Ugh. My mom went to the ER last night after a couple days of being unable to keep literally anything down. She totally didn't want to go in the first place, of course. They gave her a couple IV's, and basically cut her loose (I'm fairly certain she refused to be admitted.)
And, as expected, she kept on throwing up about the second she got home and most of today, refusing to go back to the hospital. I wound up having to stop over and basically threaten her (basically said either she was getting in the car and going, or I was calling an amublance), since my dad apparently couldn't talk her into going. Guess now we see if my dad can actually insist she gets admitted this time, or I have to go over there and barricade her in the place. Fun times. So there's this tiny little spider in the corner of my bathroom, next to the sink. Body can't be more a pinhead big, if that. Sometimes when I wash my hands he scurries around his web and I talk to him to try and calm him down. Tonight I thought about trying to put him in a jar or something but then it occurred to me that I have no idea what something that small might eat. How does it sustain itself? The only thing I can think of it eating are the tiniest of gnats.

Just talked to her this morning, she's supposed to be seeing a gastro specialist any time now. Still haven't figured out the actual *cause*. Ruled out a few things, but it'd be nice to know wtf the problem is.
At least they had a TV in her room, so she could watch the Cubs game. |

My daughter is playing with her second cousins in the ocean, but I don't feel like I can take a picture, because my wife's 25 year old female cousin is also playing with them, and it would just seem creepy.

For those interested - Mom's out of the hospital after a couple of days. She sounds / looks a lot better, has been able to keep a variety of food down just fine.
The generic, catch all, "we think it is/was a viral injfection". They couldn't otherwise find anything wrong, but so far, so good. |

Autoslash is the greatest thing ever for car rentals. You book a car and their bot runs and continuously auto-rebooks you when they find a lower rate. My rate for a car in New England over Thanksgiving is just dropping and dropping to the point where it's about 40% below anything I could get on orbitz/kayak/the car rental sites directly, ect.

Interesting and hadn't heard of this yet. Wish I either knew about it/that it existed before I got a car but good to know anyway. How wide of an area could it rebook you for? Say you made your reservation for a non-airport location in Boston. Could you end up outside the city or at the airport, albeit at a cheaper rate? |

It won't change your pick-up location, and I don't even think it changes your car company. It's not like priceline or hotwire where you they book you wherever is cheapest. You book a specific car company and location through them, just like orbitz or travelocity. Then they automatically re-book you on the same itinerary when their bot finds a lower rate. I've gotten 3-5 notification emails for re-books on the same itinerary, same rental company, on the two cars I've booked through them. There's no extra charge, you can cancel the rental if you need to, and you don't have to pay for the rental in advance. And they give you a confirmation number for the actual car rental company, so you can confirm that it went through on the actual car rental website system (if you're like me and check all this shit multiple times before you take a trip). We had friends who did. It was insane. He got shots like 3 times a day. They had to hire a pet sitter to come in duing the day to do it. Pets are great and all, but that's far beyond where I'd be willing to go.

We just had one diagnosed. Her blood sugar was 426, typical feline blood sugar is in the 170 range. She was hefty, 17.8lbs on her last vet visit about 6 months ago. Over the past two months she dropped to 13.4lbs. Originally thought it was hyperthyroidism. We'll learn today how often insulin will be needed and how her diet will change.
Ought to be fun with two other cats in the house.

Not a cat, but my girlfriends family dog (poodle) is a diabetic. Outside of the cost of needles and insulin (not sure how much they spend) it really isn't too much work. Once you have given the shot enough times it is a very quick and easy process. They feed their dog twice a day and also have to give shots twice a day so they just give him his dose before each meal in the morning and evening.
He is 12 years old and he is almost completely blind and his teeth are pretty bad. But the vet says his heart is very healthy and everything else is good. So not bad for a diabetic dog to live this long so far. He has been a diagnosed diabetic for at least 5 years, probably closer to 10. Last edited by Scoobz0202 : 10-16-2015 at 12:17 PM. |

Far too much :/ We gone the traditional needle route, we've used the click-pen route. The cat in question, who is a very bitey/scratchy/tempermental critter, adjusted almost immediately & actually seemed to be non-plussed by the whole affair within a matter of a week or two. One bit of advice I'd offer is to discuss options in both type of insulin & delivery method with your vet. After the best option pens were discontinued maybe 2 years back & costs started to skyrocket we ended up directed to Walmart where we buy basically human supplies that the vet deemed perfectly compatible. The price difference can be hundreds of dollars vs animal-specific drugs & equipment.

States go after unclaimed property, use it to patch budgets - Yahoo News
This is a serious problem. I have a business account for tax purposes. I use it exclusively for certain types of company-specific expenses, which I haven't had in years. I probably keep too much money in there, but I wanted to mostly leave it alone when I set it up because you can't use online banking with this type of business account. A few months ago, I received a cryptic note from my bank. It turns out Michigan wanted my business account declared abandoned and the money turned over to the state. I had to scramble a bit to ensure that didn't happen. And I haven't moved in eight years, so it's not like I'm hard to find. I have to register my business with the state every year. |

Yes. And after a lot of research, I changed vets. But not cats. Feline diabetes is not like human diabetes, which is usually permanent. Vets love the idea of being the source of frequent checkups and insulin supplies. Often, they're right. But often, it's just a scam - and you need to figure this out on your own. Most cat food is extremely high in carbs. But cats cannot digest carbs properly. They are carnivores. The best diet for a cat is raw meat. It's not practical, though. So the first thing you should do with a diabetes diagnosis is look at what you're feeding your cat. Unfortunately, pet foods are not labelled like our foods. But if you look up web sites for dealing with pet diabetes, often they have a list of foods with an analysis of carb and protein content. You need to be feeding your cat something with high protein. For wet food, Fancy Feast is really good, despite the reputation. For dry food, which is usually higher in carbs, Innova Evo stands out. Science Diet and most of the other crap vets are paid to recommend are truly horrible for cats in particular. The second thing is go to the drug store and get a diabetes testing kit. Test strips, little testing tacks and a monitor. Cats don't really feel it, so if you have patience and a calm hand, you can test their blood by pricking their outer ears. Good blood flow and not much risk of hurting them. I asked my vet about this, and was told that if I dared test her blood on my own, they wouldn't let us come back. I'm glad I said goodbye at that point. You need to monitor this every day, because high blood sugar will cause damage in time. When we had our cat diagnosed, her blood sugar was in the 600s. I changed her food immediately, threw away the Science Diet, tested every day, and her blood sugar was around 100 within two weeks - and stayed there. She lived another six years, until she was almost 20, and what she died of probably had nothing to do with blood sugar. I can't guarantee you'll have the same experience. But I think we had a better outcome than a lifetime of shots. |

Do movies with a titular character name often flop? Seems like Steve Jobs, John Wick, Michael Clayton (badass movie btw) and John Carter all were recent semi bombs. I'm not talking about "Batman" or something, but rather 2 real name titles.

So, let's see if I have this about right.
1. People start getting iPods and iPhones, that becomes a big thing 2. Good hotels sense this is a big thing, and start offering alarm clock stations that recharge and play from your iPod/iPhone 3. Apple changed the plug-in system, forcing scads of customers to buy new chargers and docking stations 4. Hotels collectively say "well, fuck it" and still offer the now semi-obsolete old style i-docking station that many/most of the customers they wanted to impress/serve can't use at all |
