Boy, as bad as this is for the Texas program, you have to feel bad for the Tennessee program. They just can't buy a break over the last few years since the Bruce Pearl debacle.

Why would a university, unless they orchestrated it, be responsible for academic improprieties committed while a player was still in high school and before they enrolled?

Wasn't Calipari and Memphis both dinged for the Rose SAT flap?

Yes, but they knew about the SAT thing and played him anyway. I imagine knowingly playing an ineligible player is a pretty big violation even if the school didn't cause or orchestrate the basis for the ineligibility. Of course, I think schools also have gotten dinged for playing players who turn out to be ineligible because they got benefits from some outside source. |

True, but I don't think the allegations are that someone else took their admissions test. Plus, if I remember correctly, even without the SAT flap, Rose would have been declared ineligible due to his brother getting to travel with the team for free.

NJIT replacing Northern Kentucky in the Atlantic Sun this year.
College Basketball's Last Independent Team Finally Has A Home Despite the geography situation, a good fit. What helped hasten the move for them was the fact that the A-Sun was down to 7 teams and anyone they would've tried to get to move up from D2 would've had to wait their transition period out. So this was mostly about expediency as much as anything. But good on NJIT to get into a league finally.

YD, you're always my backup source for low-level conference movement! This'll be in the new season's FBCB mod!

Sweet. NKU to Horizon. NJIT to the A-Sun. Should be the only moves.

Bo Ryan to retire after this season.
Statement from Bo Ryan: Back in the spring, in the days after the national championship game, (UW Director of Athletics) Barry Alvarez and I discussed the possibility of me retiring. I’ve always been told that is not a decision to make right after a season is completed. Barry thankfully encouraged me to take some time to think about it and I have done that. I considered retiring this summer or coaching one more season. I’ve decided to coach one more season with the hope that my longtime assistant Greg Gard eventually becomes the head coach at Wisconsin. I am looking forward to another year with our program, including our players, my terrific assistant coaches, our office staff and everyone who supports Wisconsin basketball here in Madison, around the state and across the country. Bo is no spring chicken so I'm not surprised. I don't know a whole lot about Greg Gard other than he's been with Bo for a while. Wisconsin won't be looking to make a big splash with the replacement so my guess is that it will be Gard.

Is there any reason to believe Tony Bennett would be interested in the Wisconsin job? That would be more of a HR hire, but there are obvious connections.

I'm happy to see Ryan go. Great coach but probably my least favorite coach in all sports.
I hope Wisconsin flubs their next hire.

More like an hour. And NKU is D1 because Kentucky is full of low-tier D1 programs outside of UL and UK. Murray State, Morehead State, Eastern Kentucky and Western Kentucky are all D1 too. 3 in the same conference. |

Grabbed tickets to see LSU and vs the Sydney professional team in a month's time Down Under. Excited to see Simmons for the first time... even if his presence pushed ticket prices up to even beyond a regular season game down here...

Not too sure about that. There's pretty good indicators that his back is still an issue. After his back injury last year, he wasn't anywhere near what he was before. Last I heard, he still was taking time off from basketball in the hopes that the back would heal. |

What did you think Simmons, keeping in mind how new he is to college ball? The team still needs work for sure, LSU is already super thin in the post, and one of starting forwards isn't eligible until December. |

He's more of a wing/point forward than a post. His greatest skill is his ballhandling/passing; he's not just good for someone who's 6'10", he's good period. Also a solid, versatile defender but just like on offense, he's more perimeter-oriented. He's not a rim protector who will rack up huge block numbers, but if the other team's best player is a guard you can credibly stick Simmons on him. His outside shot is kind of funky and not too great. I wouldn't expect a huge adjustment period from him and think he'll have a Lamar Odom type of impact. |
