He was terrible in Denver. Like Kiffin - a jerk personality without the success to make people look the other way on him as a person. To his credit, he agreed and basically was one of those young hires that didn't work out because he wasn't mature enough.

Happy with McDaniels for the Raiders. Likely a boom / bust hire but I wanted an offensive coach and it's at least good to be back to respectability where we can hire desirable coaches.

The quote was "I'm not going to be the person to take Jim Harbaugh from the University of Michigan. I hope he stays there." Easy enough for Ross to say that Harbaugh told Miami that he was leaving Michigan for the NFL. At that point, Ross' reason for not pursuing him went away. |

I haven't been able to find it here, but I know at one point years ago, I used Jim Harbaugh (coming off a hot streak with the 49ers) as my case example for "why don't NFL teams pay their coaches a lot more?"
Theory being that the enterprise is worth a billion plus, and you're constrained by the salary cap in how much you can spend in those areas... so paying what it takes for a top-tier coach seems like a no-brainer at an incremental cost of, maybe, $5m more per year? Anyway... at the time, I recall saying "Jim Harbaugh seems like the guy who could just name his price." And now as a Dolphins fan... hmmmm... |

I am not saying that he does not have an out. In fact I am fully prepared for Ross to come out with some semblance of "Well technically,..." when he does introduce Harbaugh. What I am saying is in the same way it was unnecessary when Saban did it, the lie that Ross told was unnecessary. We all knew that Harbaugh was option one. There was no need to exclude him and only him from the coaching search. Who was he trying to fool? Just raises questions about the whole process.

I've had similar thoughts. Unless we're all missing huge expense centers, these enterprises must throw off cash at an alarming rate. Why wouldn't you spend it on the best coaches, assistants, specialists, equipment, facilities, etc...? It's interesting to note that the top European football clubs, who are decidedly not constrained by salary caps, are increasingly doing this. The past 10 years or so you've seen clubs spin up whole data analysis groups, vastly expand their sports medicine organizations (including extremely sophisticated catering setups), build and move into luxurious, state-of-the-art training facilties. And in the grand scheme of things, it's all peanuts. For instance, last year Liverpool moved into a brand new, state-of-the-art training facility. It cost them 50M pounds. That's roughly the cost of paying Van Dijk, Thiago Alacantra, Mo Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold, & Roberto Firmino for a year. Or roughly what it cost them (with performance-related addons) to sign Luis Diaz last week, who will likely start as a backup. Or what they'll make if they make the QF of the Champions' League (depending on how many wins they had in the Group Stage). |

American sports owners have been remarkably successful in convincing each other not to escalate costs too dramatically so that all of them can make more money.

For example, I know a reportedly rather bright fellow in the greater Baltimore area who would surely be willing to offer what he has to the Ravens' analytics and financial side for something like half a million or so. They'd be foolish not do take him up on it.

And prior to his reported bonus date too.
He should have waited because this really does just come off as "you stole my thunder!" Who believes he spent 2 days honestly debating whether to retire? He and his team spent longer writing all of his PR messages and coordinating the choreographed PR tour he's about to undertake.

The bonus was never a thing. He's getting that money regardless, it's the deferred portion of his signing bonus from his last contract. He is, separately, by contract, required to pay back some of his bonus for not playing next year - that's between him and the Bucs how they work that out.
The idea that $15 million changes hands or doesn't change hands based on retiring a day or two later or earlier was ridiculous. Last edited by molson : 02-01-2022 at 10:25 AM. |

So can the Bucs just hand Brady 15million now without it counting against the salary cap?

On the Dan Patrick show yesterday, one of the guests said that Brady owes the Buccs $16 million for retiring before the end of his contract and the Buccs owe him $15 million on 2/4. In the end, none of it matters. They'll work it out.
I agree with molson. The idea was stupid. People just wanted to make Brady look greedy.

If it was deferred payment of the signing bonus, then that does not matter for cap purposes. The Bucs were on the cap hook for it when they gave it to him (pro-rated over the life of the contract). There is no way that the owners would allow wink & nod agreements like that to fall outside of the cap. The whole reason they have a cap is to limit their payroll costs. |

Flores suing the NFL, Giants, Dolphins etc for racism. Alleges Ross tried to pay him outside the salary cap to lose games his first year and illegally set up meetings with presumably Deshaun Watson. Last edited by BishopMVP : 02-01-2022 at 04:07 PM. |

Holy shit. I mean if Ross really did offer his coach $100,000 per loss--and if there is proof of that--then the NFL has problems beyond the owners being all racist.
That's Pete Rose level shit right there. Last edited by albionmoonlight : 02-01-2022 at 04:13 PM. |

I hope Belichick is just out here playing chess if it hurts the Dolphins, the Bills (indirectly - but presumably they'll get dragged in & asked what they knew from Daboll), and Flores comes back to New England as DC & HC in waiting. Just need to get that muppet Steve out of the way.

According to my Michigan friend (he's otherwise an ok guy), Harbaugh has a preliminary agreement with Minnesota and tomorrow they finalize it. No idea which Michigan site he pulled this from but I think he pays for every single one of them.
I was really wanting to see Harbaugh in Ohio Stadium in 2022 so I'm disappointed. |

The tanking thing is pretty interesting. People in sports media openly talk about teams tanking games for draft position. And the leagues obviously encourage and reward that by offering these great prizes if you lose enough. So what's the legal and ethical line there? You can try to lose, but you can't offer organizational rewards for it? Or does anything go?

I don't think he was getting one anyway based on the information that was leaked about him by the Dolphins organization.

I said it elsewhere - it seems like his best chance after this play are back in New England (though Steve is a complication there), or Nick Saban's School for Coaches Who Don't Do PR Good (due to the BB/Saban connection). On balance I don't think Belichick would care he leaked text messages considering he tried to destroy multiple organizations and didn't make a single allegation regarding his time in New England. Still seems odd for a younger coach to do.

It certainly seems like he knew what he was doing, so I expect he had to feel like he wasn't getting back into the NF in the short term. This is the league that blackballed Kaepernick, so I expect he's done unless Belichick grabs him to purposely say FU to Goodell.

I will say, I'm a little disappointed they didn't follow the Boras/ARod playbook and drop this suit on the Friday before the SB to cause maximum PR carnage for the NFL.
