Here's part of the reason. Here's a quote from Sen. Jim Inhofe:

"“I was actually on your side of this issue when I was chairing that committee and I first heard about this. I thought it must be true until I found out what it cost.”"

I bumped that thread back up with a great MBBF quote from it.

The western part of North America also had a very mild winter, the scenes from the iditarod sled dog race in Alaska where they at times were riding through tundra with no snow were quite telling.

I detest the global warming argument. It seems telling to me that folks on both sides will angrily froth and pound the table about what various hypothetical folks should be doing, yet personal responsibility rarely even enters the discussion.

I used to believe that a massive asteroid impact would hit the Earth, until I saw how much it would cost to try and divert it.

Also from the article:

Quote:
The U.S. Defense Department earlier this month in its once-every-four-years strategic review, called climate change a "threat multiplier" to go with poverty, political instability and social tensions worldwide. Warming will trigger new problems but also provide countries new opportunities for resources and shipping routes in places such as the melting Arctic, the Pentagon report says.

your article actually backs up what I said

Quote:
From Saskatchewan eastward — including Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec and most of the Maritime provinces — temperatures are expected to be colder than usual for this time of year. Temperatures in British Columbia and northern Canada are expected to be milder than normal, while Alberta is set to remain seasonal.

The western part of North America was above average temps all winter long. in the U.S, California had a bad drought and warmer temperatures than normal. For much of the winter, Alaska was warmer than most of the Southeastern USA. In Canada, British Columbia was also warmer than normal.

This stuff frustrates me, just like the people who claim Boston has the same climate DC did 30 years ago. If there's significant warming going on, you don't need to do this.

For grins, I compared Anchorage (a southern coastal Alaska city) to Atlanta (center of the southeast, and much colder than usual this year) for the past winter. I used high temperatures.

Which was warmer?
March: Atlanta 31, Anchorage 0
February: Atlanta 25, Anchorage 2, Tie 1
January: Atlanta 26, Anchorage 5
December: Atlanta 31, Anchorage 0

Total: Atlanta 113, Anchorage 7, Tie 1

It looks like Anchorage had a warm couple of weeks in mid-late January. Otherwise, a fairly normal Alaska winter. Using Fairbanks would make this even more extreme.

But, yes, the Pacific Northwest in general will stay warmer than you'd expect during the winter. By the time you get as far south as Seattle, you're down to six inches of snow per year on average - but when you move inland, especially into the mountains, you get a more familiar winter.

Here is one map of this winter's temperatures versus "normal" from a global aspect. As expected most of the East Coast was far colder than normal. Most of the west coast was warmer than normal.

Edit: this picture is pretty large. Spoilering it so it does not blow up people's browsers that don't care about it

I wasn't saying anything from a global warming aspect. It is one of those topics in public I generally avoid such as religion and politics since most people I find are very set in their ways on those topics. I merely have been posting in here regarding the posts about this winter was all as I have found this winter very fascinating from how different it was from other winters I have experienced.

You're right I was probably a little cavalier in my stating much of alaska was warmer than the Southeast U.S. Alaska did have a much warmer winter than normal though, but it is so large from a land mass scale that the temperature in the northern part of the state is quite different than the southern part.

Comparisons for Juneau could probably be made with the Southeast U.S though, but just from looking I found reports showing that Anchorage had a warmer January than Philadelphia and New York City. however once again, this was posted more just for the fun of how crazy a winter it has been than anything else.

That's really tough for people to get though. I know some otherwise very smart people who legitimately cannot grasp this fact.

Hey guess what - global warming makes ice melt which increases the amount of moisture in the atmospheric system, which affects the weather patterns in a lot of different ways.

I dunno why this is hard to grasp.

Alan suggested that western NA had a warmer winter but a warmer than normal January is not a warmer winter. While January was one of the warmest in a long time, February and March were among the coldest in a long time.

I find it interesting that other potential "world busting" issues like rapidly depleting natural resources and over-population aren't nearly as politicized, divisive or even talked about as global warming. What makes this issue so special?

We don't have threads for these issues or others like those.

That makes sense.

Plus, we can always cure overpopulation by carpet-bombing India (runs out of thread).

I think much of the resistance comes from corporations who don't want to have to change their ways - especially if those changes cost them money.

We don't have threads for these issues or others like those.

Couple other good points made in the thread already, but I also think it's such a massive polarization. For the vast majority of global warming studies/news/discussions, it's one of two things:

1 - Catastrophic global warming is happening, and we're all gonna die.
2 - It's all a lie.

There's no middle ground. If you don't accept 1, you are branded as believing 2, and vice versa.
