We're further north and east from the devastation, but the storms rolled through overnight with 70mph gusts. We still had tornado watches and severe thunderstorm warnings. I was on Chicago all day yesterday on call and I was happy I made it back home late last night right before everything hit.

Looks like the death toll in Mayfield may not be as bad as first thought. They assumed most of the workers at the candle factory were missing but they were in a tornado shelter and went home after the storm cleared. With no power or communication and it being dark, they had no idea the workers were safe until people started coming forward. Good news.

Someone down the street from us posted on Next Door that they found a picture dated April 1979 in their driveway yesterday. Several of us immediately speculated that it could be from the Friday night storms. We're over 250 miles from Mayfield, so likely not from there (although it's possible), but Bowling Green is 150 miles away and Taylorsville, 50 miles due west of us, also had tornadoes. I'd bet anything that picture is not from around here.

My uncle lives in Louisville (aka next door to Superior). Neighbor's house 3 doors down was already on fire when the evacuation order came in, judging from reports on locations, his house is gone. He had time to get his cats out, his wife out, a changes of clothes, and a bunch of cash he kept. Everything else is likely gone. They found a hotel in Boulder to stay tonight, nothing he can do but wait until morning to see if he got massively lucky.

Word is, massive swaths of Louisville and Superior are ash.

The intersection the poster is referring to is one street away from my Uncle's house.

And this is directly across the major street from his neighborhood.

Different broken weather here
Houston closes the book on the warmest December on record – Space City Weather

Quote:
Through yesterday, the average temperature in Houston (Bush) is 67.5° for the month of December. Adding an expected 83 and, call it 68 today gets us to 67.8° for the month, shattering the record from 1933 by 3.4 degrees. This will also be the widest gap between warmest and second warmest of any month in Houston. Only August comes close, where the difference between the horrific August of 2011 and 2010 was 2.7 degrees. Basically, this December was Houston’s most anomalous warm month on record.

We've had at least the 3rd warmest December on record in Lexington by average high temperature. Our normal average is 44 and it was averaging 54 a few days ago before a run of 60-70 degree days, so I expect we may be top 2 by the time tonight wraps up . We finish the year in the upper 60s with a huge storm rolling through tonight and tomorrow and by Sunday, we may see the first flakes of the season.

A tornado crossed right in front of my wife as she was driving home tonight. Good deal of damage to houses not two miles from my house, and trees are blocking the Publix parking lot. It wasn't even raining here. I was outside when it happened and I didn't even hear anything.

Weird pop up ones on both sides of the state tonight -- Pickens/Gordon, Newton/Walton,then Paulding/Cobb and a separate Walton/Morgan/Oconee

The latter no more than 15 minutes from me but nary even a ripple of a breeze here

Yeah, bizarre that the storm took a southerly route so we got nothing in Central KY but looks like Nashville got sleet/snow.

If you check out a precipitation map of TN right now, you may see every color they use on display. Amazing. I'm west of Lexington, so we won't see anything until this afternoon and it looks to be mostly snow, but south to east of us, it's going to be an icy mess.

Too bad the Titans aren't hosting a game this afternoon because it should be a wet, heavy snow by then.

Sadly didn't get quite cold enough here in Myrtle for some snow or even maybe frozen rain. Inland SC not so (or very lucky).

We are just getting strong winds and rain right now. It shows it turning over to snow around noon through the rest of the day. Nothing is really going to stick or probably even freeze here. The temperature is only going to dip below freezing early in the morning for a couple of hours. A little north of here is going to be a different story.

Looks like 14-16 inches of snow from this storm, which, combined with 20-30 mph winds, gives us 2-foot drifts here and there. That's the most we've had since moving. Ashtabula (about 90 minutes from here), which gets a lot of lake effect snow, apparently got 27 inches.

I used to have a nightly delivery to Conneaut which is right down the road from Ashtabula and it was always dicey on 90 in the winter. Did you move to like Akron or Kent or Cleveland recently?

It was a mighty Sun snow storm north of Atlanta.

About < 1 inch of snow, most melted today but chance of refreezing tonight as it'll dip into the 20's.

Possible Wednesday evening snow here, now. Awesome. Making up for a warm December. We're closing in on our seasonal average for snow for Lexington just in January.

Not severe weather, but today the forecast was for some light snot this morning, nothing more than an inch of snow but.....

It's been snowing all day long, we're up over 4 inches, and the side roads are frozen over because they didn't treat them today. Interstates are good, but all the side streets are messed up. We shoveled earlier in the day, but it's all gone again.

Weird that the weather forecast was this far off.

My kid and weather.

He heads back to Miami tomorrow (completing the trip on Sunday)

It'll be the coldest temps in Miami (40) in 11 years, with still an outside chance of a setting an 81 year record during the weekend (that'd be 36)

Probably no fort with my health conditions, but for those of you who have me on FB, I took a "before" photo just as it started, and will take another one after it's all done.

3 inches or so here, but lots of wind and very cold. I just shoveled some for a loan closing that may or may not happen and it was really light and fluffy. Very easy to shovel.
