I hope it's 2020 and everyone is still typing their messages instead of their robot maids like Rosie taking dictations. Let's stay in the past and continue with the same stuff we've been doing for the past ten years...er....I mean traditions.

Consider me against the avatars. I know back when I would occasionally tool around the IHOF site, those damned helmets were a problem.
I use "day at the office" for a reason. Back when I had time to come here and browse, I cared that someone had to take a good look at what I was doing to see what kind of site I was looking at. We don't need distracting, boob bouncing, Pumpy or Izulde posing graphics mucking things up. Oh that and Ryan said "No" |

If the mods here really wanted to do this they would have talked with Markus and them over at the OOTP board to find out how much of a problem this really is. |

Didn't I answer this question already? My opinion hasn't changed, and I doubt it's ever going to. Even if you have them turned off, they're a modding headache that there's no reason to get into. There's virtually nothing to gain by adding them, and plenty of potential downside. Ryan said it well. Zero chance.

Because I'm sure it's coming, can we please all now spend the next 2 pages pissing and moaning about how unfair this is and how the board is awful because of it?

To play devil's advocate:
SD clearly ain't reading posts. Maybe there isn't anything to gain in his own eyes, but this thread was started basing the positives of avies. Clearly it wouldn't change, just saying that there could be positives from it, just because you don't think there are any that doesn't mean the entire universe of FOFC thinks exactly the way you do. Just sayin' |

Those aren't low brow humor examples, those are examples of the national media publishing stories about celebrities who have fallen off. Of course we talk about that. There's a difference. I don't see anyone posting pictures of baby shit or basically trolling the board. I wouldn't care if someone made a bald Britney Spears avatar.

Actually, people using inappropriate avatars would be quite beautiful. I could use it as a way to just skip over posts when reading through a thread or I could just add them to my ignore list.
This also addresses the moderator's concerns I heard. I respect our moderators for giving their own time to FOFC and do not want to create extra work for them. If that were to happen then it would outweigh any potential benefits of avatars. However, see my first paragraph above. I see no reason why the members of the community couldn't be our own avatar police by using our ignore lists or simply ignoring the asshats. Which brings up another potential feature - multiple profiles. It would be pretty neat if there were a way for us to use a different profile when at work vs. when at home say. I wouldn't want avatars turned on at work. Maybe using ip addresses or some such witchcraft. Quote:
This is the biggest roadblock I've seen presented so far. For the sake of argument if it were to double our bandwidth usage what would be the consequences? For that matter if Jim were to release FOF / TCY 2009 and we doubled our membership wouldn't those same consequences apply?

Personally I hate boards with crazy personalized avatars. I actually find some of the signatures on this board distracting. The less this board resembles other boards, the better - imo.

I don't hate anybody here at FOFC, but avatars would change that. I'd end up seeing some avatar that I really hated, and it would make me hate the person, too. I mean raging hate. I'm talking about the kind of hate that would make me lure that person over to my house with the promise of flowers and a nice dinner. The evening would start with a plate of various filled puff pastries, and it would end with a hatefuck.
Don't allow this to happen.

According to SkyDog, this board goes far over the bandwidth allowed by gamespy, but they let us continue to operate because of all of the visits that the board gets that they use to increases the revenue for ads. If we were to double the bandwidth used without also doubling the amount of visits the board gets, I wouldn't be surprised if gamespy shut us down. |

Use Adblock Plus. It destroys ads without using harmful chemicals.
