Glory?? You mean the movie about the 54th—the number that’s in my signature??? (And yes, I realize there’s some duplicity of the meaning of the word there…) The movie about history that’s heavily based on—and has all of its narration as—letters to Col. Shaw’s mother???? (and father)

You mean the movie where a rookie Colonel leads a group of mostly ex-slaves, and in perhaps its most poignant and memorable scene has his hand forced to have one of his men flogged in front of the battalion?

You mean the one where later on that same soldier has a character-arch-defining one-on-one conversation with the Colonel and they discuss how "ain’t nobody clean" and the officer asks the soldier how it can be redeemed??? (“We ante up and kick in.”)

Apart from the clues, do you mean the movie where all of the climactic scenes take place in the area where I lived for nearly half of my time at FOFC??? (And also where both of my children were born, where the daughter in question lived over half her life, where my wife’s ancestors held slaves, and where my ancestors were brought into this country as slaves.) I wouldn’t expect everyone on this board to know the parenthetical part I dropped right there, but I know that some know most/all of it. Honestly, I was worried that one person who has guessed multiple times in this thread might guess Glory almost immediately without the clues, because he is aware that his wife and my wife both come from the same family lineage that owned numerous slaves in the Lowcountry.

Nope, you’re the first one to guess Glory.

The 54 reference was the most unsure one of the whole thing for me. Whenever I hear or read a number, I automatically associate it with moments, movies, etc. Given the mathematical nature of the text sim community, I wondered if someone else might do likewise. I'm incapable of hearing/reading the number 54 and not immediately jumping to one or more of Glory/Jerry Maguire/playing cards/Fulton Kuykendall.

Was "flick" a clue? I was overthinking that one for a long time and thinking about A Christmas Story, which makes no sense otherwise.

It wasn't. I try to avoid using the same word in close proximity to itself when writing/posting.

(It's been the quote in my signature here for at least a decade, and quite possibly the entire time since the move to vBulletin in 2003ish.)

I was going to guess Glory yesterday but I hadn't seen it since I was around 12 so couldn't remember the details.

But I'm impressed Swaggs went from Porky's to Glory.

She took an early interest in history, devouring the series whose name escapes me now where they insert kids into historical moments and tell the story from their perspective, in first or second grade. To this day she generally loathes fantasy/sci-fi books/movies. No interest in LOTR, Narnia, Harry Potter, etc. But she has already watched Glory a second time. I don’t even know how many times she has seen Hidden Figures. I’m pretty sure that was her first non-animated/“grown-up“ movie. She first saw it in the theater with a group of moms and daughters from her school, and we bought it as soon as it was available on Amazon.

Magic Treehouse

She's probably a bit too old for the I Survived and the Nathan Hale's Hazardous Tales books, but those are also good for kids more into history than fiction.

1. Denzel’s first Oscar and his breakout moment.
2. Also stars Morgan Freeman.
3. Tried hard—especially for the 80s and given the nature of the true story—to avoid the white savior narrative. (I mean, the true story is "wealthy white kid makes unpopular decision to arm and lead black soldiers in the Civil War, risking his life to do so, fighting racism within his own ranks to make sure they get to fight," and the movie managed to make the four main-character enlisted black soldiers as relatable/likeable/heroic as their Colonel.)
4. Probably because the movie came out when they were in high school/college and was told from a Union perspective and that of the ex-slaves, it was the movie that caused a number of my deep Southern white friends – including, though I hadn’t met her yet, my wife - to first question all they’d been taught up to then about slavery, the Civil War, etc. I mean, Gone With The Wind was the defining movie of the Civil War for them up to that point.

I suspect you’d really like it.

It was “I Survived,” Albion. I looked that one up and recognize the pictures on some of the covers. It was a little unsettling to see that our 7/8-year-old had checked out “I survived the Nazi invasion” from the school library.

I lived in DC when Glory came out. We went on a field trip to go see it, 8th grade. I think I've seen it since then but I don't remember.

I think it was one of those late-night Skinemax specials, like Emmanuelle Part VI with Sylia Krystel.

Stan - Eminem
  • takes his brother to a concert the way your brother took you to a movie
  • Stan alleges that Eminem lied to Stan and his brother, while you and your brother lied to your mother
  • Stan wrote several letters to Eminem without a reply
  • perhaps hints of legalism in Stan's reliance on society to function as it should (ie. Eminem should write back) to stay grounded and in adherence to the law; a breakdown in society's rules leads to Stan committing criminal offences
  • duplicity references Eminem essentially rapping both the Stan and Eminem lines, or the fact that Stan is a mirror image of Eminem including the tattoo of Slim Shady across Stan's chest
  • duplicity could also be a reference to Eminem's actions, saying that he would write back to just to get Stan and his brother to leave him alone at the concert
  • MTV censored the original video, thus the reference to the R Rating
  • the rookie creator reference is a call back to the "drank a fifth of vodka, dare me to drive" line, which itself is a reference to Eminem's first big single "My Name Is" (ie. rookie debut/creator)
  • signature moment is a reference to the song being performed by Eminem and Elton John at the 2001 Grammy's, a signature moment for the Grammy's and both artists

Can't figure out the last clue or two.
