We got a bunch of rain the last week. Wednesday we got a couple inches. Then about 5 or 6 this weekend.
The Meramec river which flows right by our town is expected to crest Wednesday within a foot of 2015s record crest. And it is supposed to rain again Wednesday. This means my town will be under water. Again.

Water is going down. Another smaller crest Saturday as we got 3 more inches of rain or will by the end of tonight.
People were pretty well prepared. We went through this 14 months ago. It didnt affect me. We live on a hill above the river. But the town was devastated again. Im not sure why the people live there. We were under a boil water order for about 12 hours, but that has been lifted. Schools have been closed all week. But I think those might be open tomorrow. We have gotten more rain in the last 8 days than we normally get for the entire month of April and May combined.

Here is a video from 2 days ago. This was before the crest, which was just below the record set 14 months ago.

Thanks.
Yeah its not good. And I think FEMA gave the people an option to raise their houses (Stilts or build a hill) or be left out of any federal funds the next time it happened. The houses under water, the people are out of luck. Have to rely on insurance, I guess.

There's a lot of crazy weather going on the U.S. right now. For us in Idaho - it's hot and smokey air. Pretty unpleasant to be outside and all outdoor school activities have been cancelled. But it could be worse. We're pushing towards a 200 air quality index, 300-500 is considered "hazardous", and Seeley Lake near Missoula hit 697.

Apparently, the residents of Erie, PA all wanted snow for Christmas. They got their wish. About 33 inches on Christmas, another 19 this morning. And here in Myrtle Beach, we're "worried" about getting a little ice the next few days...

According to one of our local weather guys, it was nearly 100 degrees warmer (50F+) in Myrtle Beach than it was on the northern plains today (wind chills of -30 to -50) Crazy!

Strangely enough, 3 weeks ago we had the biggest snowfall (barely 10 inches) in about a decade. It lasted just a day or two, things were back to 'global warming normal' within 72 hours.

Looks like we may get a whole inch of snow/ice tomorrow. Naturally the state is already closed down for it. North of us may get quite a bit more,so you all be careful tomorrow

Getting tons of pics from the Charleston area of snow. That's a HUGE deal down there. They've only had measurable snow twice in something like 27 years. (We had a storm 7 years ago when I lived there, and I was told then that it was the first time in 20 years.)

Well, and it's not just "people." Because it's so rare, there's no justification for the local/state governments to spend much money on equipment to handle it. Particularly when you get way down in the Lowcountry like that, you just wait for it to melt.

Dola...looks like the "20 years" was correct. Per the NWS Charleston, these are the top 10 single-day snowfalls recorded at Charleston Airport.

It seems in Charlotte we'll somehow slip through the middle of this and avoid both any snow/ice from the storm and the massively cold air the middle of the country will be experiencing. (Though I do feel like a hardo telling people down here that a high of 20 isn't that bad )

Still clinging to ice here in MB, should switch over soon-snowing in the rest of the state.

Just went out to check on the weather and mail-very icy, not much snow yet. Mailbox and paper box have icicles on it, and the mail box is frozen shut. So no mail today Our local weather guy just updated snow totals to 3-5 inches though

Oh, the other thing that's interesting--and I'd forgotten about this, having moved away and being a family that did travel to the mountains frequently even when we lived in the Charleston area--is that people who've lived there all their lives and don't travel often don't *own* any winter clothes. (My recollection of winters there is that it only got below freezing maybe once or twice per winter, and extremely rarely below 25ish.) Some social media posts are out there teaching people how to craft makeshift "gloves" for their kids out of socks and ziploc bags.

How does it work when you guys get thumped by lake effect snow in the winter? Does it hang around for weeks at a time? Or does the weather get better and you get a whole bunch of flooding?
Here we'll get a big dump of snow this time of year and it can be gone in a couple of days when a chinook rolls through. It's not unsual to have temps in the -20's (- teens F) and high teens (60's F) in the same day. 3 hours north they don't get chinooks so what snow they get they keep till spring. |

Our combined forecast from NWS, Weather.com and our local website is 60% chance of 2"-14" of snow.

Earlier in the winter snow tends to stick around and end up in the partially melting/re-freezing cycle that sucks. Usually this late most stuff has melted and you get some flooding, but it's usually a gradual enough process and there's enough wetlands/drainage it's not a huge problem. The bad flooding for a few of these winter storms have come from storm surges that happen at high tide or when the angles of winds is just right to push a lot of water into Massachusetts Bay, or wherever. (NYC/Staten Island had that notably bad storm surge a couple years back during an August hurricane, though I don't recall any particular incident in the winter there.) You can see some of the flooding here in Boston (in a district that's only been recently built up since, you know, it's prone to flooding, but hey, $$$ - let's put the proposed Amazon HQ there too!) Seaport flooding , and down on the south shore here - South Shore flooding Last edited by BishopMVP : 03-21-2018 at 12:13 AM. |

Saw the pictures of the flooding going on around Baltimore right now. My heart goes out to anyone here affected by it.
Meanwhile here in Myrtle Beach we are starting to feel the effects of Alberto. Not going to be anywhere close to its path, but we are still going to get a lot of rain from it. Under a flood watch already for tomorrow-could get 2' or more. Good luck to those more in his path.

The area being hit hardest was just overrun with a massive flood two summers ago. It's unbelievable. And not a low-lying area, not the sort of terrain that a lay person would look at and say "well, you totally had it coming, living here." The effort to bail out of round one in 2016 was massive, and now... wow. |

I live next door to Elliott City in Catonsville, and this flooding was mostly local to Baltimore and the rocky passage of downtown historical EC, not the rest to the city.

Well, this weekend sucked. Friday, Lexington (and more specifically, Woodford County) got hit pretty hard with storms that knocked out our power. We were out of town and found out from our neighbor that our fence was mostly leveled and we lost two large trees in the back. No house damage. Came home Saturday afternoon to assess the damage and get the fence and trees cleared away, and to empty our refrigerators.
Still without power today. Luckily it hasn't been hot but the house is warm and incredibly muggy. Happy to have a cool basement to sleep in though. Hopefully the power will be on by end of day tomorrow.
