David Patten died in a motorcycle accident, he was the #2 receiver on the first 3 Patriots championship teams. He's the guy who always seemed to be in the right place for the big plays. He threw, ran, and caught a TD in a single game during the 2001 season. I remember another time when he caught a pass, fumbled, and it was ran back by the Bills for TD, but it came back on review because while he was laying half-out-of-bounds after the big hit, the ball happened to be touching his leg, which made it a dead ball. That's the second receiver on the '01 team to die in a vehicle accident after Terry Glenn a few years back.

That's sad. Patten always stood out amongst receivers to me because of how fast he looked on the field.

Texans trade Bradley Roby to Saints.

Gives the Saints a needed CB2 and confirms that the Texans are likely going full tank this season.

Thread title edited to reflect the return of the NFL. I just couldn't stand to start a new thread and lose all of our sweet Dan Campbell content.

Good luck to everyone's team this season. I feel like I should be excited for my beloved Cards chances this year, but their secondary really scares me, and is going to hold them back.

Anyone want to start an NFL survivor game thread?

As someone who watches the Cards close, what is your opinion on Kingbury? The national pundits I listen to seem down on him, but there's a lot of groupthink in that world. I'm wondering what the insider's view is.

The giraffe named after Joe Burrow dying due to illness feels oddly foreboding. Hopefully it wasn’t the Bengals offensive line who were responsible for making sure it got its meds on time.

Ask me again after the season. He hasn't been around long enough to see the effects of his coaching on the team. He likes younger players more than Arians did which I like. Murray is his baby, the reason they made him coach and gave him such weapons as Hopkins, so if they are not a playoff contender this season, I think you have to say the hiring didn't work and look to move on.

They could probably trade the giraffe to the Colts for a 2nd round pick.

If you're a fantasy player, Ty'Son Williams is a guy who got some love leading into the '20 draft here (from me, among others IIRC) and he's basically the guy currently slotted for maybe 1/3 of the work. If that means 120 carries for 600 yards and 5 TD (not unreasonable) and a shot at RB1 if something else goes wrong, that makes him fantasy-viable and he's basically free in most drafts/auctions right now.

It also stands to reason they'd bring someone in for the job, and that seems logical. Gus Edwards is not a capable receiver, and Williams hasn't shown that he's fully on top of pass protection and receiving either -- so if they add someone, it seems more likely they want a complementary piece for 3rd downs and/or satellite work more than just a between-the-tackles type. I continue to lobby for a low-stakes trade for Mark Ingram (fits the role, knows the system, and is great in the clubhouse) and I still think that's plenty viable with a crowded depth chart in Houston. He was not impressive last year, but he won't get your QB killed and could handle 30 receptions.

I thought Darwin Thompson (cut by KC) was an option, but I saw he got practice squadded elsewhere. Not sure I see Le'Veon Bell, Devonta Freeman, or Todd Gurley as good fits, but they will get their share of rumor mill.

Anyway...it's interesting, largely because this team WILL run the ball a lot and effectively, and there's someone out there who WILL get meaningful playing time and probably some 3rd down and/or goal line work. If I had a draft tonight, I'd toss a 12th round pick at Ty'Son Williams in hopes he'd be a valuable lottery ticket.

And now Edwards is out with a possible ACL.

Picked up Bell even though it was a moonshot. The Ravens have shown they will trust a no name running the ball multiple times but even the #2 in Baltimore has value. That team could be bad unless Lamar has an incredible year though.

Wasn't Gronk covered here? He can't be considered in the backfield I wouldn't think. I'm sure the Bucs would have score a TD anyway but the whole thing looked odd when he released.

We are all witnesses.

A lot of people are extra salty, grumpy witnesses. They probably have a good reason to be salty.

But still, we are all witnesses.

Tom Brady. That is all.

I like Brady. I watched him in my dorm room playing against Syracuse in 1998. (Donovan McNab beat him though).

That, but also that they are picking up Freeman, and now Murray too. I also thought about would I have picked up Gus Edwards if Dobbins was fit, and the answer was no - he would be the Ravens third choice RB behind Dobbins and Jackson.

So I thought if that was the case why try and pick up a player who has been poor since his hold out, will have high competition for essentially RB3, and i wouldn’t have picked up the player originally slated for that role anyway.

I think if you're making fantasy-type decisions for this season, the right approach right now is to figure the BAL RB to shape up as about 40% Ty'Son Williams, and 40% Latavius Murray, with any remaining share possibly going to a PTBNL. If you're scrounging the waiver wire and Murray is there, He (or Williams) is most likely the more worthy pursuit than Le'Veon Bell or Devonta Freeman.

The play looked like a mess, but I think he was clearly far enough off the line to be eligible.

Yeah with Murray being added Bell is worthless in fantasy. It was a long shot, might as well keep him around for a week or two to see if any more Baltimore RB have their legs fall off or something.

The guideline used to be that the helmet had to be behind the waist of the center. I'm guessing it was just missed - Gronk's feet look to be closer to the LOS than the LT.

So Lions fail to convert 4th & 1.
49ers hand the ball back via bungled snap on their first play.
Lions miss FG.

1. Goff just lacks accuracy. He’s making the right reads, but he’s leaving easy throws on the table.

2. I don’t know what Shanahan does that’s different than other playcallers, but the 49ers always just seem more open than other teams.

So the Lions defensive strategy is to hope that the opposing offense fumbles the snap? That's the only thing that has worked so far.

Jacksonville does not look good. Trevor's WR are not helping at all.

54 yards for the Steelers in the first half. oy.

And remember, you can always find LOL in Lions. (you just have to take the L twice, which Detroit is used to)

Unfortunately until the Jets can find people to protect the QB, they are going to struggle. And Jets being Jets, punter gets hurt, so kicker punting now.

You guys are definitely looking good. I am wondering how good the Titans really are. Titans fans have been talking about contending for the the SB this year for God sake. The Oline, Dline, WR, and DBs as well as coaching are looking suspect at present.
