People are supposed to grade political editions on a curve.
Though it doesn't seem that's happening.

As if my trip to Mississippi wasn't going to be enough fun today, apparently I get to do it without my glasses.
I discovered that they weren't were they'd normally be about 2am. Since then I've turned the house upside down, including checking inside the fridge twice. And, no, they aren't on top of my head. I checked there twice too. Yep, this is going to be ... an adventure. Should be a really interesting driving experience.

Nope, though I did look. (I never do that at home, oddly enough, only when I'm out) It feels like one of those weird bounce deals, where something falls from its normal spot, then lands oddly and turns into a bad hop sorta thing.

Deniece Williams. But yeah, totally sounds like an early Whitney Houston song. Predated her by a year or two I think. This song was from Footloose.

I always keep an old pair in reserve for when I go exercising, do the lawn, etc. Often I'll have the one before that sitting around, too, (out of laziness of not getting rid of it from when it was the outdoor pair). Even with insurance, they cost a couple hundred bucks because of the coatings and transitions so I might as well keep them around since my eyes haven't changed much in 20 years. Though from what I understand, that will probably change soon.

$, plain and simple. When I got these (after progressive lenses failed spectacularly), I got one pair bifocals (with new frames) and one pair of single vision (also new frames) for use at the computer since my normal comfortable distance didn't really suit either of the bifocal ranges. 2 pair were bitch enough on the household budget at the time, never mind 3 or 4 pair.

I did not like progressive glasses. So I own a magnifying glass. I do have older pairs around in case I lose the ones I wear. And a prescription sunglass pair for outside. One day mt dog ate my glasses, that was an expensive adventure.

Getting a messed up delivery from a 3rd party (uber eats, door dash, ect) fixed is apparently a fucking nightmare.
We were hungry and tired after work Tuessday so we decided to order BBQ and we wanted enough for that night and lunch the next day since we were all going to be home. BBQ options are fairly limited in Washington state so we ended up going with Famous Dave's. As far as BBQ options go there are far better, I know, I lived in San Antonio a couple miles from Rudy's before it became a chain. It's what we have here that I can get through delivery. Anyway, we place a fairly large order considering there's only 3 of us and wait. About an hour later I get a text from the driver "they're running behind. They said at least 10 more minutes". Ok, cool. Thanks for the update. Then 3-4 minutes later she was on her way with our food. Odd... My wife goes out to get the food and comes in and points out that it doesn't seem like much food. I open everything up and we're short at least 80% of our order. We got a bit of 1 meat (thankfully brisket), some fries, and some cole slaw. So I call famous daves and get the run around for a bit as they decide who should take my call. I finally get on the phone with a manager and explain the situation. He offers us a $150 gift card and says he'll call Postmates (the delivery service) and ask for the order to be refunded. We're now on Saturday and I still haven't received a refund. I spoke to the manager again and he's actually been amazing. He explained a simple call to request the refund wasn't enough and that he's had to email people above him at Famous Dave's and Postmates to explain the issue and he's basically waiting on Postmates to admit their driver fucked up and issue the refund. After speaking to a couple other people that have had issues with deliveries it seems like the general rule these places try to go by is if you accept the food the transaction is complete and you're not eligible for a refund. This kind of makes sense if we're talking about a missing item or getting something wrong. That's the restaurant's mistake they can sort it out. But leaving without almost my entire order? I'll take my refund. |

We arrived on Nantucket today for our annual vacation. On July 16th I sent a big box to the property management company with stuff you can't get here easily. TP, Paper Towels, dish soap, etc...This was their idea.
We arrived today and it wasn't here. I tracked the shipment and the last update from the USPS was 7/21 saying in transit and will be delayed. No shit! Really pissed about it. Going to try and track it down Monday but what a joke. I send 2 boxes the same size the same day to England and they arrived a week ago. |

The newly appointed postmaster general also explicitly changed how & when first class mail is handled and sorted very recently. Dunno if/how that would effect package delivery, but the mail carriers I know certainly weren't thinking of it as a positive:

My crappy food luck is the stuff of legend, so to have the complete opposite of that experience tonight stands a very legit chance of being the highlight of this otherwise batshit year.
So if anybody within an hour of Sugar Hill, GA wants a treat, Samba Brazilian Steakhouse gets my vote. "A truly enjoyable experience from start to finish. No sign of corners being cut, a welcoming attitude that made first-timers feel both appreciated and immediately comfortable, well paced service, and food that makes you wish you had room for more. As good as the food was, being in a place where I felt welcome and well taken care of was arguably even better. I can't say enough about how valuable that is,now maybe more than ever."

There's a bit of backstory to this trip (my first as well). For months I've been meaning to try what some friends of mine described as "the outlet mall priced version of a Brazilian steakhouse"; i.e. it didn't require an additional mortgage to enjoy. I'm a devoted carnivore, my child is a full-blooded carnivore, and my wife wanted to have a quiet night at home after being on the road all week, so she strongly suggested we go have a guy's meal before he heads south this coming week. Buuuuuut ... in looking up the intended destination, the reviews of the place post-Covid are just horrible. Food quantity AND quality both in severe decline apparently. So in looking for a possible replacement, we first found a place that had similar recent reviews, and then found the one you saw me rave about here. We chanced it based on the fact that the only complaints in recent months were about a price increase (pre-Covid was $25/person, re-opening price was $40/person) but nothing negative about the food or service. We pull up and there's not a car in sight, we're thinking oh shit, this is gonna be bad cause they aren't going to be cooking much with no customers. But, boy were we wrong. I think we got 9 different cuts (of a possible 12-14 on their published menu), each served at our stated doneness (they asked, and hit it spot on). Might have gotten more but we hit the surrender point before then. Over the evening, a few other customers did show up & eat, with an unexpected quirk: they were all speaking what sure sounded like Portugese. If that ain't a sign you're in the right Brazilian steakhouse then by golly I don't know what would be.

Noooooot exactly true. The USPS itself cut costs in the wake of significant financial problems, Congress simply declined to give them a requested $75B a few months back. A deal was reached this week - in light of attempts at improving their financial situation - to give them what amounts to a credit line of $10B for now with the key stipulation that the deals (long suspected to be sweetheart deals) cut with various shippers be available for Treasury to review. As for delays, they're currently experience parcel volume that exceeds holiday levels, so that's rather predictable.

Well, the USPS was also required to prefund 75 years worth of pensions for everyone they hired, so they've been doing more with less.
But in non argumentative news, I feel old. Fox Sports will be airing RollerGames in August and September. Yes, the show that originally aired 30 years ago is getting a re-air. Why? Because it's 30th anniversary? Some. Fox Sports running out of things to air during the summer? Likely. Because RollerGames was totally awesome and should have lasted longer then that hack show.. what was it called, American Gladiators? Totally.

That's honestly what always scares me away Even $40 sounds reasonable compared to some of the places I've casually looked at (and $25 pre-covid sounds like an insane deal).

I've seen reports that if they weren't required to set aside billions of dollars each year due to the prefund thing, they would have made record profits six years running through 2019.
(then again, if they had that money, they would've spent a lot of it on refurbishing/repairing their vehicles (they've had a record number of mail trucks just combust this year, because they're so old and lack of upgrades.)
