I used to do a handful of audio books a year. But, well, no commute since March so that's gone by the wayside.

I'm listening to my daughter's 2nd-grade teacher doing her remote lesson. She just said "40 take-away 31." I'm reminded of how much my mother hate hate HATED the term "take-away." Like pathologically. So much so that 40-45 years later I still bristle at the term in the knowledge of how it would have set off my mom.

I am now officially boycotting the director's cut of Rocky 4.

Sylvester Stallone removes Paulie’s robot from director's cut of Rocky IV

They had tennis scores across the ESPN front page and I saw there was a player named "J. Sock". When I clicked on it, I was really disappointed to find out his first name was not "Jim". Yes, I am 5.

Someone just mentioned this in a podcast I was watching. They should put bathrooms at the back of theaters that have one-way mirrors that would allow you to keep watching the movie while you go. Probably works better with a trough than with the crapper.

I have an old i7-6700 desktop with 8GB RAM that I recently upgraded to 16GB. When I was playing games on the 8GB, I would monitor memory usage on Task Manager and it never got close to using all 8GB.

Now with 16GB, it tells me I'm using 58% of RAM when playing Civ so I am using more than 8GB.

I guess that is good but TBH I can't really tell the difference in performance.

The hidden costs of a mask mandate - I just spent over $10 more than I expected to on deli cheese because the dude apparently couldn't hear the difference between half-pound and pound, and quarter pound and three-quarter pound.

So, if anyone needs some cheddar or jalapeno jack, I'm your man.

It is kind of nuts. My daughter pulled out every tooth she ever lost. She didn't use pliers thought.

The time of day and the time of year passing through my windshield tonight gave me a definite realization:

I was pretty happy to NOT be roasting inside a press box with no a/c, squinting against the sun, battling the sweat in my eyes, trying to find an accurate copy of the opposing team's roster, wondering what last name was going to trip me up, and worrying about every technical thing that could go wrong no matter how low the odds.

I may occasionally miss the excitement, moreso maybe the comforting feeling you get when you're in the zone and you know it, when describing whatever happens in front of you is as natural as breathing ... but I definitely don't miss all the things that you had to go through to get there.

Ultimately I aged out. If I was a car I'd be high mileage, bad tires, leaking oil, and in dire need of a paint job. I'm okay with that really, we all hit our limit at some point. I'm honestly kinda relieved that I knew when mine arrived.

But when the temperature is just so, and the sun is at a certain angle, and it's a certain time of day in September, I do still remember.

My PS3 ate my disc and won't let it go.

Where is Mizzou-B-ball fan fan to whisper sweet nothings in my ear and tell me this is a feature and it's all X-Box's fault.

Dude this happened to me. I looked it up on youtube and beat the shit out of it and it wouldnt let go. I ended up spending $70 to get it fixed. One of the wheels on the eject function broke and would not let the disc out.

Then when fixing it, my hard drive died and he had to reset it and I lost my NCAA14 career which was about 17 seasons into it. That really bummed me out.

I looked up fixes on Youtube and it seems like simply mashing buttons won't work.

The next step requires a philips screwdriver that is smaller than anything I currently have.

Yeah, there is a manual eject. Mine did not work because of the wheel. I used an eyeglass phillips screw driver that did not work for obvious reasons (broken wheel).

Here's another sexual identity term. Anyone here suffering from this problem?

The alarming rise of the technosexuals
Quote:
If the pandemic wasn’t a surreal enough experience, a recent study suggests that lockdown has amplified a disturbing trend. Research by sex toy company WeVibe revealed that 14 per cent of men admit to being aroused by their smart-speaker Alexa, which confirms my view that we have been sleepwalking into a different kind of epidemic – one of loneliness and fear of intimacy.

I’ve been a practising psychotherapist for 20 years, and never have I worked with so many men and women who are unhappy and scared because their deepest attachments and primary source of arousal are through interacting with their tech. I call these people ‘technosexuals’.

Technosexuals are joined – as though surgically – to their favourite gadgets. Whether it’s the ‘ping’ of a message, swiping right, or the seductive, authoritative tones of a cloud-based voice service, their tech fulfils them by mobilising the reward system in the brain and releasing dopamine – the ‘happiness hormone’.

The instant activity of using their tech – likes and comments – is like a sexual turn on. This ‘dopamine hit’ happens in all of us but, in technosexuals, something else is at play.

For them, the modern digital world influences all their libidinous activity. It dictates who they fancy, and how they present and value themselves.

I'm looking around the USA Today college athletics database and I had no idea Texas A&M generates far more income than any other SEC team. In 18/19 they had about 40 million more than second place Georgia.

Yep, though boosted by a significant influx of contributions tied to construction projects. The tricky part is maintaining that level once an expansion phase is completed.

Again, the data only goes to 18/19, but they were on a streak of five years with at least 75 mil in donations. To put that in context, Georgia had one year of @68 mil, but then 54, 52, 33, and 33 for the remainder of the five year period. Alabama averaged @30 mil. LSU was 30 to 40 mil. Auburn was mid to high 30s.

Makes me think they can absolutely be a national power in multiple sports over the next decade.

Don't get me wrong, I wasn't kicking dirt on it at all.

But pretty much every story about their situation for the past few seasons (since 2014 really) has mentioned that factor (certainly it's been the difference in bumping them ahead of Texas if nothing else).

I don't know if they will be, but they're in the top echelon of money programs. I would expect either the teams show more success or the money dries up a bit. The latter is probably more likely, but this money run is very impressive.

There's got to be a word or name for seeing someone trending on Twitter, so you go to see why they are trending, half-expecting to find out they died, and 90% of the trending feed is people tweeting that they thought that person died and Twitter scared them - but you can't find any other reason they are trending. This morning it was Stevie Nicks and Steve Perry.

It's like sitting in slowly moving traffic on a highway expecting to come up on an accident and then all of a sudden everyone is doing 70 again and you're like, WTF was that all about?

I wonder what percentage of specifically people with back injuries who are prescribed opioids become addicted. It feels like any documentary that broaches the topic is filled with people who have with back injuries more than anything else.

I wonder if my full time job was to do nothing but play games, and I spent 40 hours a week, 48 weeks a year playing them, if I would complete every game in my back log (360, PS4, Steam, Twitch, Epic) before retirement at age 65 (another 24 years)?

About 11%, according to one source I finally found (you know me, I Google random shit to see if I can find answers)

That's 4th on the list of abuse by reason-for-taking (joint pain, neck pain, abdominal pain, back pain, arthritis are the top five). It does note that they make up a high percentage of "abusers", but that's due to the high number of possibles, not due to a higher rate.

And at 11% or so, that's a little below the overall rate that's usually cited (which is around 12%)

It is crazy how over prescribed they are. I had to have injections for my shoulder. The doctor prescribed 40 oxy, then he had to delay the procedure by 4 days and prescribed 40 more. I didn't even know he had until the pharmacy called. I took 2 one day and was out of my mind. Threw them out and didn't even pick up the second refill.
