24 hour news channels. I believe in just crazy, but by the end of the day we're going to discover dude played MW3 on his XBox, and that shit'll be on like Donkey Kong. Because of course everybody with MW3 is a killer. |

I think "black" refers to the fact that they were dead in this situation.

From the link DC posted. Looked like a real-time timeline of things as they happened. But hopefully this part of it, anyway, turns out not to be true (or at least, any implications of it being racially motivated).

Aurora is nearly half minorities (14% black, 28% hispanic) but the borders of these places are so blurred that the reality is, Aurora is not exactly considered amongst the more sterling of the outskirt cities that make up the Denver Metro area. Sooo...if you were hunting for minorities, it's amongst the places you'd go to do it and have more success than other parts of the area (and in contrast to say, a part of the city where you'd likely encounter people fighting back.)
That said, this theatre is off of I-225 so it'll attract folks from all over that part of Denver. Hard to say whether he went to this theatre because he thought it was an easier target to pull off what he did (possibly) or if it was some kind of premeditated vendetta to target particular kinds of people. Because it seems more likely that it was just lax security or the fact that they'd specifically scoped this place out that might have induced its selection over something more sinister like specifically targeting as many of a particular group as he could get. Though as it's been mentioned, one of the people killed was an aspiring (White female) sports journalist who'd recently moved to Denver (read about it on Twitter and that's the twitter feed I was mentioned earlier about someone killed) and people like Scott Van Pelt replied to the dude who initially mentioned her and posted her Twitter handle for everyone. I guess we'll find out. Last edited by Young Drachma : 07-20-2012 at 08:47 AM. |

Imagine if it were an Islamic terrorist. American's would probably avoid movies for the next 3 months, we would bomb 2-3 countries, the TSA would have posts at every movie theatre and shopping mall, every future movie would start with a 10 minute TSA/Homeland Security video. White guy? Ah, just America what can you do? Not saying either extreme is really the appropriate response but like many have said already in this thread the dude was crazy and you just hope most people don't aspire to kill a bunch of innocent people and basically end their lives as well. Not really any way to stop it though but I fear a copycat or two and hope the media doesn't encourage more. |

Well, limiting civilian's abilities to get automatic (semi-automatic?) weapons, bullet-proof armor, and tear gas would be a step in the right direction. The body count would likely be much lower if he hadn't had access to that stuff.

I'm always amazed at the relatively few number of casualties. Id suspect the over/under to be 50 if presented the scenerio in a vacuum.

Don't really have a horse in this argument as I see valid points on both sides but again this is a crazy person and the knee jerk is always more security, more gun control, less video games. Like BYU said how about less Monday morning quarterbacking, less sensationalizing the killer, and more focus on the victims and god forbid move on to another story tomorrow to discourage other crazies from getting their chance to die in a blaze of "glory". All I'm saying is, he walks in with a handgun, then there would likely be far fewer casualties.

A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.
I am not gun nut or card carrying member of the NRA, but I am against anyone trying to infringe on my right to carry a firearm.

Completely stunned. I am shocked at how many people are affected in some way by this. It seems here everyone knew someone who knew someone who was there.

I'm impressed that y'all managed to wait five hours before you started trying to use this tragedy to further your own political agendas.
Keep it up, and there will be suspensions. Many of you people just plain disgust me.

Do you know why we have the right to bear arms? If not, I suggest you do a little research into why we have that right because the Bill of Rights is important and it becomes invaluable when you know the reason why we have them.

Suspensions for expressing an opinion? Cmon Ben you're better then that. You can state your displeasure, and people would understand.

I wonder if in the chaos something got missed. Movie goers have been quoted as saying they thought it was part of the movie. A dude busting through an emergency exit door setting off alarms wouldn't be something I would relate to a movie.

I hope there were deleted posts to warrant the warnings. I have seen nothing but civil discussion of an issue that directly relates to this event.
Do I think it's appropriate to get into the ole gun debate right away in a thread of this nature? No, not really. Would I move to stop others from having that discussion if they so choose? Heck no.

Ben, I think this tragedy has some how hit you hard and you're making mod decisions based on emotions more than logic. Box me if you like, but I think you should maybe step away from the board instead of boxing people like you are.

There are conflicting witness reports. I've seen one interview where two guys definitively said that one teargas canister came from the back of the theater, and the shooter threw one. Another witness has said Person A opened the door, then Person B (the shooter) came in. The investigators herded all the non-injured witnesses to a high school to interview them. I'm sure they'll get it sorted out eventually.

Let's keep this thread about the tragedy, the news about it and so forth folks. Keep your feelings to PMs or go dredge up an old "I hate BEL/SkyDick" thread if you need to.

Oh...no idea if it actually would work in that particular theater. I'm just saying that there seem to be so many conflicting reports that it's impossible for us to know the truth on that point yet.

In a dark room things can seem to come from many different directions. Most likely he was in the theater, went to the exit door and propped it open with something. Threw on his gear reentered the room tossed the tear gas to create panic and started shooting in said panic.

I couldn't imagine being in that theater and there be guns blazing on screen and someone walks in guns blazing in real life. Absolutely terrifying.
