Was there anyone that saw Phil Fulmer's tenure as UT AD ending any other way?

Not if they'd paid any attention to the latter stages of his career. It's not called The Fulmer Cup without reason.

I remain convinced that Fulmer returned (pro-wrestling style) with a primary goal of sabotaging the program.

I'd recommend the next coach of UT ask for some money up front.

Tennessee is irrelevant in the modern landscape of college football, much like Nebraska, but both fan bases remain delusional. They dust off those old, fading VHS tapes of Peyton Manning and Tommie Frazier and wax nostalgic about the 20th century glory days.

It ain't coming back, folks.

They were handing out cash in McDonald's bags to recruits on visits!?!

You couldn't write a more fitting end to Fulmer's career.

Really? Couldn't Tennessee be Clemson or Oklahoma under the right coach? I think it's much harder for Nebraska, and it probably won't happen with Tennessee, but a lot of college football teams are one coach and two recruiting classes away from being relevant.

I wouldn't even say it's unlikely. With the classes they're still able to land while sucking, they'll eventually hire the right coach by accident and become relevant again.

I suppose it’s possible, if Tennessee transferred to the ACC. I don’t see it happening in the SEC, especially with Alabama as their permanent cross division opponent. As for Nebraska, they left the Big XII because they were tired of being dominated by Texas and Oklahoma. Now, they’re a bottom feeder in the Big Ten. Perhaps Conference USA would be a better fit for them.

On the athletic side, Nebraska left the Big 12 due to the unequal distribution of TV money. The Big Ten provided a larger payout and an equal share. I'm sure research grant money on the academic side was also a huge factor in the switch.

I'm sure we're supposed to believe that the close personal relationship they had with their position coaches is a major factor in that.

A more cynical sort miiiiight wonder if it's because they know the checks aren't going to keep coming.

I don't even think that is even cynical. I am not going to work if the checks aren't coming either. Especially when I know that other places pay better.

To slightly play Devil's Advocate to Jon, with the NCAA basically allowing free transfers and UT not having a head coach on January 21st, why wouldn't every player just enter the portal and keep their options open? You can always "decide your heart was always at UT" and still go back there.

I can't help but wonder how many people realize that the new AD in Knoxville is the same village idiot that had a national championship banner hung for UCF a few years ago.

edit to add: I know people HERE will connect that, I mean the UT fan base

I dont know. That may set you up for unrealistic expectations. They will have a new QB.

I don't see this working out for Tennessee. Heupel was a great college player and competitor, but his coaching track record isn't anything special. He was fired by Bob Stoops in 2015 as Offensive Coordinator at Oklahoma. His record at UCF is decent, but UCF has declined since Heupel took over the head coaching reins from Scott Frost. I'd say in two or three years, Tennessee will be moving on to the next slot in their never ending revolving door of head coaches.

On the opening game thought, Iowa hosts Indiana in its first game. Iowa used to use the early game s a sort of preseason. Obviously we cannot do that anymore. I wonder if KF adapts.

I tend to agree.

I suspect the notion (beyond this being the obvious choice when you say you hired the AD because of the people he'd hired) might be that he can get Drew Lock performance out of Bailey/whatever QB is left on the roster. (Remember, he was Mizzou OC for a couple years in between the other jobs)

I figure that's the absolute ceiling for him though.

I'm not sure if it is just my age or where I was in that stage of life, but that era of football just seemed so much more enjoyable to me. Maybe because it seemed like there were more top tier programs and star players and coaches at that time.

It's kind of funny how this has broken the big sports' websites formats for covering college football. ESPN isn't even trying - if you go to the 1-AA "Scores" in the college football section, you get all of the cancelled games from September, and the date drop-down only goes through the originally scheduled season. Yahoo Sports considers this "week 23" of the college football season.

The scores were on their page while the games were being played. That's why my eyes were able to roll at both Jackson State steamrolling an NAIA team AND at NM State getting steamrolled by a first-year FCS team.

Took some figuring out but I found them

When you get to the Scores menu, select 2021, then in the Conferences menu select FCS(I-AA), then in the Weeks menu, the Spring Week 1, Week 2, etc options appear.

And that's how I now know that Nicholls beat Lincoln (MO) 87-3 last Friday

I was reading a little little bit about the spring season, and unless I'm understanding this wrong, the champion of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference gets one of 11 automatic bids to the 1-AA playoffs. There are 3 teams in that conference playing in the spring, and one is ineligible for the playoffs because of sanctions. That just leaves Delaware State or South Carolina State.

And then I saw Idaho Vandal tickets are on sale, limited capacity. My girlfriend belongs to a Vandal family, and that would be just fantastic to drive up there and see a game, but I don't think I could talk any of them into doing it as soon as March. The last sporting event I went to was a Celtics game in Denver in November 2019, I wonder when the next one will be.

Clemson Tigers' Justin Foster retires from football, citing issues with asthma, COVID-19

I don't really have any commentary on the effects of that Covid for him other than I hope he will be healthy moving forward. I was just wondering about the "retirement" announcement from college sports. I don't remember anyone doing that.

Definitely not sketchy, either. Who gives up a football scholarship and the medical treatment while still recovering?
