According to Letterboxd, I watched 58 new releases from the year 2021. Licorice Pizza happened to be #58, as I saw it on December 30th. Of those 58 movies, it was my favorite.

I will also jump in and say I liked the movie too. Not something I'd run out to the theaters for but a fun movie to watch at home. I like Ryan Reynolds style humor.

We struggle sometimes to find good movies for a family movie night that includes 10 and 13-year-old boys and aren't part of the Marvel/Disney behemoth. So, to that end, Free Guy was a good choice.

But you know what also was a good choice (this was last weekend)? The original Blues Brothers. Good pacing, great music, and even funnier than I remembered. Had the kids doubled over with laughter. I think it helps that there's a lot of swearing, which boys of that age love, but there are also plenty of really silly set pieces, like knocking the Illinois Nazis off of the bridge, Carrie Fisher blowing up buildings, etc....

I got No Time to Die on PPV and it wasn't particularly good. I enjoyed the Craig Bond movies as a whole but this was one of the weaker ones, for sure.

I'd put Skyfall and Casino Royale(other than the poker stuff) in the upper tier and I have the new one slightly behind Spectre and way above Quantum of Solace. Quantum of Solace was horse manure.

Cleopatra (1963) - 3/10

Long and boring. At one point the most expensive movie every made. I can see why. There were a lot of massive, elaborate sets that were used for just one scene. The movie was mostly just Cleopatra and Caesar, and then Cleopatra and Marc Anthony, sitting around and talking. Insanely boring movie that took me a full week to work through. I give it a few stars for the sets, costumes and cinematography, but that's all.

And I absolutely hated Rex Harrison as Julius Caesar. Not saying he did a bad job specifically, just that I don't see him as Julius Caesar. Not even close. His look, his voice, his mannerisms...just all wrong. Maybe Ciarán Hinds crushing it in HBO's Rome ruined anyone else being Caesar for me.

The first two hours of the movie was very boring. Additionally, there were to many characters for me to care much about anyone. The last 40 minutes of the movie wasn't to bad at least. The post credits indicated the Eternals will return but I would be fine if we never see them in the MCU again. This is a rare bad movie for the MCU.

My sons and I tried to watch this last night. We watched the first 40 minutes and could not believe how boring it was, and had the same thoughts around too many characters and not caring about any of them. When we realised there were still 2 hours left we turned it off and have no plans to return. What a stinker.

I actually liked the Eternals better than I expected (I'd probably give it like a solid 6/10), but I get why people didn't love it. They tried to introduce way too many characters at once and, in my opinion, did a pretty bad job of establishing a big, bad villain (he and his motives were there, but not enough work done to make anyone care about him). I think they could have pulled it off with six or seven characters, but ten was way too many.

I think there were enough good performances to make it worth seeing. I thought the Kingo storyline was interesting enough (and I liked how he sort of hedged and didn't come back to help) and thought Phastos and the Thena/Gilgamesh characters were interesting. And having someone openly gay, a deaf person, and the equivalent to a mental illness (with Thena) were at least notable. They sort of focused on Sersei, Ikaris, and Sprite - and those three would be among the ones I would consider cutting (although you kind of need Ikaris, I guess).

I think the writers fell in love with the source material and didn't spend enough time thinking like a viewer, so they didn't realize how confusing ten new heroes with all new powers and a new villain would be and how little time they would have to flesh them all out.

Dune - 5/10

Got it at Redbox for $2 (vs $20 on Prime). Book is one of my favorites and watched the other 2 adaptations. Pretty big disappointment. Basically, boring. If this was a standalone movie, would not be part of my BR collection but know I'll have to watch part 2 and hope it gets better.

Grand sweeping landscapes, great special effects, like how outfits & people from House Atreides was so different than Harkonnen, and all that. But lacking in dialogue, redundant shots of the ornithopters (okay, they look cool but give it a break), and really no sandworm but just teasers.

Also, the lack of non-blade weapons is weird. I'll have to read the book again sometime. I get the personal body shields would stop bullets, but thought Sardaukars fought with guns. Regular Atreides also.

Not the 2000 movie, this was made in 2013 I believe. It's a unique sci-fi movie with one of the more fascinating concepts I can remember. First half was near perfect and while I liked part of the ending, there is one character in it that seemed completely unnecessary. Really good film if you like science stuff and can find it on a streaming service.

A Walk Among the Tombstones (6/10)

Ever look up a Rotten Tomatoes score after seeing a movie and think "this is a perfect match?". That's what I'd say about the 68% this movie got.

Huge Liam Neeson fan so I was a little disappointed in the lack of action. But it is a nice throwback to the old detective movies of the 80's and 90's. David Harbour is a great villian and while I wouldn't go out of my way to see it, it was enjoyable for what it was.

Worth noting that THE FRENCH DISPATCH was completely shut out and FREE GUY got a nomination. My word.

One of the worst movies I've ever seen. Hilariously heavy-handed with it's agenda, every character was cookie cutter.

Kristen Stewart showcase. Some great performances around the edges by the chef and Sally Hawkins as well. Love the cinematography. Fantasy scenes felt disjointed. First half felt like a bulimia biopic but turned around a bit in the back half. KS is one of the greats.

FRESH 5/10
Fun popcorn movie, obvious Dexter vibes. Fun B movie.

WEST SIDE STORY 5/10

Matrix Resurrection - 6/10 (but could go up after second viewing)

Finally came down to $6 on Prime and watched it last night. Reminded me of the other Matrix movies where I didn't quite understand it the first time. I'll have to watch it again tonight and think/hope it'll be better.

How do you screw up a Liam Neeson movie so bad? I can forgive the weird plot that made me not care about anyone in the movie. But the action was garbage too and the ending was rushed. Genuinely one of the worst movies I've seen in some time. And I am a sucker for stupid action/revenge movies.

The Foreigner - 8/10

This was surprisingly really good. It feels like 2 movies in one. You have this political thriller about the IRA which is solid. Then they just sort of mix in a Jackie Chant action/revenge flick inside it. That seems really weird, but it works.

Jackie Chan still kicks ass at his age and has some surprisingly great dramatic scenes. But the star of the movie is Pierce Brosnan who could have easily phoned this in and didn't. His character is essentially Gerry Adams.

This is precisely what I want out of an action/revenge movie.

Pretty darn good. Not sure I can believe Dr. Strange doing the "grey area" stuff or Spidey being able to find the "cure", but bringing the Spidey "others" was a masterstroke IMO. Greatly enjoyed seeing them again and their banter.

Not sure I like how the ending played out but can live with it.

Have to buy the Blu-Ray this BF so I can watch the specials.

We just watched this Thursday or Friday night, too. The premise is really weak - Dr. Strange is like "yeah, we'll do this crazy stupid thing because I like you kid", which feels horribly out of character on 3 different levels (playing with magic for a frivolous purpose, using really powerful magic he doesn't really understand for said frivolous purpose, and doing it out of sentiment to Peter). A bunch of the secondary characters feel out of character, like weird caricatures of themselves. You take a lot of characters and put them in a different setting and it's hard to make that fit right but another MCU movie, Infinity War, did a pretty good job of that while this did a... less good job. In short, it sells out a lot of plot and character consistency, even grading for superhero movie standards, for good moments.

But a number of those moments are pretty awesome and the total package is quite enjoyable. An 8 feels about right - it's big and ambitious and should get points for that even if it can't quite nail all the landings on the big elements.

We just re-watched all 8 Spider-Man movies over the past month. It's not better than Spider-Man 2 but I'm ok slotting this in somewhere in the 2nd or 3rd spot of best Spider-Man movie, especially considering the attempted scope.

It tries hard to tie up and make up for some of the sins of the previous movies but that means there's just so many battling priorities so you just can't make it consistent. Like Foxx feels horribly out of character and his character in ASM wasn't that good to begin with. Molina does his best but Doc Ock's script is iffy. Sandman starts out on Spider-Man's side but then joins Electro... for no good reason. Dafoe's Goblin actually feels pretty good. That said, I absolutely love the idea of a multiverse Sinister Six

A SEPARATION (2011) - 10/10
This movie won best Intl Feature at the Oscars in '11 and I am sorry that I missed it. Spectacularly humanizing. The plot unfolds in a circular manner that pulls everybody involved (viewers included) deeper and deeper into an ever-growing set of problems, accusations, and lies. At its core, it's a movie with people talking in rooms, and not a single second isn't captivating.

THIEF (1981) - 7/10

TRUST NO ONE: THE HUNT FOR THE CRYPTO KING (2022) - 4/10
The problem with these documentaries is that they don't present any new information. It's all kind of added speculation.

MICHAEL CLAYTON (2007) - 10/10
Someone should teach an entire film class on the brilliance of Tom Wilkinson's opening monologue.
