Like "I'd like an ask"? As in place of a question? I'm trying to picture the context.

Also, I'm now working with one of the "I'd like to axe you a question" folks again.

"Let me clarify my ask..."

"My next ask is..."

"This is a (name of person) ask..."

I don't think I've ever heard it before 2012, but have heard it several times since then, despite working at two different companies.

I was just thinking that I should start using this, but say "axe" instead.

Yes. And it's not just one person -- it's been multiple people, across two different companies. It seems like it's becoming pretty common corporate speak -- at least, it's common among people I'm in meetings with.

Well then, that deserves a big...WTF??

I'd say, the next time someone says that to you, you reply with, "I have no idea what you're talking about. Are you having a stroke?"

It must be fun at ILM

I just have this image in my head of some guy walking around going "I have no idea what you're talking about. Are you having a stroke?" every time someone says something grammatically incorrect. Like an NPC who continually tells you about how he took an arrow in the knee.

I see ask as a noun all the time at work. Isn't that typical meeting wrap up vocab?

Rather than "I need to know what you are asking me to do" it's "I need an ask". I honestly don't recall using it, but I've seen it enough that it doesn't jump out to me.

Never heard it- maybe it's regional. We tend to say "action item" or some other business-ese nonsense for something like that

I'm blaming Jim Rome, who introduced "take" as a noun. Plus, he's an annoying, weasel-looking guy, who's only contribution to society was starring in a YouTube clip that never fails to make me laugh.

It is gaining ground, confirmed.

It started out as somewhat separable from "question" and was much closer to "request" or "demand" and understood that way. "What's the ask?" was, to me, a reasonable way to say "exactly what do I need to do?" and made the most sense when speaking about money.

But its use has spread, making many people who don't know how to employ it to still do so in the pursuit of looking powerful or smart. It sucks, though not as much as "axe," which is loaded with additional complexities.

Haha! Oh, if you could be a fly on the wall during some of our meetings. The degree of "wtfness" usually depends on who we are having a meeting with.

Though I would give some serious props to anyone that started to tell us about the arrow they took to their knee.

She probably uses the 9-keypad. Zeroes take only one key press, where the letter o requires three.

Might've been mentioned before but it grinds my gears a bit when people use "begs the question" instead of "raises the question." "Begs the question" already has a meaning, but people are commandeering it for their own use incorrectly.

Hmm, it seems to me "begs the question" is just a more expressive and urgent form of "raises the question". It is being used correctly, just with different emphasis.

We have cable for the first time in years, and a very nice TV to watch the HD programming on. My pet peeve is someone watching a show in SD, when there is a perfectly good HD channel that we are paying for to watch it on.

First world problems. Heh.

We live on a corner lot and the community mailboxes are on the wall that runs down the side of our house. for some reason douchebags think this area is an ashtray as I pick up 10+ butts every week near the mailboxes.

Drives me nuts, I just want to catch someone doing it, follow them home and dump my trash can in their front yard.

Two things that really irk me:

- I can accept that you have made the incredibly stupid decision to smoke cigarettes. But every time I see you flick your ashes out the window, it makes me wish for a world where it's perfectly acceptable for me to run up, grab your cig and put it out on the back of your hand. Learn to use a frakkin' ash tray, jackass.

- It really bothers me when I go to buy coffee and see that all the sweetener packets are waterlogged. How long have they been sitting there absorbing moisture from the air?

This may have been covered in this thread already but...

People that take up their space in the middle of counter, and need 10 minutes to "fix" their coffee. Unless this is the first time you are ever drinking coffee, you have a relative idea of how much creamer/milk and how many sugars/sweeteners you like in your coffee.

None of this add sugar....and creamer....sip....too hot...dump some out...lid on...sip...lid off....add creamer...stir...sip...add sugar...lid on...sip...lid off...add more creamer...dump more out...stir...lid on...

I don't mind it at the time, what is 5 seconds. But then when it's over, I start to wonder their names. Like I should know them for holding the door open for them. I then think I'm odd wondering their names and that opens up more weird thoughts that prevent any measurable amount of frustration.

Not exactly a pet peeve, but something that angered me yesterday and this thread seems as good as any.

Was at a bachelor party and were leaving from disc golfing to go to someones house where we were going to grill out. We were told before leaving that each group of people driving together were going to pick something up for dinner and we were supposed to get buns for burgers and brats and beverages. After grabbing what we think is enough of both for everyone we get to the house and after the people who had been grilling were done we look around and there isn't any food there for us so we ask if there's still stuff on the grill and are told, "Oh, you guys probably didn't hear. We changed the plans so that everyone just bought stuff for themselves."

I don't know, but that seems like the kind of thing you kind of want to make sure that everyone knows about if you're going to change plans like that.

Well some people have to hold the door open for another 5 seconds for a few more people, think about that.

Okay, say you're on a message board. Someone makes a reference, an acronym, or something you don't understand.

So you post your query to the message board and ask for help. And then you sit and wait. Really?

I always feel bad when people hold the door for me, especially when I'm more than a few steps behind them. I feel compelled to hurry up, but I can't run or jog, and right now, anything more than a fairly slow walk is painful. I almost wish they would just not bother holding the door. But I do thank them when they do.
