One of the young men I coached in California tore his achilles last week, ending his season and most likely his football career.

He was an All-Great West Conference first team selection last season at defensive end.

This seems like an impossibly true statistic:

Jen Smith@jenheraldleader
Kentucky needs just three yards on a punt return Saturday to equal the number of punt return yards (35) it had all of last season.

What's considered average? Rutgers is a punt block team so most kicks are fair caught (MOST, not ALL...hear that Mason Robinson?). Last year we returned 16 punts for a total of 104 yards.

According to sports-reference.com they had 15 returns for 43 yards last year. Since fair catches don't count as returns, that is a ridiculously low average.

A quick look through the NCAA stats (in a .pdf, so they aren't sortable) looks as those something in the neighborhood of 200 yards was about median last year for D1.

Kentucky had only 35 yds on 19 returns, 2nd worst. Syracuse looks like third lowest, 37 yds on 12 returns. The kings of non-return were New Mexico, just 12 yards on 9 returns. Minnesota, Indiana, Ball State and San Jose St each had only 8 punt returns but got more yards out of them.

Haha. No I generally try to stay positive, but they negatoids on the rivals board plus the conference expansion stuff have really beaten it out of me.

UNLV is only down 28-20 to Wazzou at the half. Sherry looking pretty damn good that last drive for a FG.

Ugh if it wasn't for stupid fucking penalties, UNLV could be 2-0 right now with a strong shot at 3-0. Instead we'll probably be 0-3.

Yes, the entire nation is waiting on pins and needles to see if that happens. Maybe he can use his hit and run skills against the Sun Devlis.

Another close loss drops us to 0-3. We should be passing a hell of a lot more. Hauck keeps trying to get a running game going and play short yardage and that's not where our talent lies.

Frustrates me because it's wasting a pretty decent QB and a couple of WRs. But he's just too damned pigheaded and stupid. My only hope now is that he does get fired at the end of the year. Can't imagine much worse a coach.

The Big East is such a shit-pile, and only becoming worse, that it's hard to be excited while our chrome-helmeted monstrosities start 3-0.

I am truly bummed me and my buddies aren't on the road right now to head to Oxford. Ole Miss will make a return trip to Austin next season, but I've already experienced innumerable times the tailgating on the Forty Acres. Not sure when the next time we'll get to experience an Ole Miss-Longhorns Game Day at The Grove.

There are at least SIX potential outright upset doggies today over Big 10 teams who are all AT HOME.

In fact, the only 100% sure thing today in that conference is Michigan over st.jude MASS.

Yeah, but you never know if they will be in let down mode after the close ND loss last week.

Still, if theyre not -3 in TOs they will win by DDs. Not sure about the 24

Pitt is whipping Va Tech early on. It is 21-0 in the 2nd quarter.

Devin Smith of Ohio State is scary-good receiver, and Urban Meyer definitely has the Buckeyes humming again.

Pitt is up on the Hokies 21-0 early. Who had that one?

Maybe the same folks who figured FSU up 38-0 on Wake at the half?

VPI looked like a one man show offensively against GT, he's 138 of their 164 total offense today. If that show throws three picks, they're gonna have problems.

I´m not sure if even half a dozen snaps were reasonably on target for Cal. Seriously, their QB might have back trouble after this game considering how often he has to reach low to catch the snaps ...

amazing run by Bigelow of Cal, basically down before making 2 impromptu spin moves off balance and then streaking down the sideline for the TD.

LINCOLN, Neb. -- Nebraska coach Bo Pelini left Saturday's game against Arkansas State by ambulance after falling ill on the sideline in the first half.

A member of the Nebraska medical staff was seen checking Pelini's pulse in the first half, but he continued on the sideline until halftime. Pelini didn't come out with the team for the third quarter.

The Cornhuskers led Arkansas State 28-3 at half.

These are my two least favorite teams, so this is win-win for me.

Either VPI loses to a team that lost by double digits to Youngstown State or Pitt takes another gut punch loss.

cool play by Cal having the 2 brothers do a double lateral (or however you call that), just not executed quite well enough by the blockers (and then Maynard of course got lucky that he lost it out of bounds)

Maynard then sneaks in, Cal up 21-20 !

Give Cal some credit, they're playing the Buckeyes tough and the refs aren't making it any easier on them. Be interesting to see how Meyer gets these guys back into control here.

Bigelow with another long TD run, that´s 3 runs, 2 TDs, 156 yards

in between Braxton Miller with a great drive, mainly running the ball very efficiently and then doing a nice shuffle pass for the TD.

Alas, Tennessee Tech's lead over Oregon was shortlived (about 5 plays), now 7-7.

And yes, there was a Da'rick Rogers sighting on the first TD.

And the Cal kicker misses his 3rd FG, all wide left (and the 1st and 3rd weren´t even close). On 4th and 1 with the way the offense was going, that´s veeeery conservative play calling ...

And again (although this time not the coach). If you bring the guy of the 2 long TD runs in and then not let him return a kinda returnable kick ?

Cal gets lucky with a Pass Interference on a pass that never had any chance to get completed (wobbly ball and triple coverage)

Interception, ball game.

Maynard rushed that expecting pressure, only the guy rushing him fell down and he would have had all kinds of time.

Theoretically it had a chance to be there, it wasn't off, but ya, he got bailed out because he probably wasn't going to make that catch.
