championships.

Damn, sure seems like we make a habit of fucking up the relay.

And look at how good Japan is at passing the baton. They finished 2nd (even before the US DQ'd) despite not having a single sub-10 sprinter. They were also 2nd in the U20 World Championships.

I'll take it back about gold/bronze/etc. Sometimes silver or bronze feels feel like nothing when gold was the clear goal, just go and ask Dafne Schippers' shoes, but today's fourth place finishes for the Dutch women's handball and volleyball teams have been equally, if not even more heartbreaking.

In tournament style events, when you are playing for third, it's medal or nothing. For the gold, even though you lost out on the gold, you still get a prize

Heard the men's team was DQ'd for illegal handoff, or something like that. What made it illegal?

Early handoff outside the designated zone, first touch counts.

Here's my fix for soccer. Fewer players so there is less congestion around the goal, and make the goal wider and higher. Presto! Scoring!

Yes, yes, scoring is the goal. But the american obsession with it is kinda funny. I mean, you go as far as awarding 6(7) points for a single score
Flipping it around, every score matters a ton.

The game was "boring" because it was the 6th 90 minute game in 2 weeks and both teams were tired (and the germans could not rotate at all with like 10-15 eligible players missing) and it then went to overtime.

An NBA regular season game on a 3 in 4 night trip ending 100-97 to me is boring as hell often time, despite there being so many scores.

Shit ending to a great tournament by a makeshift team. Brasil just with way, way more talent on the pitch (i guess 10 of those 18 either have already played or will play withing a year for the Senior Team).

Also: I have actually taken part in an experimental game without offside. Not pretty. Imagine American Football without a line of scrimmage

What a great race by Centrowitz. That last lap there must have been three different guys that tried to get past him, but he kept holding on.

So the three women that look like blokes came 1-2-3 in the 1500, while four of the five that looked like women never figured in the race...

Damn, the belgian 4x400 with 3 brothers (Jonathan, Kevin and Dylan Borlee) almost with the bronze, would have been a cool story. Heck, their sister Olivia won gold with the 4x100 at the 2008 Olympics. Talk about a fast family !

Watching women's TKD US vs FR on USA right now. It's strange and funny seeing them bounce up and down, arms not up, and hug each other alot. Eh, I would prefer more traditional sparring.

Bizarre finish in the freestyle wrestling, as USA's J'den Cox leads 1-0 late in the match, but he is "on the shot clock", due to passivity, meaning he has 30 seconds to score a point or his opponent gets a point (and would win tie match on last point scored). He goes for it, and there's an almighty scramble, but the ref says no score.

The coach challenges the ruling, because, well, it was really close, and even if it was denied (giving Cuba an extra point), Cuba would win anyway. After a LONG period of appeal, the judges decide that Cox DID get the takedown and scored two points. So it goes from 1-1 (Cuba wins on criteria) to 3-0 Cox

The cuban wrestler was so upset with this, he decided not to continue the match (there was only six seconds left), and the referee/judges have no choice but to award Cox the match by DQ.

Centrowitz has tons of experience with indoor running (and was in fact the 2016 World Indoor Champion in the 1500), where positioning is even more important. That undoubtedly helped him here.

yet another bizarre finish in bronze medal wrestling, which involved multiple coaches stripping and throwing shoes.

I wish I could make this up.

I wrestled in high school, and the only thing funnier than the coaches would be your classmates screaming about what you should be doing to the other guy's balls.

Men's soccer in its current format should be excluded from the Olympics anyway. Baseball got excluded for the same thing the MLB did to their own sport as the soccer clubs and associations have done for decades as well.

The coach that just took his shirt and shoes off should get the most flak. If you're going to do this you have to go all the way and take off pants.

I do wonder if a unifed old school Yugoslavia team could knock off the NBA. They'd have a lot of really good players.

I know nothing about distance racing, but I'm curious, did this just happen by accident or did the US set about trying to drastically improve our middle and long distance events?

The Oregon Project and what Mark Wettmore has done at Colorado over the last decade or so has a lot to do with building a comparatively deep talent base for US distance running. Add to that some PED skepticism involving the African nations and this summer may have been the perfect storm.

I also think Alan Webb, despite a disappointing career overall, helped reinvigorate interest in American distance running. In 2001, he became the first high schooler to break the 4 minute mile barrier since 1967. He later ran as low as 3:53 as a high schooler and made national news with appearances on Letterman and other shows. There have now been 4 high schoolers in the past 2 years alone to break the 4 minute barrier.

Well done, Rio! Also, with Tokyo's PM coming out of a Mario tube at the Closing Ceremonies, I am a bit too excited about the Tokyo Olympics in 4 years now.

Loved the whole Mario/Prime Minister bit. That was fantastic.

I really enjoyed the Olympics. More so this year than ever before.

I already miss them on TV.
