Here is an example of what you can run into on Orcish Mines level 3 even, as I just did.
I descended to level 3 and was greeted by an Orc Warlord and his festive party. Luckily I went right back up without getting smited by the priests. I marked the stairs as dangerous and went back to the dungeon.

Ummm....Mommy? would have been my reaction to that scene I just descended to Level 1 in the Mines before I posted that and there's three or four orcs waiting for me when I get back to it-including a Wizard, but thankfully just regular orcs otherwise.

Yeah I've really been looking forward to getting another character ready for the first few levels of the mines, I just had another that was rolling along when I ran into some orcs, very possibly I'd found the entrance to the mines, something confused me right away(a wizard I assume) and I didn't have anything to clear it up (at least nothing identified) so I wasn't able to berserk and was killed really really quickly.

Regular old orc wizards and priests have probably killed more of my characters than anything. They're wily and tough.

I apparently really suck at this game, cause I am not finding any of these other dungeons - I am probably just dying way too quick.

Dzilla they are down around Level 8 and beyond-they will appear as yellow stairs going down. Its the first time I've reached them myself so don't fret over not being able to reach them yourself.

Yes you can kill character ghosts. Another good thing to know is they can not go up and down stairs. So if they are too tough for you, beeline for the nearest stairwell.

Are your ghosts normally invis or not? In my current game, most likely to be my best ever, I found a ring of see invis on level 2. On level 3 I killed one of my the weakest incarantions of my character Rhiow that has existed as of yet. I also found an "amulet of faith" which seems nice.
Anyway, main thing that made me want to post... as a kid I was very very very allergic to bees, couldn't fit into my shoes from the swelling if i stepped on a single bee, etc. The fear of bees has carried on, I can't watch nature shows about bees without getting a little short of breath. Its completely ridiculous, but walking into a room with 8 killer bees and having to pull them into a hallway and spend a minute killing them evokes the same reaction for... uh, for no reasonable reason at all. |

Holy crap, I just found an entrance to the Lair for the first time on Dungeon Level 10, and two rooms away is the entrance to the Orc Mines. I just spent probably 20 minutes(felt like hours) clearing the level, avoiding a bunch of tiles near lair b/c its guarded by some plant that according to the wiki will corrode everything I'm wearing if I get unlucky.
I got my first god gift very shortly after my last post, the battles to clear level 10 were so long that i got three more god gifts in the process, including my first ever artifact: Quote:

I popped down to the first level of the orc mines to find a dozen orcs including a couple warriors and a wizard....oh, and Sigmund was just hanging out there in the middle of the mines too.

I should probably just learn to leave the orc mines alone instead of just diving down there as soon as I find it. I ran into a room with at least a dozen ogre, ogre-magi, and two-headed ogres..and that's just what I saw before I made a beeline in the other direction, leaving a trail of troll pee behind me...he died running up a blind stairway, and into a mob. I continually forgot that I could turn invisible, but I'm not sure it woulda saved me from the priest.

are the levels smaller in the Orcish Mines? Made it to Level 3 there and all the levels were much smaller than the regular dungeon-thankfully saw no worse than orc priests, wizards, warriors, and ogres.
Edit: well I can answer that myself somewhat went back to Orc Level 1, and noticed another staircase down which led to a different part of Level 2. with a ton of orcs waiting for me of course. Last edited by Thomkal : 07-27-2011 at 11:48 AM. |

Oof Sloppy that's just a nasty group of mobs to find yourself land amongst-especially if you had killed one of Duvessa/Dowan on top of that. And that Ogre room isn't much better.

Lighthouse, I wouldn't worry about how slow you play. Going slower and thinking about each move, especially in a crisis moment will likely save your life more than those of us who just push through each level.

I picked up my game from last night, very, very very slowly clearing the first 3 levels of the orcish mines. I really didn't run into much trouble, never really aggroing too much stuff away from the stairs. I am scared to venture down any further, so I decided to give the lair a try. Level 1 trivial, level 2 there were a couple things that could hurt but fairly easy... level 3 I ran into a hoard of "blink frogs" that are really messing me up.
I should have died twice. The first time I ran back to the stairs after taking a big hit, making it up with 11 HP with one mob following me. I was able to hit a heal potion and kill it and rest up. I decided to try again, popping downstairs for one turn then coming right back up. I pulled two frogs up with me and they put a serious hurting on me again. I killed one but the second one was going to finish me off. This time I get down to under 40 HP and realize I have nowhere to go but back down into certain death. I read a teleport scroll and take another huge hit, down to 6 HP. I look through my inventory and have no more heals, no blinks, the only thing with any sort of chance of saving me is a wand of polymorph other. I use it, the frog resists but misses me. I use it again, the frog turns into a naga. I've never seen one of those in this game, but they are slower than me, allowing me to run away until my teleport kicks in and I can rest up. I get the hell out of the lair and won't be going back any time soon. WHEW. level 11. 24,500 turns in. Still alive, even after typing that up I'm not quite sure how. |

Centaurs can be tough at range. I like to stay out of sight around a corner and let them come to me. Close up they are fairly easy.
That blink frog experience sounds very familiar. Blink frogs annoy the hell out of me. They always travel in packs, so if you see one, back away and hopefully you can get him without his friends.

That was tough there radii, being out in the open like that with centaurs. Like Lonnie said try to lure them into hand to hand range. I would have in that situation used one of my scrolls of teleportation to try to port somewhere safer, or at least closer to the centaurs themselves. Or maybe even use the wand of polymorph to morph them into something less dangerous (hopefully). But you are doing very well for someone with as little experience as you had before taking on this challenge.

RIP Timid VII - Such honor in taking on a Minotaur like that.
I found a labyrinth entrance, which I know troll beserkers should not attempt due to a high starvation chance, but high reward tempted me to enter anyway. I actually found the center rather quickly, but the Minotaur proved too tough. I should have beserked from the begining, by the time I did it was too late.

So I've found the entrance to the Hive-I take it I shouldn't go in without resist poison? Troutface2 is now level 12 and keeps getting slings and ammo from Trog-two slings of flame now, and a very nice sling of velocity. Found an artifact bow that gives resist poison, cold, and a couple other things I can't remember-have no skills in bow and really don't want Trog to start giving me bows and arrows, so not likely to use it.

Yeah I had fought more than a few centaurs before but this was the first time I ran into three, and something was slowing me, one of the arrows they were firing perhaps. Teleporting definitely seems right, and/or using the wands i had identified in the mean time. I was just convinced I could take all 3 easily if I could get to them. Quote:

I did the first two levels of the hive very very easily at level 11 with my artifact god gift club without any resist poison. but I could have had some lucky rolls on the level generation(s) for that to happen. |

I'm moving slowly, and I'm not dead yet, but here is where I currently stand.
It also looks like I don't have the release of 0.8.1, I may have to download the latest release and continue on with Ragnok, or wait until he dies. Code:

Just killed a Sky Beast on Level 8, decided to cut it up, and eat the meat.
Well, thankfully, my mutation was a good one. "You feel agile" was the message after eating it, and my Dex went up by 1. Was fearing something really bad was going to happen to me. |

decided to risk the Hive fought the first group of bees there, got poisoned, so decided to hold off on the Hive till I have resist poison. Found my first ice cave on that same level, decided to try it even without resist cold because I had a whip of flaming, two slings of flame, two wands of fire and a wand of flame. Defeated a blue devil easily from afar, then started to get attacked by a couple of ice statues. While I was trying to take them out, a pack of ice beasts made me move back to the portal entrance and then up the stairs, forgetting that I would lose the portal entrance if I did that. Just found my first ever efreeti flask-didn't even know they existed in the game. So Troutface2 ventures on in the main dungeon.

well this may be the end of Troutface2-I found an artifact steam dragon armor-which I think I can wear, defeated some orcs that were near it, got closer to it, and an eight-headed hydra popped up! Am going to try to polymorph it first, wish me luck!

Crap it was an armour mimic! I've had a mimic floating around the level, but haven't been able to kill it off yet. Used Brother in Arms to grab a two-headed ogre which actually did a lot of damage to the hydra after my polymorph wand didn't work on it, then was able to chase it off with my sling of flame-but I dont think I killed it. Crap!

Well I found the Orc Caves, and decided to go in. Had no trouble on the 1st level, grabbed a lot of gold, and had just a few fights. Decided this was easy, on to the next level...big mistake. Way to many creatures to fight, and Ragnok was killed.
I guess the next troll will be a little smarter than this one. Also going to update to the latest version before I begin with a new character. |

Never played Crawl before, but I have played many games of Nethack. Decided I would make seven attempts at getting the orb. Died of starvation twice including my best game which was on my sixth attempt.
The sixth game was fun and I wasted a ton of time on level 9 in a really big area where I found the lajatang of Zis Vya which went unidentified and unused in my inventory for the rest of the game. I also got my only gifts from Trog during that game, they all seemed rather useless. I didn't really care for the restrictions of the Troll Berserker.

Thanks for joining twothree, glad you had some fun with a new game to you. Yeah there are certainly restrictions with a Troll Barbarian, but its those restrictions that make it a easier class for people new to the game or with limited experience. Since I wanted to grab people who hadn't played Crawl before, I thought it was a good starting point for future comps if we have any. I would think the next comp would offer a species/background with a little more difficulty/strategy options.

Well with the latest version, my new Troll Berserker Oz, is doing pretty good.
Just made it to Level 7 of the dungeon, and came across another Sky Beast. Killed it, cut it up, and got 3 chunks out of him. Ate the first one, and now Oz can breath fire!!! How awesome is that? A troll that can breath fire...gotta love this game!! Hopefully I can get him further than my previous attempts. -Edit- Decided to eat another chunk of the Sky Beast, now I am stronger(+1 to Str). -Edit #2- Ate the last chunk of Sky Beast, now I am more agile(+1 to Dex). Not sure if I want to gamble with Oz any more than this. I think getting 3 good "mutations" was extremely lucky. Next Sky Beast goes to Trog with prayer. Heh Oz has been very very lucky with those mutations. The general thought is to try to avoid them when possible because there are some real nasty ones you can get. I certainly understand the attraction of trying them out though. Good luck with him!

Trog just granted me the first gift, a Scimitar of draining. Description- "A truly terrible weapon, it drains the life of those it strikes"
Should I use this or will the claws still do more damage? It's a "Long Blade" and better for the Dexterous in its description. I have a 10 for my Dex, so I'm not the most dexterous that's for sure. Last edited by ozias : 07-29-2011 at 04:32 PM. Reason: spelling |

I think I can beat the ones I'm fighting, but should I raise Str, Int, or Dex? I'm currently wielding the scimitar Trog granted to me, just to see how it does. |
