Tombstone is a movie about the dangers and risks of over-arching gun control policy and the Cowboys were the good guys.

Never considered the flushing power of a toilet until buying a house with toilets that take forever to flush.

First upgrade... toilets!!

Sorry to hear, Cartman. Hope he recovers. About 15 years ago, we had a similar situation with an aunt up in Michigan. Except... my relatives up there were about 2 weeks too late. Tremendously sad.

I'm surprised it's taken so long. TAB was one of the first diet drinks I tried, it was tolerable then and clearly superseded now. The "zero" stuff is great.

Heading out in a bit to meet my cousins to hand over to them my uncle's stuff that I have.

He's been getting steadily better. Last night we got a report that he was talking, sometimes they could understand him, other times they said it was gibberish.

We started talking about it, and were thinking he might have been speaking Russian, since he was a Russian specialist in the NSA for over 30 years. To someone who didn't know or wasn't expecting to hear Russian, it would sound like gibberish.

Got a further update a little bit ago that he's now awake and does respond to his name, which is great news. The doctors told us he would have died within a few hours if we hadn't been there to find him when we did.

You ain't lyin'

I'm so old that I remember the good old days, when pretty much all stores here had a "if you're buying lottery tickets, stand to the side" rule at the register.

Very good news. And the insight about Russian will likely be useful for the doctors.

Did they ever reach a conclusion about what put him in such dire straits? Was it simply untreated pneumonia or was there more to it?

For the most part, the stores I go into on a regualr basis have a specific register for lottery tickets. The ones that drive me up a wall are the people that buy cigarettes at Wal-mart and the people that wait until the end of their purchase to go searching for the checkbook.

I have to ask the dumb question since it's 2020 - was COVID ruled out since it looks a lot like pneumonia? (And, in that case, have you taken precautions for yourself, too?)

Still no definitive cause yet. They did check for COVID and he was clear. The pneumonia has cleared up, so he isn't intubated anymore. But he is still in the ICU.

He is responding more, but he still doesn't recognize people. When my cousins (his daughters) made it to town, he told them he wasn't having a good day when they saw him. No clue if he still thinks this is all part of the same day.

a good dola

My cousin went to go see him this morning, and he recognized her and started asking lots of questions. He said he wanted to eat. Also said he wanted to get up and leave. So he is making great progress.

After she sent the messages, I realized he's now been in the hospital about as long as he was on the ground.

Went to go see my uncle last night. He was asleep, but woke up for a bit, but was still super sleepy, in that dream like state.

Good news is that they transferred him this morning to an acute care rehab facility, where he'll be for the next 4 to 6 weeks. My cousins have said he is having memory and recall issues. He recognizes pictures of some of his grandkids, but not others. He also thinks Obama is still president.

Have they ruled out some form of a stroke? (you haven't mentioned it so I'm guessing they have). I mean, he ended up on the floor for some reason. The pneumonia is certainly enough to do it to someone but the range of possibilities could have it been cause _or_ complication.

This story is such a nightmare scenario that it has stuck with me I guess so I don't mean to be nosy a.f. I'm just ... interested?

I've been going into the office once or twice a week now for the past several months. I keep pretty much the same morning schedule - hit the road by 6:10, get to the office by 7:10.

95% of my drive is on the interstate and for the past 3 weeks, I've seen the same car on my drive at about the same time/place, in the right lane, doing maybe 40-45 mph tops, with their hazards on. First time, I figured they had a problem with their car. Then it kept happening every morning that I've gone into work, so I've seen this car about 4-5 times now.

I've come to the conclusion this must be someone who is afraid to drive on the interstate in the dark. If you have a serious problem with your car that prevents you from driving anywhere near the speed limit, it seems a little too risky to continue driving on an interstate in the dark every morning for weeks on end. I can't think of any other scenario that makes sense, other than this person probably shouldn't have a drivers license.

Still don't have a diagnosis for the root cause. I'm guessing now that he's out of ICU, they'll be able to run other tests they might not have been able to do.

I think a stroke is definitely a possibility, also some sort of diabetic event (he's type 2). When they paramedics got there, they ran a blood sugar test and it was 300, which is pretty damn high for not eating for several days. Hopefully we'll get some answers in the upcoming days/weeks.

My town has decided to pour a ton of money into revitalizing the sleepy downtown and the sad/dead mall near my house. This is awesome, and it has already increased our property value, and will increase it more, and it will just make living where I live more awesome b/c we will be within a long walk or a short drive of much better stuff.

And I swear, 90% of the comments on the local online/facebook neighborhood groups is just bitching about anticipated traffic.

These people would rather live next to an abandoned Sears than a shop or restaurant that people might actually want to go to. I don't get it at all.

Something like this deep sixed a proposed revitalization of a dead mall near my home. They were going to transform it into an outdoor mall with a Costco, but all the traffic complaints and pet projects requested for the development killed it. Super annoying.

Well, if you're not planning on selling then increased property value kinda has limited value, mostly just leads to higher property tax assessment.

As for "something that people might wanna go to" ... that's really only a plus if you're the one wanting to go to whatever it is. Otherwise it's just an annoyance. Maybe whatever is anticipated doesn't interest them?

I get the complaints. If the people complaining did not want to live next to an abandoned Sears, they would have moved when the Sears became abandoned. Even if it is something I would love to have close by, the traffic around my house would give me pause.

Not that it really matters for me in 2020.

Great idea for a 21st century family sitcom episode: middle schooler goes to a new school, is accepted into "popular crowd", but has parents who won't get her a smartphone at this age, so she gives her new friends "her" cell phone number--which is actually her mom's number. Hilarity ensues when her parents refuse to cover for her deception, but also don't out her.

Uh, this is just a scenario I made up, of course. I'm just creative like that.

If a candidate is directly speaking in an ad, is it REALLY necessary that they say "I approve this message"?

Uh, this is just a scenario I made up, of course. I'm just creative like that.

I admire those parents. They should be careful though. Middle school age girls are the most vicious species on the planet.

Science is really cool.

CBD store created a THC alternative which changes THC from a psychoactive to a psychotropic. And they have gummies.

Crazy

EDIT: It is legal so far.

I saw a sign for CBD at a gas station. So like....is all this flim flam?

If this stuff is everywhere now it makes me not trust buying it. Mainly because it might not be authentic

Where is a trusted source?

Psychotropic and psychoactive means the same thing. Lungs has a whole thread about farming hemp for CBD here:

For the record, since I still consistently see most people confused about this: CBD will not get you the slightest bit 'high'. In fact CBD has actually been proven to make you less high. Some folks claim CBD reduces the symptoms of ailments like anxiety & chronic pain (though it's never worked for me in those areas fwiw), but I doubt that's what they're suggesting at the gas station boner pill & organic speed display. There are plenty of unscrupulous brands & vendors out there trying to take people's money by murkily implying that CBD will get you intoxicated or buzzed in some manner. It won't.

Stupid as it may seem, it's part of McCain-Feingold

Prior to 2002, the requirement only kicked in if the candidate (or the candidate's voice, for radio) did not appear in the spot.

Back in my local radio days we used it a fair bit because a lot of candidates for downballot county races didn't much care for how they sounded and had announcers cut their spot instead.

Sidebar: exceptionally crowded field races were a pain in the butt for small stations because a common rule of thumb was that no announcer would voice ads for two candidates in the same race but you ended up with more candidates than announcers now & then. Thankfully we had a sister station a hundred miles away that we'd trade voiceovers with in those cases but remember, this was still in the tape days, so that meant packing & shipping.

Nothing says "politicians can't be trusted" like forcing them to tell you they approve a message they are directly saying to you.
