Then we proceeded to drop 100 on a team, including 63 in the first half, which is the most we scored in a single half since 1997

Sorry about that. Frankly, I'm still getting used to this whole "basketball power" business again. After two decades of mostly screwing around and occasionally losing games like this, it's a very different look to see State just outclassing opponents whenever they get into a groove. From the small sample so far, the biggest challenge I think will be motivation against a lesser opponent who may struggle for periods in a game, but won't fold. There's still a bit of "we got this" cockiness that will likely lead to a loss a few times this year because they get sloppy and careless when they think the game's been won. There's more than a few ACC teams that will punish them for that (see Duke in Cameron last year). |

77-58 UNLV final over Jacksonville State. We were awfully sloppy with our ballhandling in the first half, or our 32-14 halftime lead would have been even bigger.
Then our defense got a little lazy in the second half and they got to within 11 at one point before we surged back. All in all, an okay win. Mike Moser was his usual fantastic self - 19 points, 10 rebounds, a block on 6/12 shooting (5 turnovers though). Anthony Bennett had a very quiet first half - like 3 points and 4 rebounds, I believe. Then he woke in the second and finished with 12 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 blocks in just 22 minutes. Justin Hawkins really carried us in the first half with 12 points and an electrifying steal. He ended up with 16 points and 2 steals. We absolutely crushed them on the glass - 40 rebounds to 19, which is awesome especially since it isn't something I'm used to seeing from UNLV. Our 3 point shot was dead tonight - just 3 of 19 - but it didn't need to be good to win this game. So yeah, some things to work on definitely, but this is easily the best team we've had since I've been here, I think.

Not good but still a decent win for us given the conference they play in. Todays game is huge for us and our best chance for a signature OOC win given the rest of the schedule. We missed out last year because we didn't have a big win the committee could look at. |

For those wondering what "NC State shit" looks like, please refer to this weekend's events in Clemson and down in Puerto Rico.
Clemson was somewhat understandable if a bit absurd in how it occurred, but losing to Oklahoma State in Puerto Rico in spectacularly awful fashion pretty much defines the whole experience, right down to CJ Leslie getting the double personal-technical foul combo that puts him out of the game, combined with awful and disinterested play from everyone else, combined with an opponent who didn't give a damn about State's lofty rankings. Throw in a dash of hot shooting and you get a 20-point blowout of a top-six team. Well, that should cure the expectations problem. The guys now know what it's like to face someone who views them as an opportunity and they came up wanting. Time to see what they learn from this. They'd better learn, anyway. This fanbase will turn on them really fast if they don't (sad, but true). |

Jack Taylor from Grinnell College in Iowa scores 138 points.
He went 52/101 from the field. 27/71 from 3 pt range. 7/10 from the FT line. Grinnell beat Faith Baptist 179-104. |

Clarke represented in the final, but otherwise they looked like they were worn out for the game against the Illini. Very good run for them, picking up scalps from Marquette and UNC has to equal a successful road trip. Thrilled with how Illini looked in the tournament. Not the toughest of roads, considering the bracket, but 3 double-digit wins and never (?) trailing in Maui is a lot better than any sane Illinois fan would have expected heading into the road trip. Especially after having to come from behind to beat Hawaii right before the start of the tournament. |

Ugh. 82-80 win over UNC-Asheville. As I'm out of town, I was only able to follow as a game thread and that was a brutal read. Basically, Richard Howell dragged us to a win in this game by scoring 20+, getting 15 boards, and sinking the clinching free throws at the end.
Otherwise, it was a dismal effort. Lo Brown seems to really be out of sorts, especially, and CJ Leslie isn't playing like he did at the end of last year, though some of that seems to be ascribed to being unable to get the ball when it needs to get to him and he ends up either not getting it at all or getting it in a poor position to score from. Not promising with the Big 10 game at Michigan looming and the Wolverines having played like they actually were supposed to be ranked #4, as opposed to State, which so far has looked horribly overrated and much more like the State team that floundered for most of last year before catching fire over the final month to get all the way to the Sweet 16. |

Iowa lost a tough one to Wichita St. in Cancun. We are young and it showed. WSU has a lot of upper classmen and they played better. We struggled shooting in the 2nd half. missed a lot of easy shots.
Our 2 Freshmen got into foul trouble and that hurt. We need experience and this Cancun tourney was real good for that. |

Tonight showed just how badly we need our SG's back on the team. That game goes much differently if Pressey has Dixon and Brown with him. Especially without Dixon, Pressey is trying to take on Siva and Smith all by himself. That's way too much too handle. Will be so glad when we have our full roster on the floor. Depressing loss to Oregon. Would have won if Hawkins made the last 3 point shot, but sloppy ballhandling and a cold shooting streak in the first half doomed us to a 79-83 defeat to the Ducks.

Maybe.. although we have to stop turning the damn ball over against teams as good as Louisville is.. I don't care who's in the game for us, we play like this against a top 25 team, we will continue to get smoked. Oh, and how about getting Bowers the ball? Bo's stubbornness gets the best of him tonight. Some games it seems like he just doesn't do what's right. When we were up two we had a lineup of all passive players..no one wanted the ball and we let a huge opportunity go by without dekker or berggren in to create something. And sooner or later bo needs to bring bruiser off the bench and start dekker. Creighton will be a very good team and should get a top 4 seed come tourney time.

That run where Louisville scored like 9 points in 30 seconds reminded me of some of Pitinos really good UK teams.
