It looked like to guys in suits pushing against each other. I know they were going for the homage to the original Godzilla suit look, but it didn't work for me. To each his own. |

6/10 for me.
Only because I ponied up and spent the big 3D screen money and whatnot. Honestly, with the new Tom Cruise movie preview in 3d, I would've had a migrane if that 3 min was expanded 2 hours. I was already borderline vertigo after that trailer. The flick was enjoyable and very predictable IMO. Hell, its Godzilla, not Shakespeare. Lets be real. Worth seeing in the theater for those hi-fi geeks, but not must see for me.

I can say I enjoyed it a great deal, but my own internal expectations kinda let me down. The cinematography was way too dark and so much of the good monster fighting was in the dark and way too dusty to really see and enjoy what little of it there was.
There was nothing to complain about in the story or the acting IMO, but I'd have liked to see way more destruction as it happens, not just the aftermath. Also, not really a spoiler, but there is NO after-credits bonus movie. I'd heard there was but it's false info. 8/10 - would not pay to see it again |

I will take exception to those who thought the writing/plot was going to suck as I thought it was the best part of the movie by far |

I watched Monsters last night - the first movie by Gareth Edwards. Even though it was done on a shoestring budget ($500,000) and the special effects are fairly lame, it was pretty decent. There are a couple of things unexplained or maybe I missed (like why the gas masks all the time?), the focused story and building sense of drama engaged me more than Godzilla, though the "popcorn fun" factor is definitely in Godzilla's favor.
I'd love to see Cloverfield done again without the jumpy camera and with characters who weren't quite as douchy as the ones in the original. The plot, pacing, suspense and motivations are really well done in that one. |

for anyone thinking of seeing it - skip the 3D and the extra price - it didn't add to the movie AT ALL

I generally hate 3D and avoid it if possible. It adds nothing.

I hadn't thought about that. Cloverfield was a pretty crappy movie experience for me but, really, it was because the characters and cinematography were so awful. The characters were all unlikable so that literally 15 minutes in, my wife and I just started cheering "monster! monster!" because we wanted it to show up and eat the giant worthless pile of humanity. Secondly, yeah, the camera work trying to make it the Blair Witch Godzilla was awful.

Avatar was the one movie I can think of where it made a difference. SI

Agreed. That was the only positive 3D experience I've had.

I think I saw that in 2D. But maybe not.

Avatar, Gravity, Life of Pi, and pretty much everything animated tends to be worth it.

Looking past the fact that Life of Pi was a terrible movie.

Just got back from this.
I wish there was more Godzilla and less people. It was pretty good. I clapped when the fins started lighting up. I was waiting for Godzilla to use his weapon. I enjoyed myself. I dont see 3D. So Its a waste for me.

Dont worry, the 3D was basically a waste for everyone in this.

Agreed. I was thinking of good 3D films and realized ... they're pretty much all animated. (I thought of "Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Gahoule" (sp.) and "How to Train Your Dragon" right off the bat - 2 of the best 3D films I've seen).

Godzilla minus Zero looks to be how I would like this done, if you go back up this thread and read my Manifesto. Toho is much more the style I want than our Marvel versions.

This is a fun review/ranking of 45 movies that feature Godzilla and/or King Kong. If you're a Godzilla fan, you'll likely enjoy it.

Godzilla Minus One is easily my favorite. I’m really happy they put such a great treatment together, worked character development, and made such a great and beautiful looking film. Takes so much to make me happy on these things, and I give great credit to the team who made this.

It's always tricky to make a Godzilla movie, but also needing to focus on the regular people, since a giant lizard can't be on screen for 90 minutes. I agree with you that they did a good job with this one.
