At last, three new abduction sites pop up, all are rated very difficult, so the one with the highest panic wins and that will be Mumbai, India. They are at level 5 and I will be rewarded with an assault sergeant as a new recruit.
Operation Morbid Prophet Date: 05/16/2015 Location: Mumbai, India Objective: Sweep and neutralize hostiles
We have a solid squad going in with Law and Warlord back together at last. We deploy and start inching forward slowly employing our usual tactic and of cover and overwatch. Suddenly two floaters drop from the roof of a big building and Warlord and Kodos tag tem them, with Kodos taking one out. Law goes run and gun, but misses the second floater, as 3 more appear inside the building. This could get tricky, Palmer moves up to a fountain and lays down smoke to cover Law and CW. Gale lines up a floater inside the building and ends its evening with a headshot. Kodos takes a tough shot at the second floater outside and misses, while Warlord suppresses it. Now we need to weather a counter attack. Plasma streams at us from inside the building, but misses and the floater outside cannot get a shot off, strategy worked. Law misses the floater outside again, the smoke seems to be affecting us too, but Palmer blasts another floater inside the building, earning a kill. Gale is on point again, taking out the last floater inside the building, leaving just the pesky one right in front of us. Kodos misses and Warlord has to reload, so it will get one more crack at us. The floater fires and Warlord is wounded, but the smoke as cleared and Law lines it up, fires and misses!!! WTH? Palmer lets it go and moves up to heal Warlord instead. Gale has a clear shot and hits it, but it doesn’t go down, dammit. Kodos misses and Warlord has seen enough. As she is getting patched, she zeroes in and brings the pain, dispatching the last floater to wherever aliens go when they explode. Before we can regroup a trio of thin men appear from a back area of the building and try to flank us. Law has to reload and Palmer misses, but Gale does not, scoring the hat trick with a well place round to the chest of one of the thin bastards. Warlord draws a bead on the bogey trying to move around us to the left and puts him in the dirt. The final thin man poisons Law, which he takes exception to and goes into run and gun mode, skirting to the side of the thin man his shotgun blast decapitates it. All is quiet again, but we are not done and take the time to reload and discuss a plan of action going forward as the job is not complete. Kodos moves up to cure Law as we hear noises to the north. We will have to enter the building. Kodos, Law and Gale move in from the east and then head north through a maze of cubicles, while Warlord and Palmer enter from a west entrance and move in a pincher action towards the other team. Kodos at last makes contact with two more thin men and they take off, one running through a door and right into a shotgun blast to the head from Law, though Law is poisoned from the aliens death in such close proximity. On top of the nausea he is now feeling, Law takes some plasma rash and we all know what is coming next. Screaming, Law rushes the alien and rips it’s organs out with a blast of buckshot, mission complete. Summary Operation Morbid Prophet - Success Aliens killed: 10 – Excellent Operatives lost: 0 – Excellent Artifacts recovered 5 floater corpses, 5 thin man corpses, 20 weapon fragments. Promotions: Da Law II – Sergeant, earning the nickname ‘Chops’ and training in close and personal , which inflicts a 30% critical chance against adjacent targets, right up his alley. Benton Gale II – Captain, trains in opportunist eliminating the aim penalty on reaction shots, also allowing them to cause critical hits. Kid Kodos II – Corporal, trains in sprint allowing movement of 3 additional tiles. Coffee Warlord – Captain, trains in danger zone, increasing area of suppression and adding distance to rocket attacks. Three is the magic number here as Gale and Law each dispatch a trio of little green men, Warlord gets 2, while Palmer and Kodos account for one each. As we head home we get news that panic has reached critical levels in Brazil, threatening not only the home of BJJ, but carnivale as well. We will have to fix that. Law, due to his usual reckless manner is on the shelf for 5 days as he recovers from his wounds. Panic in India is decreased by 3, but it increases in Europe and South America. We gain Sergeant Yash Singh, an assault specialist who can step in during one of Law’s many stints on the DL. Most important is with two Captains in the tow now we can purchase squad size 2, so 6 men can now come on missions and I purchase this right away after selling 5 spare floater corpses. Always helps having an 'insider' on the X-com team You have already gone on two missions |

It's about time we had one of these dynasties pretend to go well before we get totally screwed
There's no real way to build the dramatic tension of a comeback in X-Com, tho. If you suffer a critical defeat, you're pretty much done even if you don't know it right off the bat. SI

Base operations
We finish research on the UFO power source and can now produce an elerium generator, which will greatly boost power output at the base. Next up is light plasma rifle research. May 25th, 2015 After several days of quiet a large UFO is spotted in Australia, we dispatch an interceptor and hope for the best. It is a brutal battle and we lose the interceptor, dammit! May 26th, 2015 Satellite uplink is complete, giving us greater coverage capability. I need to build a new interceptor, but no funds. Still smarting from the loss of our interceptor I am summoned to the situation room. A remote observatory is under attack and we are ordered to go save the scientist there. We will be rewarded with 2 scientists and 157 credits if successful. Off to the Sky Ranger. Operation Burning Hydra Date: 05/26/2015 Location: Kolkata, India Objective: Escort target safely to the extraction point
We secure the scientist in the observatory and start take up positions by the doors leading out, ready for anything. Thomas opens the west door out and startles 2 thin men, who immediately sprint for cover and higher ground. They have obviously heard of our reputation. Gonzalez sprints through the door and around the corner, leaning back out he takes aim and drops one of the thin men, who had taken a position on the roof. Poli has a bead on the other from just inside the door and puts it to sleep as well. Warlord sprints into the yard for cover and spots two more thin men, they move to flank him as Thomas takes a shot at one and misses, leaving CW in a bad position. One of the thin men runs at Warlord, but Sexton has him covered and takes a reaction shot, snuffing him out. Another alien has Gonzalez flanked and tags him, leaving him wounded. Gonzalez rolls to cover behind some crates and returns fire, taking his antagonist out. Poli climbs up on top of a roof and takes a position where she can see most of the yard. We get the professor out into the yard and take up cover, when a thin man drops right into our midst out of nowhere. Fox McCloud takes a reaction shot and the thin man is no more. McCloud moves up and spots yet another thin man by the extraction site. The alien dives for cover and McCloud goes to overwatch. Warlord moves up and lays down a field of suppression fire on the thin man. Poli takes a bead on skinny little bastard from her perch up high and dispatches it. Thomas moves forward and stumbles into another thin man, putting him down before the alien can react. DJ has come a long way since his days as rookie in need of a diaper. We continue to inch forward to the extraction point and as we close in Sexton establishes position on the tallest building in the area, where he has a perfect overview of the safety zone. Another thin man drops out of the sky just east of pick up area, but Thomas is ready and takes him out. With this threat gone, the professor gets to the pickup point and is safely extracted. Summary Operation Burning Hydra - Success Aliens killed: 8 – Excellent Operatives lost: 0 – Excellent Artifacts recovered 8 thin man corpses, 16 weapon fragments. Promotions: Poli Rules – Captain, trains in opportunist, eliminating the penalty on reaction shots. David Gonzalez – Sergeant, trains in field medic, allowing a medikits to be used 3 times a battle. (a huge boon) DJ Thomas – Corporal, trains in bullet swarm, which no longer ends the turn when the primary weapon is fired first. Fox McCloud – Corporal, trains in covering fire, allowing reaction shots to trigger on attacks. Gonzalez, Poli and Thomas score 2 notches, while Sexton and McCloud each bag a single. Even Dr. Vahlen is impressed with the efficiency of this extraction as she can’t find anything to bitch about. We earn 157 credits, reduce panic in India and get 2 more scientists as a reward and best of all nobody will be down from injuries. Bring on the next!! |

Council Report – June 2015
Grade – C Monthly Rewards Credits – 485 Scientists – 2 Engineers – 2 Brazil has withdrawn due to the UFO I let escape and it killed our grade, damn!! Panic Levels USA, Mexico, India and Egypt = 1 Nobody = 2 Canada, Argentina, South Africa, France, Germany, Japan and Nigeria = 3 United Kingdom, Russia, China = 4 Out Brazil Apparently one should never let a UFO escape, it seems like that hurt us everywhere. I need to focus on improving our interceptors going forward. This could go downhill really quick! I do get the Satellite launched over China and earn 200 credits for that, with just one day left to fulfill the request too, whew. Base operations June 2nd, 2015 I order 2 new interceptors, 5 Phoenix cannons, 3 targeting uplinks and 5 defense matrix systems for the interceptors. Going all out for improvements I also start a weapons platform drone and an improved scope, each will take a few days to complete. June 7th, 2015 Research complete on light plasma rifle, meaning I can produce them and use any I recover in the field. Thinking Da Law gets first crack at this one. Interceptor was also deployed to China. Go to make a Plasma rifle but I am short on alloys, crap! June8th, 2015 Heavy Weapons platform is complete which allows production of a SHIV. This will help going into crash sites in particular and I get one immediately, as well as one more scope June 9th, 2015 Three more abduction alerts come in and we have little choice but to take the Birmingham, UK job as panic level is a 4 there. This will be very difficult and we will get 4 engineers if successful. Last edited by BYU 14 : 11-26-2012 at 04:45 PM. |

Operation Crystal Justice
Date: 06/09/2015 Location: Birmingham, UK Objective: Sweep and neutralize hostiles
Wish the SHIV was ready, but alas it is not. We touch down in a dark commercial district and disembark with caution. As soon as Law moves he spots 3 thin men and is caught in the open unable to fire. Warlord moves to cover and misses, so Gonzalez creeps behind a truck and drops smoke in front of Law. The thin men go on the attack and one fires wildly missing everybody, but the other two shoot poison and both CW and Warlord take a dose. Sexton misses a head shot and Coffee Warlord has already seen enough, spitting poison and cursing he unloads the rocket and all three thin men go to pieces. Next we see something new, appears to be an machine type apparatus and both Law and Poli miss reaction shots. The poison cloud clears and Sexton takes a crack at the new beastie, blowing it to pieces. From further examination CW proclaims it a drone beam, though half the squad thinks she is just making shit up. Something big and powerful looking is lurking in the darkness and it appears to be a large disc and very well put together. Sexton is hurting so Gonzalez moves up to heal him. Poli moves up on top of the building the thin men came from and everyone else goes to overwatch and waits. Poli moves to the edge of the roof and spots 2 mutons, it’s about to get good! Sexton misses again and Warlord lays down suppression fire. Fox McCloud wounds one and instead of dropping he gets pissed and tosses a grenade, wounding Poli badly. The other fires at Warlord, but misses. Now our turn as Poli, despite being exposed lines up the wound muton and dispatches it. Sexton misses and Gonzalez takes a huge chance, running into the open and also missing. Law now has a choice, does he run and gun to save Gonzalez, knowing he is likely dead if he doesn’t kill the muton, or take a shot and hope the muton comes back at him instead of Gonzalez. He does what he does and runs at the creature blasting it in the face, but it does not die!!! The creature opens up on Law at close range and scores a direct hit, but the carapace armor saves his ass, YES!! Law falls back, lines the muton up and finishes the job. Nicely done, now time to heal. Gonzalez (that X3 medikit is really coming in handy!!) heals some of Law’s wounds while McCloud gives Sexton another dose of medicine. Poli moves up along the roof, but she is badly wounded and has to be careful! It sounds like something is behind the video store and that large metallic freaky thing is still out there, so we have to be careful. As we move through and around a bookstore we spot the large disc like being and it is intimidating. Poli has a shot, but no support, so I move her back to full cover. As we work to get position three floaters appear and Gonzalez and McCloud open up. One falls and McCloud is credited with the kill. McCloud and Gonzalez both miss a second shot at one and Law sprints to flank them. Sexton slips out a back door, flanks the floater and also misses, this damn thing is a cat!! Warlord lays down suppression fire and they shoot back, but nobody is hit. Gonzalez fires again and clips one, but it remains in play. Sexton has to retreat and Warlord needs to reload so McCloud finishes the wounded floater. The floater hunkers down, so Sexton goes to join Poli on the roof and ends up in the line of sight of the disc, oh no. Warlord and McCloud take pops at the third floater but both miss again. This is getting intense. The disc drops down and takes cover by the floater, bullet dodged. Gonzalez wounds the floater with a quick burst. Poli moves to the edge of the building and hunkers down as Warlord pins the aliens down with suppression fire. The floater gets off a blast of plasma, missing Warlord and McCloud, but taking out a piece of the wall right behind where Gonzalez is positioned. Law is in a bad spot, he has both creatures flanked if they advance, but to charge would be suicide, he has to stand down. Gonzalez fails to connect again, but Poli does not, blasting the disc from the roof top dead on, but it appears to do little damage. Sexton moves to the edge of the roof and takes down the last floater, now just the big guy left, we hope. McCloud lays down smoke to make the remaining foes job tougher and instead of attacking it slips back into the night. As we move up the disc comes back and Sexton wounds it again, in response it unleashes a fusillade of projectiles that miss him. Warlord moves up and suppresses, McCloud moves forward and hits it again, it still doesn’t go down. Law, feeling held down, finally goes John Wayne again, once again tagging the disc, but it is still up. Poli puts an end to the nonsense and takes careful aim for the edge of the roof and puts it away at last. As it goes into its death throes it explodes in a bright flash, but luckily we are all at a safe distance, even that maniac Law. Mission over!! Summary Operation Crystal Justice - Success Aliens killed: 10 – Excellent Operatives lost: 0 – Excellent Artifacts recovered 3 thin man corpses, 3 floater corpses, 2 muton corpses, 1 cyberdisc wreck and 1 drone wreck. In addition we get 20 weapon fragments, 6 elerium and 12 alloys. We can also ‘autopsy’ the two new additions to our most wanted list. Promotions: Da Law II – Lieutenant, trains in rapid fire, giving him two shots at an enemy at a aim penalty. I also forgot to mention he has been christened ‘Chops’ by his teammates. Shane Sexton – Sergeant, trains in damn high ground getting a +10 aim and defense against enemies at a lower elevation, will go good with snap shot. He is also given the nickname ‘Pharaoh’ Fox McCloud – Sergeant, trains in field medic, so like Gonzalez he has 3 medikits to use. The team dubs him ‘Missionary’ on the flight home. Our most intense mission yet, despite the success, it was grueling and we avoided some tight spots. Coffee Warlord earns 3 kills form her early fireworks display while Sexton, Poli and McCloud all tally 2. Law II checks in with our final kill giving him a total of 11 after 5 sorties. We do take some damage on this one as Law will be down 4 days, Poli 6 days and Sexton 7 days as they recover from their wounds. We get further bad news on the way back as panic increases to critical levels in both Australia and South Africa, but fortunately it goes down to 1 in the UK as we are sent 4 engineers in appreciation. |

June 11th, 2015 A US corporation wants 6 Muton corpses, I have 3 right now so I will hopefully run into a few more in the next 20 days. June 15th, 2015 Medium UFO spotted over the US, I hate these the most but have to scramble an interceptor. This time we take it down easily though and the Skyranger is dispatched. Operation Red Heart Date: 06/15/2015 Location: Rural USA Objective: Locate UFO and neutralize hostiles
We advance slowly as it is dark and cover is sparse with all the burning trees and foliage. We hear noises to the north, so continue on course trying not to expose anyone. As we creep up two mutons and two floaters appear. Kodos rips off a shot at one of the mutons and wounds it. We are outnumbered on the left flank, so this will be tricky. Kodos and Law open up on a floater but both miss, likewise for Thomas as he unloads on a muton. Palmer lays down smoke to shield Thomas, while Gale lines up the wounded muton and drops it from distance, great shot. Silvers lines up the other muton and tags it, inflicting grave wounds and intimidating it, but it is still alive. The wounded muton freaks out and retreats, but doesn’t fire, while Law gets a spoonful of his medicine as floater suppresses him. Kodos lines up the offender but misses. Palmer misses the wounded muton, while Gales draws a bead on the floater suppressing Law and sends it to hell! Silvers edges around some debris and finishes the wounded muton with his pistol. The second floater ventures toward us and is promptly sent scurrying back on a reaction shot form Law, who misses. Angered at his incompetence, Law goes rapid fire mode and tears the floaters heart out with his shotgun, quiet time again. Law sprints forward and almost runs headlong into 3 more mutons, shit, this is bad!! Kodos doesn’t like the odds so lays down smoke to cover him and Law until the squad can close in. Thomas sees an opportunity to be a hero and snatches it, unleashing the rocket and wounding two of the mutons, while obliterating their cover. Gale has been money all day from his perch and promptly puts the kiss of death on one of the wounded mutons. Silvers has the other one lined up and follows suit, we have turned a bad situation on our favor! Thomas pursues the third muton, who has retreated, but misses, followed by a rare miss from Gale. The muton comes back at us and Law misses a reaction shot. He has the muton dead to rights, but has to reload. Kodos has no such dilemma and wounds it. Thomas moves up and this time scores, but the muton is still up, barely. Gale has to reload, so it will be up to Silvers. Sterling lines the muton up, fires, and the muton goes off to the big sleep. We move into the ship and an outsider appears and heads to the bridge. Looks like Law will be called upon here. Suddenly the alien appears and hits Kodos, but the Kid is OK. Law sprints in from the other side of the ship and empties his shotgun into the outsiders face, drawing cheers from the boys and another bitch out from Dr. Vahlen for not capturing it. Screw it, we win again!! Summary Operation Red Heart - Success Aliens killed: 8 – Excellent Operatives lost: 0 – Excellent Artifacts recovered 2 floater corpses, 5 muton corpses, 26 weapon fragments, 37 elerium and 74 alloys. We also get 4 UFO flight computers (2 damaged) and 2 UFO power sources. (1 damaged) Promotions: DJ Thomas II – Sergeant, trains in shredder rocket, causing extra damage to any enemies hit for the next 4 turns. He is also given the moniker ‘Nuke’ for his heroics with the big toy this mission. Deacon Palmer II – Corporal, trains in sprinter earning the extra 3 tile sprint bonus. Sterling Silvers II – Corporal, trains in snap shot allowing fire from his sniper rifle after movement with a penalty. Another one for the ages, how we extricated ourselves from that three muton mess Law ran into I will never know, but we pulled it off with good positioning and clutch shots. Thomas is the hero even though he got no kills as his rocket shot turned the tide. It is the day of the sniper as Gale and Silvers each get a trifecta and Law takes out the other 2 in his usual subtle style. * Note: I have never had a run like this playing on classic, which means it is going to suck all that much more if/when we finally lose someone. This team is pretty damn lethal right now!! |

First thing when we get back is to sell the muton corpses to the USA, and the damages flight computers and power source, 130 credits go into the coffers. Next up, production ordered on a light plasma rifle. The SHIV is now finished as well, which will help a great deal as we continue to run into more volatile situations. June 18th, 2015 Our second terror mission as Beijing is under attack, this will be a tough one and luckily everyone is back to full health. I will be debuting the plasma rifle, but won’t take the SHIV, saving it for downed UFO, so off we go!! Operation Crystal Shroud Date: 06/18/2015 Location: Beijing, China – Terror mission Objective: Evacuate civilians and neutralize hostiles
Total carnage where we land and within moments of disembarking 2 civilians are gone, we have no time to play it safe and go slow here, a recipe for disaster. As we run up and get into place 2 chryssalids appear, welcome back old friends as Law wounds one with a reaction shot and Warlord finishes it. McCloud gets off a reaction shot on the other and wounds it as well, but another civilian bites the dust. Rules fires at the second and hits it again, it is barely clinging to life, which McCloud remedies with a well placed burst. Law moves to direct the nearest civilian to the exit craft and hits the chryssalid jackpot, five of the bastards appear and four are in his line of sight. Discretion equals valor and Law uses run and gun to drop back and fire, wounding 1. Gonzalez lays down smoke and we hope for the best as they advance, two taking out more civilians and a third gravely wounding Sexton. Shane goes to the pistol and dispatches the wounded chryssalid before he can end his life. Law hits rapid fire on the chryssalid standing over him and annihilates it in a flash of plasma. Gonzalez moves up and gives first aid to Sexton, while Warlord moves to flank another chryssalid and wounds it. It moves and takes out another civilian as 3 more dead ones become zombies. One is able to reach McCloud and takes him to deaths doorstep, the stakes are now raised. McCloud has to pull back and heal or he is dead, so I get him out of there. Warlord has a tough choice, fire a rocket and maybe take out 2 chryssalids, 2-3 civilians and maybe himself or pull back, he pulls back. Gonzalez backs up and hits a zombie, but only for light damage, while Poli takes out a chryssalid. We are still in big trouble!! Sexton hits the same zombie as Gonzalez, but it still stands and Law will have to make something big happen. He finishes off the stubborn Zombie, but two are still close enough to hit us. One of the zombies advances on Sexton and delivers a lethal blow, we have lost our first soldier in nearly three months. As if this was not bad enough a disc and two drones appear, we are screwed!!! We are in all out retreat mode to get out of harms way, everyone but Warlord who knows the last chryssalid has to die so he takes it out with the rocket and manages to wound a zombie. Things are now spiraling out of control as zombies advance on CW and would her, she is also out of ammo and will have to run. A chryssalid sprouts from a zombie and advances with one of the undead on Law. He has no chance as both hit him ending his life, meanwhile Gonzalez and McCloud panic, it can’t get any worse. Poli takes aim at the closest zombie and dispatches it, but will it be enough? Poli take egregious damage from a chryssalid and a zombie Law, while Gonzalez is wounded by a projectile from the disc. He falls back and fires on the chryssalid, missing it and most likely dooming Poli, who now sprints for cover. McCloud drops back a lays down smoke, a desperate attempt to shield the retreat, while Warlord falls back and reloads. Another chryssalid sprouts and charges McCloud killing him, Warlord panics and wounds the chryssalid, but it still stands. Gonzalez falls to another chryssalid and Poli is now face to face with the zombie of Law. She panics, misses and goes down critically wounded and there is no way to save her. Warlord is surrounded and decides to go out in a blaze of glory, taking out the chryssalid standing over Poli. Another Chryssalid moves in behind Warlord and she never sees the limb that penetrates her back and ends her life. Summary Operation Crystal Shroud - Failure Aliens killed: 9 – Poor Operatives lost: 6 – Poor Civilians saved: 0 – Terrible Artifacts recovered None Promotions: None Our biggest disaster yet, 6 seasoned operatives lost, China withdraws from the council (doom tracker 2 of 8) and panic in Japan and India hits 5. I can’t believe we lost everyone, including two captains, this really hurts as flags are already half mast when the Skyranger lands at base. |

Here is our roster after the debacle in China, now we are behind the 8 ball, with the only consolation bering Law III comes in as a sergeant, thanks to an earlier mission. We may have lost too much to recover from.

heh. I watched the Zero Punctuation on this game. He loved the game. He saw that eventually the game gets too hard and ends up killing everybody and ceasing any reason to continue as the game then doesn't get easier to have rookies in it that will obviously all die. BUt still really loved it.

Terror missions (at least the first or second one) can also be very luck-of-the-draw-ish. It all depends on when you can find the chryssalids and how fast you can kill them off when you do find them. I've had ones where I found them immediately and killed them within a couple of turns, leaving mop-up against whatever was left, and I've found them late and wound up had them rampaging through my ranks after I thought I had the battle won. Fortunately the one I've had in my current game was more the former as I found them quick and then I was able to light them up either with rockets or assault attacks at close range that eliminated them before they could really become a menace (that bubble showing the range of rocket damage is a feature that I cannot do without...more than once I've slid that bubble to just the right spot to kill two or three enemies just at the edge of the bubble while avoiding my own fighters in the process).

Yeah, we breezed through the first one and i was shocked at how easy it was. Once I activated that pocket of 6 of them it was pretty much done, no way to get to them all before multiple zombies were unleashed and I had to take chances, which is the exact opposite of how I usually play a mission. Hopefully we recover, will see later today |

No time to mourn as we get notice of abductions. Nigeria has a panic level of 4, so that is the choice, we dry our tears and load up, into the fray once more. The reward will be four scientists.
Operation Falling Sleep Date: 06/20/2015 Location: Port Harcourt, Nigeria Objective: Sweep and neutralize hostiles
It doesn’t take long as Gale sprints to get an upfront position to snipe from and two floaters appear. He has to fire with his pistol and misses both. Great, our top ranking operative is in peril from jump. It gets better as rookie CW II sprints to help and alerts 3 sectoids in a building. Still, we can handle these, but 5 aliens are now on to us. The junior Law goes run and gun and plants a floater in the dirt with his gauge. Kodos rushes up to Warlords position but misses a sectoid. Palmer lays down smoke in front of the second floater as it is the biggest threat and we hope for the best. Palmer and Warlord both get hit, Palmer critically and panic….not good, but they are alive. Law and Benton need to make hay, but they both miss their shots and Law is now exposed to the floater. The panic leaves Thomas no choice and he has to fire his rocket into the building. It makes a mess but only 1 sectoid bought the farm. Kodos eschews healing and goes for the mind linked sectoids, but misses. We are sure to feel some wrath now. We get lucky as the floater misses a wide open Law and only one of the sectoids hits the rookie CW, who is clinging to life, but just barely. CW gets the hell out of dodge and find cover out of the aliens line of sight, while Law ducks behind a truck and hopes to ambush the floater if it moves. Palmer heals, while Gale draws a bead on a sectoid and dispatches it. Kodos misses the other sectoid and we will have to withstand another assault before we can regroup. Out of nowhere a muton appears in the building where the sectoid is and blasts Kodos, who panics!! Law jumps out to whack the floater and two more mutons appear in an adjacent building. This is a no win situation, so he has to retreat. He takes out the floater on run and gun, but is still in a bad spot. Thomas realizes he discharged the shredder rocket his first shot and still has the big one. Now is the time so he fires at the first muton. He kills the sectoid in that building but the muton is still up. Palmer tries to finish it but misses, here come the bad guys. A muton advances and Gale takes aim, wounding it, but not stopping the charge. The muton Palmer missed returns fire and scores a direct hit, Palmer dies a grotesquely painful death, while a second muton suppresses Law. Thomas fires at a muton looking to flank Law and wounds it. Gale steps up and finishes it off. Kodos tries smoke to relieve the suppression, but to no avail. Law makes a break and the muton misses, he drops and reloads the shotgun. The mutons fire back, one misses Law and as a second advances Warlord wounds it with a reaction shot. We are still in it and look to counter. Law and Kodos both miss their targets, Thomas is wounded as he moves up for a better angle and returns fire, missing the culprit that hit him. Gale has to reload and Warlord misses, we are still in trouble. Three mutons miss but the 4th critically injures Thomas. He needs to be stabilized and seeing him hit makes Warlord panic again and she fires wildly. Another muton tosses a grenade, blowing up a taxi and putting Gale in critical condition while wounding Law. Law goes nuts and rushes the muton, smacking him with a blast of shotgun pellets in the face, but he stays up!! Kodos, moves up in desperation and finishes it off with a pistol shot. Kodos now sprints for Gale and avoids a reaction shot, stabilizing the Captain, CW shows immense courage and runs into the open, chucking a grenade and wounding a muton flanking Kodos. Law dives behind a counter, pops up and takes out a muton near the back of the building. One of the two remaining mutons we can see lines up Warlord and tears her open, she is dead before she hits the ground and Law panics. Kodos has to reload and a muton takes advantage and runs up and blows his head off at the same time Thomas bleeds out. Law reloads and opts to stay low and wait. Big mistake as a muton pops out and finishes him. Another dismal failure. Summary Operation Falling Sleep - Failure Aliens killed: 8 – Poor Operatives lost: 6 – Terrible Artifacts recovered None Promotions: None F me, two catastrophic forays in a row and this one wipes out all our experience, can’t wait for the good news and it comes fast. Nigeria, Russia, France and Canada all go to 5 in panic. This is getting really bad!! We have one operative left with experience now. |

LOL, after the great run of CW I, it didn't take the second incarnation long to fall into old patterns did it? Hopefully we make it to the end of the month before we are wiped out.....(once my issues with steam are resolved) Last edited by BYU 14 : 12-04-2012 at 09:11 AM. |

Well, our engineers got a little lazy after the amazing success of that particular unit. They got arrogant, and clearly some design flaws crept back into later models. After a long talk with management, we're confident this new model is better than ever.

Base operations
I put in a request for 6 new soldiers, we have 5 right now plus the SHIV, so they will get the next mission. India requests 2 scopes and I only have 3, so they will have to wait until I can buy a couple more Council Report – July 2015 We make it all the way to the council report with no further action, but the news is bad right off the bat. India, Japan and Nigeria have all withdrawn from the project, so much for the gentle approach. Grade – C Monthly Rewards Credits – 485 Scientists – 2 Engineers – 2 Panic Levels USA, Mexico, and United Kingdom = 2 Argentina and Egypt = 3 Germany and Australia = 4 Canada, Russia, France, South Africa = 5 Out Brazil China Japan India Nigeria We are now at 5 of 8 on the doom meter. I start research on beam weapons, SHIV suppression and order a couple of scopes and light plasma rifle. In 5 days beam weapon research is complete and we can now use laser rifles and pistols. Next up research on a skeleton suit. On July 7th we get word of more abductions. Canada and Russia are both at 5 panic, but Russia is more critical at this time, so Canada has to be neglected. I load up the best I can and we get ready to face god knows what with a crew full of greenhorns. Mutons have to eat too Quote:
This game is good is like a hot woman, draw you in then tears your heart out and stomps on it.....Only with plasma cannons instead of high heels!! |

Operation Patient Moon
Date: 07/06/2015 Location: Moscow, Russia Objective: Sweep and neutralize hostiles
With such a green squad we take the SHIV and give plasma rifles to Gale and Rules, hoping it will be enough. We set down on a dark downtown street and head out. Thomas immediately spots tow mutons as he sprints to a car and they dive behind a taxi, might as well start with the tough ones. I send the SHIV up and leave it exposed to draw fire, though it misses with a burst from its mini-gun. Warlord gets up to Thomas and also misses, now our rookies are about to get baptized. The mutons both go for the SHIV and damage it, but it is still on play, plan worked. Poli moves up and hits the mutons cover with a grenade, starting it on fire, which will flush them out. Thomas and Silvers both miss, but the SHIV wounds one of the mutons with a short burst. Gale misses and Warlord lightly wounds the second muton, now they get a crack at us again. The SHIV goes bye-bye on their next attack and Poli takes a solid hit, but the car they are behind blows up and kills one. Guess Poli gets credit for a kill there. Poli falls back to get treatment as Thomas misses the standing muton but Silvers does not, dispatching it with a well placed shot. Silver spooks two more mutons as he advances and falls back, as Gale misses a shot. Three thin men quickly join the fun and we are about to get put to the test. We dodge a bullet as the thin men fall back and only one muton fires, missing Thomas. Gale lobs his grenade at the muton and wounds it, taking its cover out as well. Warlord lines the now open muton up and drills it, wounding it further but not killing it. That honor will fall to Silvers who nabs his second kill. Holy shit, three more mutons come up to join, are you kidding me? They take positions and we have to make something happen. Thomas and Gale miss their shots, but Silvers is able to wound the closest muton. Poli needs to make a big shot and she misses as well. Déjŕ vu all over again. A thin man moves up and wounds Gale, followed by a grenade that kills Gale, Poli and Thomas, sonof…….We are screwed again. Warlord goes down courtesy of a second thin man and Silvers takes a plasma blast to the face ending his life as well. We suck again, though in fairness we had no chance once those three extra mutons joined the parade. Summary Operation Patient Moon - Failure Aliens killed: 3 – Terrible Operatives lost: 5 – Terrible (plus a SHIV) Artifacts recovered None Promotions: None This could be our death knell and I wait for the news as the empty Skyranger comes home. Germany goes into mass panic, but no other bad news, as if I need any. At this point it is hopeless, but we will go to the last man. |

Base operations
I sell some elerium to order a new SHIV, though not sure how much good that will do. We are down to 6 soldiers and no money to request more right now, hopefully it stays quiet. On July 8th South Africa requests 18 alien alloys, which we send for 150 credits. I request 5 new soldiers and order a laser rifle. July 9th we get a report of a UFO landing in the United States, the Skyranger fires up its engines and we will do the best we can. Operation Demon Dawn Date: 07/09/2015 Location: Rural USA Objective: Locate and neutralize hostiles
Six rookies going into an undamaged UFO landing site, this should be fun. We move up very slowly, taking advantage of intact cover, as the base tells us to expect heavy resistance since this was a landing…..no shit and thanks!! We have position on a rise above the crash site, so I decide to try and draw them out. Two mutons and a large red beast finally appear and Kodos misses a reaction shot. I am not going to give up position, Kodos fires from behind his rock but misses, Sexton also fires and wounds a muton. The red thing comes at us and Gonzalez, Palmer and McCloud all take reaction shots, but only McCloud hits, wounding it. A muton fires and Kodos is wounded badly. He retreats and drills the muton that got him, but it does not fall. Law, Gonzalez and Sexton all miss!! McCloud heals Kodos and Palmer tags the big thing, knocking it’s health down a bit. The Hulk looking creature comes right up next to us, while the mutons fire, one missing, one hitting Law. Law takes aim at the red menace and peppers it, then panics after the beast lets out a scream and comes to stand above him. McCloud and Palmer panic too, both missing the big thing badly. Kodos misses it, Sexton scores a hit and Gonzalez finally finishes it off!! A muton comes up and flanks us and blasts Sexton, killing him and sending nearly everyone into a panic, for hells sake!! Palmer fires and misses and we lose a big tree covering us as the far muton suppresses us, while the bastard on the flanks lobs a grenade. Palmer and Law die, down to three. Kodos launches a grenade and wounds the muton flanking us, causing it to scamper off. We regroup and reload. Creeping down the right flank of the UFO Gonzalez misses a muton that briefly pops out. As we continue the muton shows again and trades fire with McCloud, the alien is wounded, McCloud untouched. Gonzalez drills the alien, who lets out a shriek causing both Kodos and Gonzalez to panic. McCloud shakes his head and ducks behind a log. With his teammates still sniveling, McCloud calmly takes care of the threat. The badly wound muton appears again and Gonzalez finishes it after a Kodos miss. We get to the side of the craft and as we inch our way up three more mutons appear, the resulting fire fight is short and predictable, all three operatives go down in a hail of plasma, another failure. Summary Operation Demon Dawn - Failure Aliens killed: 3 – Terrible Operatives lost: 6 – Terrible Artifacts recovered None Promotions: None This is pretty much the end of X-Com as we get hit with another abduction mission before replacement soldiers can arrive. Four more nations drop and we are done. You fought bravely lads, but in the end the earth is destined to be controlled by large ugly beings not named Shawn Kemp. |

It is just insane how the difficulty level suddenly jumped x10 in this thing. I was actually thinking the game was too easy even on classic, then that Terror mission just dismembered us. Once we lost that much experience we were pretty much screwed.

Yeah, you hit a point where you go...OMG, enough..
One of my missions was 8 Chryssalids, 2 Cyberdiscs, 4 drones, 4 Mutons...Yeah our 6 guys are going to wipe that out...oh, and don't forget the 4 or 5 zombies that were coming after us too...

I have a heavy who reached the top rank on the basis of a staggering 3 kill/mission ratio (over 40 kills so far) and I'm now confronting an epic loss whenever she finally bites it in a mission. This has become a WOPR "the only winning move is not to play" moment because I don't want to see it all go to pot. Your post is not helping. |
