this might be my new all-time favorite (Nutchos and Oh Henrys are Canadian chocolate bars)

I had to remove a couple people from my newsfeed because they only post about Zeal, the Christian Pyramid Scheme. Another one removed me as a "friend" because I asked questions about it and its supposed health benefits. I use Facebook to stay connected to people not be targeted in a marketing campaign.

Any post warning us about new Facebook policies. It would seem that if you don't copy and paste that post the creators of facebook will show up and murder your entire family, rape your dog, burn down your house and take a dump in your car...

Yeah, I saw that stuff and just had to put up a mock post of it. Then saw that Macroguru and Frogman had done the same.

THIS.

I posted something along the lines of Facebook shouldn't used to sell things to your "friends". If you want to do that, create a separate page to sell your shlock. One person was offended enough to private message me, asking me what I had against his product (Beach Body / Shakeology) and went as far as saying I was against fitness and maybe if I tried his product I wouldn't be fat.

Haha sure, but I've got my own workout regimen to slim down. I don't need his constant workout pictures and poor sales pitches bloating my feed. I also never really considered 15lbs overweight fat, but to each their own, right?

I have a friend who's a small-press author, and she says that facebook is constantly fighting authors on crossing the line into advertising. If she posts things like "Getting really excited for my book signing coming up tomorrow night at the Main Street Barnes and Noble! Goes from 7-9. Would love your support if you can make it!" she is likely get get dinged for marketing from her personal page. She's set up a professional/author page for stuff like that.

I don't get how facebook has the sense to crack down on small artists, but seems to have no problem getting over-run with pyramid schemes and not-even-trying-to-hide-it marketing campaigns.

On a related note, facebook is now blocked at work thanks to one of my co-workers abusing it. I don't miss it much. But I now realize how many of my friends use it to keep in touch. There's a lot of "hey, man, are you free for lunch this week?" messages I get. People don't really use email anymore for stuff like that. Which is just brilliant by facebook. Because even as I drift away from it for entertainment, it has managed to make enough of a hook into my life that I can't really abandon it.

It's the worst.

I also had a friend of my girlfriend's who was shilling products from a company called "It Works!"

Facebook loves the pyramid schemes.

I still say essential oils might be the worst. With a sudden surge in life insurance schemes & 9th-rate utility companies making a recent charge.

Sometimes I just have to face palm when I read this stuff. One of the super right wing contingent from school posted a beauty today. It is a meme about how many people leaders like Hitler and Stalin murdered after disarming their people. It ends with question marks after Obama's murder number because he wants to "disarm his people."

Of course someone follows that up with the Switzerland requires gun ownership meme.

I swear people get stupid when they talk about guns.

The Hitler gun control lie - Salon.com

Quote:
University of Chicago law professor Bernard Harcourt explored this myth in depth in a 2004 article published in the Fordham Law Review. As it turns out, the Weimar Republic, the German government that immediately preceded Hitler’s, actually had tougher gun laws than the Nazi regime. After its defeat in World War I, and agreeing to the harsh surrender terms laid out in the Treaty of Versailles, the German legislature in 1919 passed a law that effectively banned all private firearm possession, leading the government to confiscate guns already in circulation. In 1928, the Reichstag relaxed the regulation a bit, but put in place a strict registration regime that required citizens to acquire separate permits to own guns, sell them or carry them.

The 1938 law signed by Hitler that LaPierre mentions in his book basically does the opposite of what he says it did. “The 1938 revisions completely deregulated the acquisition and transfer of rifles and shotguns, as well as ammunition,” Harcourt wrote. Meanwhile, many more categories of people, including Nazi party members, were exempted from gun ownership regulations altogether, while the legal age of purchase was lowered from 20 to 18, and permit lengths were extended from one year to three years.

I especially like how they have to put the Muslim slant into that by adding Obama's middle name.

Does it count as a post if I'm at my limit with seeing crap I have no desire to see and that I'm pretty sure the person responsible had no intention for me to be drawn into in the first place?

My own FB post explains what I mean here:

Dear Facebook,
Just because my friends/acquaintances have some questionable tastes, view, etc. does not mean you have to inflict their "Likes" upon ME. Why on why did you take away the ability to choose the layer of detail that we see?

I get it idea, "it'll promote traffic" you thought. WRONG. It promotes me grinding my teeth really hard & using every last @#$^@$%^ ounce of patience I have left in my body to not rip some of the uttelry worthless idiots I'm involuntarily exposed to into tiny bits of fecal matter instead of the larger piles of it that is their current state.

If one of my FB friends _shares_ something, then they're responsible for my exposure & I'll deal with that accordingly. But it's HIGHLY irritating that you choose to shove it in my face when they merely _liked_ it. That's between them & the piles of dung, kindly leave me out of it.

This simultaneously made me laugh and feel very despaired that this algorithm surely suggests links to "Red Blooded Patriot Memes 'N Studies That Got Published in A Scientific Journal That Publishes Anything If You Pay Them" in response to something more thought-provoking. The algorithm could probably have a pointless political argument with itself, and if you don't even need humans to do that, what do you need them for?

I had a Facebook friend complain that Ingress would not have in-app purchases. So that it would unlevel the playing field for those who don't wish to pay - Heaven forbid if a company doesn't want to continue to give away a game for totally free and actually wants to make money on the thing . And the irony in it is this guy is a musician who posts all sorts of things about paying for music and how music isn't free. Total disconnect.

It's basically a geo-location game. You are either on the green or blue team and you claim portals or blow up the other side's portals and claim them as you own and it goes back and forth. Created originally through Google's Labs and then when Google became Alphabet, that company was spun off as an independent company.

Cool, thanks.

I just didn't have the urge to spend time sidetracking myself by Googling it tbh, this was exactly the layman's summary I needed.

Yeah, I guess I should have originally mentioned it was a free game app - my general point was the ridiculousness of complaining that a free game was trying to make money, as if they were not supposed to do that or something.

Ok. So what is up with the "lost dog/cat" people? I love pets and I'm sad when they get lost. But you don't need to keep spamming every time a lost mixed breed border collie turns up missing. Or 87million different common cats. It's just kind of weird. You can only have one designated "lost dog" sharer, or it gets crazy.

This is getting pretty ridiculous.

My FB Friend A makes a new friend B, a person I've never heard of in my life. My news feed has at least a half dozen cases today where B says "nice to meet you" to A .... WHY is that any of my business?

Neither A nor B is to blame for the spam of course, it's simply FB desperately trying to generate faux engagement.

This made me laugh, and semi-related to Jon's comment. Today's leader in Stoner Metal and technology watchdogging:

Facebook post suppression has increased dramatically in recent weeks. Sorry but we won't pay them to hold our posts hostage. If you miss an announcement here, then please follow us on Twitter as well and we will be thinking of better ways to get the word out. This platform is broken. RIP Myspace.

Smoke weed.

...Facebook does seem to be getting a lot more aggressive about invisibly serving users specific content. There's a lot of clues pointing to that whole Chewbacca Mom phenomenon as a calculated invention of Facebook (Live!) marketing. It's pretty gross to think how sophisticated manipulated content and hidden advertising have become on the internet in such a short time, 1984 gets a little closer ever day.

By the same token, the lack of understanding -- specifically within the music community -- about the simple reality of algorithms being necessary for the typical user, and how they're better off because it exists has to be one of THE most annoying things on FB.

I follow 300+ bands. If that shit was allowed to spam my newsfeed ahead of actual friends & family, I'd be following zero bands ... and what's their gain in THAT?
