Henry Walker says he shattered his hip buying a watermelon at Walmart. An Alabama jury awarded him $7.5 million. - The Washington Post

The US legal system and this culture of suing is just so damn weird. Probably not even the strangest case this week, but this one made it onto the google news headlines at the right time for me to notice it ...

I mean, from the title i at least expected him to grab a melon, 50 more being dislodged and him breaking his hip frantically dodging them and crashing into a concrete column or sth.

(Also, dear Washington Post: He most certainly did not break his hip while buying the melon. He broke it while trying to grab it from the display. And i sincerely doubt he ended up buying it I wonder if an Editor nowadays sees this and says to himself "ah fuck it, no one cares".)

If he had ordered his watermelon from Amazon Prime, none of this ever would have happened. Two day wait for the watermelon, though.

'Smallville' Actress Allison Mack Arrested in Alleged Cult Sex Trafficking Case | Hollywood Reporter

Notable names that have been associated with this MLM / cult* include Richard Branson (unconfirmed), Linda Evans, BET co-founder Sheila Johnson, former surgeon general Antonia Novello, Seagram's Edward Bronfman Jr & his two daughters, the son of former Mexico president Salinas, the daughter of former Mexico president Fox, and several miscellaneous Hollywood actresses.

*None of these have been associated specifically with the sex trafficking aspect, only with the "seminars" afaik

I get wanting to set context to a question but definitely inappropriate. Hope they catch this person.

Florida dad outraged by sexually explicit question on teen's homework assignment | Fox News
Quote:
Omar Austin had to do a double take when he spotted a sexually explicit question on his teenage daughter's homework assignment this week.

"This needs to be seen. [What the hell] is going on in our schools???" the Florida father asked as he read the question aloud in a video posted to Facebook on Wednesday.

The multiple choice question reportedly read, "Ursula was devastated when her boyfriend broke up with her after having sex. To get revenge, she had sex with his best friend the next day. Ursula had a beautiful baby girl nine months later. Ursula has type O blood, her ex-boyfriend has AB blood and his best friend is type A blood. If her baby daddy is her ex-boyfriend what could the possible blood type(s) of her baby NOT be."

idk, that doesn't scream anything to me. Maybe a little convoluted, could have been worded slightly differently, but how is it not sexually explicit? Cause it has the word sex in it?

I don't think its sexually explicit and that is not my point.

You don't think the context re: revenge sex is inappropriate context for a HS test question?

To be fair it happens all the time in society. We see it in movies, television, social media. Like I said, it's not the best example for a test question, but the 'people' aren't in high school necessarily. My kids, FR/SO probably wouldn't bat an eyelash at such a thing. The question itself wouldn't be the focal point of the problem. The problem itself would be. I would hope the class would have gotten a good laugh out of it.

Ditto here. And I'm not sure anything past about middle school would bat an eye at the question.

I didn't realize there was a difference in definition of polygamy re: marriage and civil unions.

I think in the US a person is not allowed to have multiple civil unions at the same time? So this must be a Brazilian thing? Or am I mistaken?

Ronaldinho Reportedly Will Marry His 2 Fiancees in August Ceremony | Bleacher Report | Latest News, Videos and Highlights
Quote:
Brazilian football legend Ronaldinho will reportedly "marry" two women at the same time during a small wedding ceremony in August.

While polygamy is outlawed in Brazil, O Dia (h/t Dan Gartland of Sports Illustrated) reported civil unions between more than two persons is not uncommon. Ronaldinho, Priscilla Coelho and Beatriz Souza already live together.

I remember reading about mysterious old books years ago.

Glad to hear one of them is (hopefully) solved.

https://www.cnn.com/2018/06/15/healt...ery/index.html
Quote:
Ahmet Ardic -- an electrical engineer by profession, whose lifelong passion has been researching Turkic languages, linguistics and etymological roots -- stumbled upon a copy of the Voynich manuscript online four years ago.

Like so many others, he was intrigued and began working on it by himself for a year. He then enlisted his two sons, Ozan and Alp Erkan, to help.

The Ardic family have published a video on YouTube explaining their theory. They say they're certain the manuscript is written in a type of Old Turkic dialect or a combination of dialects -- mostly written in phonemic orthography, or language written as it is spoken.
