I think "black" refers to the fact that they were dead in this situation.

From the link DC posted. Looked like a real-time timeline of things as they happened. But hopefully this part of it, anyway, turns out not to be true (or at least, any implications of it being racially motivated).

Yikes, I hope this doesn't turn into a racial thing. I don't know if that's a function of where the theater was/who frequents it, or the reason he chose the theater or victims.

I did hear a witness interview where the guy talked about how he thought the theater was unsafe and didn't like going there. But he didn't explain why.

I'm far from a crime scene investigator, but I imagine it would be impossible to target people of a certain color in that chaos.

Ah, that makes sense. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Have to add one to the list:

Canadian = black
Black = dead

Aurora is nearly half minorities (14% black, 28% hispanic) but the borders of these places are so blurred that the reality is, Aurora is not exactly considered amongst the more sterling of the outskirt cities that make up the Denver Metro area. Sooo...if you were hunting for minorities, it's amongst the places you'd go to do it and have more success than other parts of the area (and in contrast to say, a part of the city where you'd likely encounter people fighting back.)

That said, this theatre is off of I-225 so it'll attract folks from all over that part of Denver.

Hard to say whether he went to this theatre because he thought it was an easier target to pull off what he did (possibly) or if it was some kind of premeditated vendetta to target particular kinds of people. Because it seems more likely that it was just lax security or the fact that they'd specifically scoped this place out that might have induced its selection over something more sinister like specifically targeting as many of a particular group as he could get.

Though as it's been mentioned, one of the people killed was an aspiring (White female) sports journalist who'd recently moved to Denver (read about it on Twitter and that's the twitter feed I was mentioned earlier about someone killed) and people like Scott Van Pelt replied to the dude who initially mentioned her and posted her Twitter handle for everyone.

I guess we'll find out.

This, as well as the fact the he will be scrutinized, analyzed and any findings will get sensationalized to the point that once again, the victims take a back seat.

Well, limiting civilian's abilities to get automatic (semi-automatic?) weapons, bullet-proof armor, and tear gas would be a step in the right direction. The body count would likely be much lower if he hadn't had access to that stuff.

I'm always amazed at the relatively few number of casualties. Id suspect the over/under to be 50 if presented the scenerio in a vacuum.

Crazy happens even with gun control. Don't really have a horse in this argument as I see valid points on both sides but again this is a crazy person and the knee jerk is always more security, more gun control, less video games. Like BYU said how about less Monday morning quarterbacking, less sensationalizing the killer, and more focus on the victims and god forbid move on to another story tomorrow to discourage other crazies from getting their chance to die in a blaze of "glory".

All I'm saying is, he walks in with a handgun, then there would likely be far fewer casualties.

I'm sure that was intended to cover tear gas and semiautomatic weapons.

Do you know why we have the right to bear arms? If not, I suggest you do a little research into why we have that right because the Bill of Rights is important and it becomes invaluable when you know the reason why we have them.

I wonder if in the chaos something got missed. Movie goers have been quoted as saying they thought it was part of the movie. A dude busting through an emergency exit door setting off alarms wouldn't be something I would relate to a movie.

I hope there were deleted posts to warrant the warnings. I have seen nothing but civil discussion of an issue that directly relates to this event.

Do I think it's appropriate to get into the ole gun debate right away in a thread of this nature? No, not really.

Would I move to stop others from having that discussion if they so choose? Heck no.

There are conflicting witness reports. I've seen one interview where two guys definitively said that one teargas canister came from the back of the theater, and the shooter threw one. Another witness has said Person A opened the door, then Person B (the shooter) came in. The investigators herded all the non-injured witnesses to a high school to interview them. I'm sure they'll get it sorted out eventually.

Let's keep this thread about the tragedy, the news about it and so forth folks. Keep your feelings to PMs or go dredge up an old "I hate BEL/SkyDick" thread if you need to.

This isn't the place. This isn't the time.

Actually, we're chatting with Ben in real time right now, and he's pretty un-emotional about this. Offering quite good analytical views on several aspects of the news, I might add.

Oh...no idea if it actually would work in that particular theater. I'm just saying that there seem to be so many conflicting reports that it's impossible for us to know the truth on that point yet.

In a dark room things can seem to come from many different directions. Most likely he was in the theater, went to the exit door and propped it open with something. Threw on his gear reentered the room tossed the tear gas to create panic and started shooting in said panic.

I couldn't imagine being in that theater and there be guns blazing on screen and someone walks in guns blazing in real life. Absolutely terrifying.
