I miss the 3-3-5. What a great idea for the B1G.

Yep. Defense just couldn't get stops (or get a call on anything that was close). Sudfeld got the offense going, but without stops, hard to come back. Very disappointing and frustrating loss. |

I like Amir Carlisle a lot. "Speed" back, but he runs downhill and hits the hole immediately. No dancing behind the line and trying to avoid getting hit.

So I'm no expert, but should a school like Texas which basically mints money in college football be losing games to BYU?

Yeah. As much flack as the idea of a 3-3-5 got, it was really just horrible fundamentals that would have exposed those players in any alignment. I feel like Gary Patterson could field a 3-3-5 and succeed in the B1G.

College Football is a strange beast. Texas was up 14-10 over BYU, got a 3 and out, but got a roughing the punter call and since then BYU has scored 17 unanswered, and Texas has once again forgotten how to tackle.

The BYU QB is 4-18, 62 yards, 0 TD and 1 INT. And BYU racked up over 400 total yards in the first half. That same QB rushed for 166 yards on 12 carries with 2 TD's. Insanity. |

I swear Michigans offense is 2 guys. When does ND adjust? Or is there an adjustment to make?

He's been doing those double backs into traffic all night, was only a matter of time before he fumbled or took a massive loss. If he wants to be a pro style QB, just take the sack.

Now learn from it, get out there and play.
Better to make a mistake like that up by two TD's early in the season... |

It will be interesting to see when three of Michigan's best offensive players return or not after that last series.

Montana State from the FCS blows a 30-19 fourth quarter lead to SMU and loses 31-30 on a touchdown in the final 12 seconds.

Nice!
It's always good to beat Notre Dame and especially sweet to beat them tonight.

Well, quite the interesting night of football. The Golden Domers and Texas can both forget about title runs. A QB who is 9-26 will be a star by tomorrow morning. Paul Richardson of CU had a second 10+ catch, 200+ yard day in succession. (against terrible competition, but that's still a lot of yards and TD's in two games) Baylor and Texas Tech is going to be must watch TV later in the year.
One other thing. . . For years now I have heard how players just can't help themselves, they can't turn away from hits to the head at the last minute. Even if they could stop it, the quality of the game would be ruined. Well, with the suspensions in play, I watched football all day and didn't see a hit to the head. I didn't see a defenseless WR take a shot the head or chest with the crown of a helmet. I didn't see 8 players being carted off on stretchers holding their heads. And in my opinion, the level of play was good. I enjoyed all the games. Maybe that will change next week, but I kind of doubt it. |

Texas hasn't been the same since they lost the title game. Despite what talent they bring in, they still under achieve.

Right, for those of you who are diehards, how does Mack Brown get a free pass? I thought Texas was as football crazy as the SEC territory - how aren't there people calling for his head after the disaster seasons they have had repeatedly especially given the resources? Or do they just get less attention, despite being "Texas"? |

Hats off to BYU. They took Texas to the woodshed. The defense was simply atrocious. Since Manny Diaz has come in, they simply have forgotten how to tackle.

They've gone 5-7, 8-5 and 9-4 since the BCS game. Not sure how you can say those are repeated disaster seasons. Yes, they aren't up to the standard set during the previous decade, but far from disasters (except for the 5-7 season). He's been to two BCS title games, winning one, and has won two other BCS games. If they aren't in contention for the Big 12 title (and based on how the defense played tonight, that isn't looking likely), then the hot seat gets cranked up.

Sorry, I meant by Texas standards - ie, aren't they judged on the same scale as an Alabama or an LSU or a USC? If not, mea culpa - its actual intellectual curiousity for me. Last edited by Crapshoot : 09-07-2013 at 11:17 PM. |

They are. And a lot of emphasis was put on this season. If they don't turn it around then he might be gone after this season. But he's earned the chance to try it his way, considering how much success he's had since coming to Texas.

After week two, I think it's safe to assume that the Big Twelve won't be a factor in the National Championship this year.

Michigan's band played "The Chicken Dance" after the game in reference to Hoke saying the Irish were chickening out of the series.

One word to describe the USC offense:
Pitiful Disgrace Comical Seriously? KiffinLOL Wow I don't know how any USC fan could defend Kiffin at this point. This is a joke. I thought they looked awful in game one, but understood they might need time to gel. This? I'm not a USC fan at all, but this doesn't even give me a lot of joy. This is just painful to watch. |

Isn't USC done with their NCAA penalties after this year? Seems like a perfect time to bring in a new coach knowing it might take a couple years to restock the talent pool.

And I'm not sure how clear/unclear what I meant was at this point ... unless you remember that I consider the 2008 version of Crompton the single worst college quarterback I've ever seen (yes, that includes Reggie f'n Ball ... he was demoted to most maddening after Crompton claimed the worst ever title). But by 2009, someone Kiffin magically transformed him into at least a reasonable facsimile of an actual QB. I despise the sumbitch, but that's about as much of a coaching miracle as I can recall. If he could do it with him but not with Wittek then, well, damn that guy must suck.

As an outsider, maybe the intensity goes more towards HS football than college in that state? And, fwiw, all 3 of the programs you list have had a terrible stretch in the past 20 years. Great programs will always rebound, and usually do so faster than others, but every team has its down years.

Watch a UMass game. Please. I'm actually curious how you would describe the level of ineptitude at this point - our best quarterback was the 3rd best quarterback on his HS team. A Massachusetts HS team that finished 4-6.
