We just finished watching the Muppets movies over the past couple of weeks and they break into three very distinct tiers:

Muppets (2011) > The Muppets Movie (1979) > Muppets Take Manhattan (1984) >>
Muppets from Space (1999) > Muppets Most Wanted (2014) > Great Muppet Caper (1981) >>
Muppet Treasure Island (1996) > Muppet Christmas Carol (1992)

Muppets Treasure Island is definitely Top Tier for me.

ETA: I'll add that Muppet Christmas Carol is 1st for 2nd

I don't want to rate the movie here, but I want to say that it has some great cinematography for a comedy.

Watched about half this overnight a week or so ago. Jonathan Winters and the service station is just pure gold.

I think my issue with those - it's not that they're bad but that they're pretty faithful adaptations of the originals so they don't give the Muppet characters much room to breathe. And, at their essence, the Muppets have always felt about heart and character to me. So having to slavishly hold to Bob Cratchet or Captain Smollett needlessly restrains Kermit, for instance. You can get a little Kermit-esque spin, but not as much as if he's unrestrained.

My 11 year old son loves the song Footloose. I turned the TV on and the movie had just started. I told him it was on and he was shook because he didn't even know it was an actual movie.

I am also surprised Sara Jessica Parker is in it. Haven't seen it in forever.

The Many Saints of Newark - 7/10

Good but not great. All it really does is make you want a tv show during the same time with the same characters.

The end was fantastic.

I like the plot and action was decent. However, it didn't really follow the other movies with lots and unique ways of killing with the taunting.

If it was me, I would have stayed in the house.

If they had plopped this as an actual episode in Season 6 or something, I think people would have loved it. That's what it really was - a super-sized TV episode rather than self-contained movie.

I just loved being back in that world. I was so sad when it was over. Even considering the HBO Max concurrent release, it tanked at the box office, so I'm not sure we'll see another one, or another expanded universe kind of thing. David Chase did sign some kind of first-look deal with HBO, but, he's really old, I'm not holding my breath at this point.

The Sopranos was always a show that gave you a sense that a ton happened before you started watching, and a ton is happening off-screen, and a ton will happen when the show is over. It doesn't care that you're watching it, as much as other TV shows. The movie had that same feel.

Black Widow - 8/10

Pretty good movie, one to get for my BR collection this Black Friday. The action scenes were great, special effects up there, enjoyed sisterly banter, liked the dad but didn't like the mom (seemed off) etc.

The ending-ending means sis is going to be back and looking forward to that.

Overall, typical MCU movie but would put it in top half of other MCU movies.

How can you not like this movie? It's just so grand, and paced well. I know nothing of the book, so coming into this clean I didn't have any sort of expectations. It's well worth the time. I'd like to see it on the big screen. The set, images and scenes are so huge, it would be a real treat. The music is the final piece of the puzzle. It's just adds a full dimension to the movie. I can't wait for the next part. I liked the pacing. Some might think it's slow...but it has a steady build and it feels like every scene has important parts that need explored. Great stuff.

I know I am taking a contrarian opinion on this one given its Rotten Tomatoes score.

I was looking forward to this one. I haven't read any of the books but like Star Wars. This is not Star Wars.

Positives:
-One of the most visually stunning movie I've ever watched. This movie is absolutely beautiful.

Negatives (for me anyways):
-Pacing is very slow.
-I thought the movie was convoluted and difficult to follow. I like the more straight forward plots of the Star Wars and MCU movies.
-At the end of the movie I didn't care about any of the main characters. I feel like despite its slow past there wasn't proper character development.

I haven't read the books but I have seen the 1984 David Lynch movie several times, mostly to make fun of it. I know several people who loved the book series, and was excited about a possible better treatment to the story. Sadly I only made it through an hour and half before I quit watching. The story was predictable, and the characters were uninteresting. I wanted to like it, but just didn't.
edit: why is it in the future they can't afford lights? Why was everything shot in interiors so dark?

I fell somewhere in the middle. New to the series. It was a beautiful movie, even on my TV at home. But a little slow. And the total lack of humor was a minus. I like a little Star Wars-like humor sprinkled in. I'd give it a 6 or so. Will see the next one.

There it is. That was the biggest thing missing. Not like a cartoonish, Jar Jar Binks kind of humor, but just the way people find humor even in the darkest times.

The Father 8/10 (Starz)

Anthony Hopkins plays a father who is losing control of his senses. He is fighting help from his family, and he struggles to make sense of his world at times.

I have to say, that this portrayal of dementia is probably the most realistic in terms of storytelling and getting you to empathize with the main character. His acting is top notch, as usual, but here, he's playing every scene and carries such gravity with his performance that you have a hard time looking away. The final scene is one of the most powerful of the year.

I'm an only child. My parents needs will fall on me as they age. And as for myself...the idea of aging and watching your world fall away from you is not how any of us want to age.

No Time to Die - 8/10

A solid Bond movie. A worthy ending for Bond, James Bond. Son and I both agreed it was time, Daniel Craig was looking a little too boomerish.

Not sure I like the new 007 but I'm sure I'll watch her. She had some nice fight scenes (or at least her stunt double did).

While it's not one of my top five favorite MCU movies ever, I thought this movie was solid. I thought it was better then other MCU movies in character development for the main antagonist of the movie. In addition, Awkwafina was particularly funny in her role. I also really liked the post credit scenes even more then most other MCU movies.

King Richard - 8.5/10
Will Smith was tremendous in this movie. I really liked this film.

Jungle Cruise - 6/10
I thought this was a nice slightly above average film. I enjoyed both the Rock's and Emily Blunt's characters but wasn't a big fan of some of the more fantasy elements of the movie.

I know the Rock will never win an Oscar but I enjoy watching his movies. He's like Tom Cruise, reliably entertaining (btw when is that frakking Top Gun 2 coming out?).

I know it has been primarily drama and comedy, but would like him to do a romance and see how that works out

KING RICHARD (2021) 8/10
First Will Smith movie I've enjoyed in far too long. Great tennis sequences. Feel good movie.

BELFAST (2021) 6.5/10
Visually beautiful, black and white homage coming of age story from Kenneth Branagh. I don't imagine returning to this one, but I do appreciate it more as I think about it.

tick...tick...BOOM! (2021) 5/10
I knew going in, this movie wasn't for me. I'm just not a musical guy. That said, some of the songs worked, most didn't. I love Andrew Garfield. He takes on challenging, unusual roles.

PANIC IN NEEDLE PARK (1971) 7/10
NEEDLES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GOODFELLAS (1990) 10/10
Lois is the fucking worst

THE HARDER THEY FALL (2021) 5/10
Stylish, little depth. Lots of good actors. Not for me.

ONLY LOVERS LEFT ALIVE (2013) 8.5/10
Not usually a Jarmusch fan, but this was my first viewing of OLLA. Gotta say, fuckin' loved it. Loved how regular they were. I'll see this one again.

DICK JOHNSON IS DEAD (2020) 8/10
Documentary tricks you. You think the premise is this director having fun by killing her dad in all sorts of different ways. But really, it's a movie about alzheimer's. And it's crushing.

We pretty much always have Prime for shipping. But, otherwise, we subscribe to one for a month or two then drop it, pick up another, etc. We'll be doing HBO Max at some point in the next month for Matrix Resurrection so we'll actually be doubled up for a little bit

Pig - 7/10

(Picked it free on Hulu while Prime was still charging for it)

Overall, a pretty decent movie. Nicolas Cage is so hot and cold, and this is one of his better performances. I told my wife it was strangely interesting.

The biggest ding is not washing up. It is beyond belief he wouldn't have washed up so docked it .5 pts for that.

Although the plot is fairly predictable, it's a fun movie. It is a nice blend of action and romantic comedy. The movie reminds me a lot of the Truman Show, another great movie.

Shang Chi - 7.5/10

Lots of nice moves and special effects. Some tie-in with MCU.

Ding against one of the MCU characters, it seemed forced and no idea why needed. Also ding against some of the wire-fu. I know by definition wire-fu ain't real but there were some scenes where the wire-fu didn't look "realistically unrealistic".

Love Awkwafina, she was a great foil to Simu.

The Last Duel - 6.5/10

Matt Damon, Adam Driver, Ben Affleck movie directed by Ridley Scott. Seems right up my alley. I am glad I watched it because it was interesting historically. However, not one that I would buy for my library to repeat watch.

Googled on it and it's pretty accurate on how the story unfolds. There are some liberties taken (especially in the fight scenes) but compared to other movies "based on true events" this one is pretty good.

Slow, plodding in most of the story but fascinating view of medieval times.

PANIC IN NEEDLE PARK (1971) 7/10
NEEDLES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GOODFELLAS (1990) 10/10
Lois is the fucking worst

THE HARDER THEY FALL (2021) 5/10
Stylish, little depth. Lots of good actors. Not for me.

ONLY LOVERS LEFT ALIVE (2013) 8.5/10
Not usually a Jarmusch fan, but this was my first viewing of OLLA. Gotta say, fuckin' loved it. Loved how regular they were. I'll see this one again.

DICK JOHNSON IS DEAD (2020) 8/10
Documentary tricks you. You think the premise is this director having fun by killing her dad in all sorts of different ways. But really, it's a movie about alzheimer's. And it's crushing.

LOVE HARD (2021)
WHAT IN PLUPERFECT HELL DID I JUST WATCH

I look forward to every post you make in this thread. I'm very impressed with your knowledge. Keep up the great reviews.

Cry Macho - 5/10

Not one of Clint's finest. Somewhat interesting but for the most part, boring. I didn't have high hopes but know we won't have Clint acting much longer so wanted to check it out. He is looking ... old.

This part doesn't work for him at this stage of his career. I can see him as some crochety grandfather in a comedy vs an old tough dude.

Don't Look Up- 8/10

Caught this in its very brief theatrical window after a nice boozy brunch, I think it's on Netflix now, or soon. If you like Adam McKay movies, this is most definitely an Adam McKay movie. It feels a bit like a commentary on COVID, but it's really about climate change and the absurdity of our ignorance and inaction regarding our inevitable demise. But funny. Highly recommended if you liked movies like the Big Short and Vice.

Watching Don't Look Up right now and I agree. Whether Covid or climate change, it is hitting it on the nose.

Don't miss the after-credits scenes.

I saw The King's Man this afternoon. It was a bit crap. Lots of short, over the top action scenes and a story that jumped all over the place.

3/10.
