If they didn't at least top the Red Sox offer for Dice-K, they knew they had no chance.

Glad to see SI posting - between the Yuni signing and the KU debacle, I figured he'd be in some sort of drunken stupor.

Toronto lost a blind bid. It's not as if they knew and all indications are that they came very, bery close. I'm comfortable with their effort and unless you are Yankees, Red Sox or Marlins (ha) fan, we have more titles than you since 1993. Sucks, but the Blue Jays are (slowly) on the rise again. Rogers has deep pockets, It's not if it's when...and its a heavy price to pay when the precedent is that Japanese hurlers don't hack it. Also, if the guy decides he wants no part of Dallas...it's all for naught.
Toronto would've been the best locale for him culturally. But that's all water under the bridge now.

To be fair, with KU, it's just not that big of a deal. It's not in the tourney. Heck, it's not even in conference. We're not going to be great this year- the team's not deep and while we have talent, expectations are not nearly as high as year's past. Yuni... well, I was trying to figure out how to explain this frustration to a non-baseball fan and I'm just not able to verbalize it. In the end, is it a big deal? No- it's one year and not a ton of money. However, any money spent on a replacement level player like Yuni shows the Royals front office still has a fundamental misunderstanding of how to value players. SI

No way. Just because the Mariners have Ichiro and are owned by Nintendo? Toronto is a world class city befitting a half-Persian, half-Japanese baseball star. Though I guess the rumor perpetually was he only wanted to be on the west coast. I guess we'll see if he signs or goes back to Japan.

He won't be on a cultural island with the Rangers. They do have Yoshinori Tateyama and Koji Uehara on the roster, and Colby Lewis played a couple of years in Japan. Plus on the pitching front there is a guy in the front office by the name of Nolan Ryan.

It's become clear that the Reds are taking their shot now. Trading prospects for now. They've got a 2-3 year window and they're getting rid of their extra pieces to shore up where they're weak. |

Well they sense some weakness (obviously). With Latos and Marshall it looks like they can make a decent run.

Just a rough prognostication for the NL Central right now, but I'd put the Reds, Brewers and Cardinals at +-10 wins of 85. I know, really going out on a limb. But luck, injuries and all that stuff considered, 10 wins seems to be how teams can swing.
I'd put Pirates and Cubs at +-10 wins of 75 and the Astros at +-10 of 65. Since I'm a Brewer fan, my obnoxious fan prediction is Brewers 95 wins, Reds 85, Cardinals 75. Unless the Reds fans on here start getting obnoxious proclaiming themselves the clear frontrunners, then you can reverse the Reds and Cardinals. The FOFC Cardinals contingent are too agreeable for me to blindly hate them on here |

The Athletics will trade Gio Gonzalez to the Nationals in a deal that further depletes Oakland's pitching staff and adds to Washington's potentially dominant rotation. The deal sends four young players, including three of the Nationals' top ten prospects, to the Bay Area: right-handers A.J. Cole and Brad Peacock, left-hander Tom Milone and catcher Derek Norris. ESPN.com's Keith Law broke the news on Twitter.
Never been a Gio fan, very glad the Tigs refused to meet this price. |

No way Sox could have matched the Nats offer without completely gutting the system. Like, 4 of our top 7 prospects?

Beltran to the Cards for 2 years, $25 million.
Words cannot explain how ridiculous the San Francisco front office is for not getting that sort of deal done. EXACTLY the type of player needed, EXACTLY the type of deal desired. Holy hell. |

All in all, trading Pujols for Beltran and Wainwright doesn't seem half bad overall. Add in that it's only a 2-year deal for Carlos and it's a nice recovery for the Cards.

All you need to know about the Nats-A's deal is that Bowden loves it for the Nats.
Seriously - DO NOT TRADE WITH BILLY BEANE. Didn't they watch the movie?

I worry about Beltran's knees, but if we can get 140 games a year out of him this'll be a great deal. Overall I'm a happy Fonzie.

Im not sure what Mathenys sub plan will be, but with Craig, Jay, Berkman, Holliday and Beltran, I imagine 140 games may be the max he would get.
The Cards are looking at Coco Crisp also. Our OF will be strong this season. |

If we can get 140 games, 22 homers and 84 rbi's out of Beltran, it's a steal.

Gonzalez is the trivia answer to, probably, the worst trade Pat Gillick ever made as GM of the Phillies (Gonzalez & Gavin Floyd for six weeks of Freddie Garcia).
I still hate the White Sox over selling us that bag of balls. |

As a fan, it kind of pisses me off that the Pirates are sitting at 47M in payroll. They could easily afford to go up to a 85M payroll and pay market price for Fielder and Edwin Jackson. But they obviously won't, not that Prince would come anyways. It's just depressing.

Well, except for the fact that you want your utility player to be able to play defense? The real fear is that somehow he manages to "earn" the 2B job. I'm not irate over the deal, but I'm not jumping up for joy either.

Yeah, in a bit of a cathartic rant about him to a non-baseball fan, I mentioned the following:
"The goal is to play him as a backup at 2B, SS, and 3B. Two of the qualities these positions have in common is that the Royals have young players they need to evaulate slated to start at all three next year and Yuniesky Betancourt can field none of them well, or, more to the point- he actually plays them all poorly. " SI

I was initially in the WTF camp on Yuni, but Nick Bukaty put it in prespective: "In 2009, Yuni was on the team as the #3 or 4 player. In 2012, Yuni is on the team as the #25 player. Kinda says something about the 2012 Royals."

The Cards still have roughly $12M left to improve the team. I assuming another SP will be added. I am not sure if they will retain Jackson or make a run at signing someone like Paul Maholm. Roy Oswalt would be a good pickup, but that would probably take most of the $12M and we still need to add a decent 2B option.
