Some of my favorite movies of all time are being mentioned in this thread, confirming my belief that nearly everyone on FOFC is certifiably nuts. Dr. Strangelove, Shawshank, Godfather, Godfather 2, Cuckoo's Nest (obviously), Groundhog Day, Fight Club, Bull Durham, Dark Knight, Eternal Sunshine, Pulp Fiction, Big Lebowski, Shakespeare in Love... Man, I love all of those.
For me, I'd say Jackie Brown, and I'll second Forest Gump. Just couldn't really get into either. Last edited by Cuckoo : 09-11-2008 at 03:56 PM. |

I will admit that I didn't love Big Lebowski the first time I saw it (and I'm a big Coen brothers fan as well). It's one of those, at least for me, that gets better and better on repeat viewings.

Speaking of good 1/2 movies...I thought the first half of Office Space was excellent and then it all kind of fell apart for me.

This is a problem with so many movies. You get a great first two acts and then realize that nobody knows how to end the movie so you get an illogical chase or a giant personality change and a flat ending. |

In my defense, it isn't the movie. I've never seen it. I should, I like baseball movies, but I have Susan Sarandon. I refuse to intentionally watch something with her in it. I've seen that scene with Kevin Costner getting her all wet talking about deep kisses and I want to vomit. Can't believe Robbins sleeps with that...

Heat. What a boring wankfest, and the beginning of the end (of good acting) for both De Niro and Pacino.

Caddyshack - A terribly unfunny movie that everyone else in the world seems to love. Bill Murray as a retarded groundkeeper battling a gopher puppet? Pass. Also starring Rodney Dangerfield and Chevy Chase, both of whom pretty much suck. Really never saw the appeal of this movie nor understood the fanatical devotion.
The Blues Brothers - Don't think I ever got all the way through this one. Just pathetic. I like the leads but they just didn't have much of a script. |

I will certainly second Caddyshack. That one has always blown my mind. I don't mind the Blues Brothers. Caddyshack is something I've never even made it all the way through on because it is so bad.

Instead of quoting everyone, I'm just going to respond where I feel I need to respond sans quoting...
Bite your tongues on Empire Records. You guys probably saw the theatrical version which has about 20 min edited out. The released version has a few minor plot holes, is too sugary and wraps up far too conveniently, but the directors cut, i.e. the intended story is much stronger--one of my favorites. Also, I don't think it's a chick flick in disguise...it's a blatent chick flick. But so were John Hughes' big three. The allure of Tarantino (and Kevin Smith for that matter) is a third party candidate type of allure. It's not for everyone, but those who identify tend to love very passionately. The greatest car chase scene is Bullet with Steve McQueen. Totally agree about The Big Lebowski...never understood the appeal. Same goes for Gone with the Wind. Anything with Keanu Reeves is an automatic no-watch. I've been boycotting since Dracula. Disney movies...no...no, all set. Caddyshack 2 is better than the first. Sames goes for Revenge of the Nerds 2. Gone with the Wind was pure suffering. I sat through it on a football Sunday when I first began dating my wife. First of all, it looks like it was filmed in front of high school theater sets. The acting was over the top and pathetic. Great movies are not supposed to drag. No Country for Old Men is vastly overrated too, as are the Coen brothers. You can literallly see this movie trying to be something it's not. If the Coen brothers are really true artists, they've probably lost all respect for the academy because they have to have known this movie was drivel. |

Caddyshack 2 is an awful movie, of course. It does, however, have some great moments, such as a few involving Randy Quaid (I love the flamethrower line). Caddyshack has nothing of the kind.

I haven't seen it in a long time, but saying that Caddyshack 2 is better than the first strikes me as saying that Highlander 2 is better than Highlander. That's crazy talk.

Armageddon (agree with Karlifornia)
There Will Be Blood (good acting by the main character, but slowly plodding boring story) Goonies (Wife loves it. I can't stand it.) Indiana Jones: Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (When computer rodents are you comedic relief and you have a scene where some becomes George of the Jungle, you basically ruined a pretty good franchise).

I just saw No Country For Old Men last night, and figured I'd look to see if there were any threads about it here. This one came up.
My thoughts? What a pile of horseshit. It had some promise, but it went absolutely nowhere. Also some pretty ridiculous leaps of logic that went on (how on earth does Woody Harrelson show up in the Mexican hospital room?!?).

FWIW, I don't think you're meant to like this one anymore than I am meant to like Beaches or Steel Magnolias. This movie was made for the mid-20s guy in the 90s. Particularly if you live in LA, or can relate to some of the stuff in there. Which means it was absolutely the most perfectly targeted movie of all tiem for me.

Not sure if Paul Blart Mall Cop fits the category, but having seen it for the only time in my life just a bit ago (I hope anyways) I can say it was average funny at best, and somewhat dumb and boring. I usually like dumb when it is expected, but this was dumb done wrong.
