Absolutely, and the scary thing is, we are returning our OL, QB, RB's and a few WR's, but signed some major depth at WR and already day 1 in spring ball, the team is ahead of last season. I think this can be a scary offense.

Umm ... Switzer bashes Johnny Manziel, says ‘I’d never recruit a white quarterback’ | College Football Insider Blog

The Air Force Academy plans to cut a third of the sergeants who oversee military training and cadet discipline as part of an austerity plan that will carve 3 percent from its workforce and eliminate 10 academic majors at the school.

And yet no sports programs were eliminated (most saw minor reductions). They said that competition builds "character". Another sad sign that sports are more important than building academics and in this case, professional soldiers as well.

The advertising / marketing benefits alone almost certainly outweigh a 3% reduction in the athletic department salary budget.

Do you have any idea how many classes they have to miss before the receive this kind of punishment? I give all my students a set number of absences they can use how they see fit and then their are grade reductions after passing that limit. I would imagine these students had to miss a good chunk of the course to get this punishment.

Oddly enough, all four players are Georgia natives ... maybe they just got mixed up & thought they were playing in the SEC

Beasley and Crawford are GA natives.
Shaq Anthony is a SC product...and I can't remember where Peters is from.

Edit Peters is from Conyers...so 3 out of 4.

This particular instance involved the 4 skipping together and lieing to coaches about it.
2 of the 4 are honor roll students.

Swinney for his many misgivings has a pretty hard line on character issues and told all that lieing to the staff was worse than skipping.

Beasley in particular has all the talent in the world but is not "all in" mentally. He was the ring leader so to speak in this episode (they were in his car) so this is as much about ringing his bell as anything else. He has NFL talent but right now a middle school head on his shoulders.

A suspension for a single missed class, even with the lying is pretty harsh.

AJC had listed them as "all four", so I (foolishly) took their word for it.

Oddly, they listed the HS for 3 of the 4 in the same article (not shocking in the least to learn that 2 were Carver-Columbus products) but omitted the 4th. Maybe that should have tipped me off to something amiss.

Off hand I can't think of anyone that would have been a worse choice for the SEC Network. He might very well be the most despised (football) announcer in the Southeast.

Brent Musburger, Jesse Palmer to be lead announcing team for SEC Network - ESPN

Ugh. Only thing worse would have been if they brought Bobby Knight along with Musburger to do color for the football games.

Per week,or per season?

Meanwhile I'm guessing it'll be a number slightly smaller than the references he works in about Southern Cal?

I wonder if he realizes that A.J. McCarron graduated, so that means Katherine Webb won't be at all of Alabama games.

Rutgers and Washington announce home and homes for 2016 (Seattle) and 2017 (Jersey). We already have a series with WSU for 14/15.

UCLA series pushed back to 2021/22.

Also saw UCLA and A&M agreed to a home and home for 16/17.

Just saw this, really excited.

For those who don't know, nor likely care, I grew up a huge RU fan. My Dad went there and we lived about 30-45 minutes away. Grew up going to games my whole life. My sons Godfather worked for the program for a long time as well, so I have lots of ties to the school. I then headed west and got my degree from UW and fell in love with my Huskies. Should really be a lot of fun.

I without a doubt will be coming for the NJ game with my dad and will likely take you up on your offer.

I am already putting plans in my head to convince my wife to let me take my Dad out to Seattle for the game. Would be a great father and son trip.

New rule change:

Low hits on passers

Quote:
Add new paragraph b. (The current article becomes paragraph a.)
“When an offensive player is in a passing posture with one or both feet on the ground,
no defensive player rushing unabated shall hit him forcibly at the knee area or below.
The defensive player also may not initiate a roll or lunge and forcibly hit this opponent
in the knee area or below. [Exceptions. (1) It is not a foul if the offensive player is a
runner not in a passing posture, either inside or outside the tackle box. (2) It is not a foul
if the defender grabs or wraps this opponent in an attempt to make a conventional
tackle. (3) It is not a foul if the defender is not rushing unabated or is blocked or fouled
into this opponent.]”

Targeting
Quote:
1. Rules 9-1-3 and 9-1-4, Targeting Fouls (FR-87)
Removal of the yardage penalty upon overturn of the player disqualification
The following is added to the penalty statements of Rules 9-1-3 and 9-1-4 (FR-87):
“When the Instant Replay Official reverses the disqualification:
If the targeting foul is not accompanied by another personal foul, the 15-yard penalty for targeting is not enforced. If another personal foul is committed in conjunction with the targeting foul, the 15-yard penalty for that personal foul is enforced according to rule.”
EXAMPLES:
1. On a passing play, after the passer has released the ball, a defensive end launches and forcibly hits him apparently in the head/neck area. The referee throws a flag and announces that there is roughing the passer with targeting and the player is disqualified. After review by Instant Replay, the decision is that there was not forcible contact to the head/neck area. The referee then announces that the defensive player is not disqualified, and that the 15-yard penalty for roughing the passer is enforced.
2. A corner back launches at a receiver who has just caught a forward pass and
is still defenseless. The back judge rules a foul for targeting, and the corner
back is disqualified. There is no other personal foul in that action. If Instant
Replay overturns the disqualification, there is no 15-yard penalty.

To follow up on my earlier post and since there's no rule about me discussing scrimmages, I have a pretty exciting 3-4 weeks ahead of me.

Friday I get to work a Penn State Scrimmage, next weekend I will be at Notre Dame for two days working two of theirs, back at Penn State the weekend after that, and finish it off with working Pitt's final spring scrimmage of the year.

The targeting rule reversal is needed and understood. I worry about the unintended consequences of the low hit rule. I am imagining the rare but semi regular play where a DL slips or is blocks down and then scrambles to wrap up a QBs ankles...not sure how to interpret that in context.

We have no direction yet on this rule but I imagine it is similar to the instance of a roughing the punter/passer where if an offensive player blocks an opponent into the punter/passer it is not considered roughing. As for the slipping, there's going to be some judgement to determine whether it was an intentional act or not.

This portion of the rule indicates it would not be a foul if the defender is wrapping up the opponent. If he hits him with force, then you would expect the foul.

The MAC offered/pressured UMass into becoming a full (all-sports) member and UMass declined, so they'll be kicking us out in football after 2015. Sun Belt or the WAC looking for a football-only member?

I figured UMass would eventually end up leaving the A10 due to football, so they might as well head on to CUSA now and get it overwith. Follow the footsteps of the mighty Charlotte 49ers.

That won't happen. UMass doesn't want to leave the A10 for the MAC because of 1) travel costs/lack of regional rivals in non-revenue sports and 2) the A10 is a multi-bid basketball conference. CUSA isn't any better than the MAC in those regards. I see us angling for an all-sports bid to the AAC, but if we don't get one going to the Sun Belt (or possibly independent) for football-only while staying in the A10 for other sports.

Seems like the big east would be a nice fit. The basketball side is a nice fit with a presence in that market and the football side is weak enough that Umass could grow.

"The Big East" you're thinking of is the AAC now The "official" big east is the Catholic schools that broke away and don't play football, and wouldn't want anything to do with a state school.

Unfortunately the AAC already announced the addition of Tulsa, Tulane and East Carolina for 2014 (along with Navy for just football in 2015) to replace Rutgers and Louisville - I think we're better than those programs, but we probably need some success on the football field and in the stands before they'll take us. Our two paths to entry are probably either replacing UConn as the New England member if they get an ACC bid or coming in with Buffalo to bring it to 14, and splitting football into 2 divisions (UMass, UConn, Buffalo, Navy, Temple, with Cincy/Memphis or East Carolina/1 of the 2 Florida schools would be a nice group of 7).

Unless there's more to the story that doesn't seem like a permanent suspension kind of offense to me. God only knows how many students pass out in public in a given year.

Heh. That's basically what it takes to get arrested for alcohol violations on / near campus at a certain major university that's VERY near to me

And I'm purely amazed at how frequently that standard gets met.

Missouri is having a pretty spectacular offseason in both basketball and football. Am totally shocked that this hasn't been posted yet:

Missouri Tigers suspend Dorial Green-Beckham indefinitely - ESPN

Imagine this means he'll be out until Mizzou plays a game of consequence, in true SEC fashion.
