If we only count Georgia's kicker vs. TCU then it's actually only a narrow 10-7 lead for Georgia.

Carson Beck is going to have some good competition for starter next year. I'm also sure some walk-on will get a good look.

Nice. I made a rather large amount on the over 63. Helpful since I have to pay the remainder of our Disney trip in 3 days.

They need to learn how to run clock slower.

Sheesh, now it's pity time.

Fire the kicker. I picked the points total at 73 and he missed!

Maybe they can move the ball once Georgia goes to the third stri.... nah, who am I kidding?

When you get down to it, the only team better than mediocre TCU played all year was K-State. And they split with them.

Perhaps it's time to rethink the selection process (and I say that while admitting I had TCU as one of the four without hesitation ... though I did at least know that was two too many)

And let's be honest about Duggan (as they talk about his getting a chance at the next level)

He finished the season 1-2, with 3 TDs and 5 INTs and just barely over 50% completions. I won't question his physical toughness but just about everything else is open for debate afaic.

Nah. Biggest takeaway from all this is the experts don't know as much as they sometimes think they do. A single football game is unpredictable, and the 'best' team doesn't win nearly as often as we'd like to think. The whole transitive 'Michigan beat Ohio State, Ohio State nearly beat Georgia, TCU beat Michigan, TCU should beat Georgia or at least be super-competitive' thing just doesn't fly. There are too many factors and too much variance in these competitions to deduce it out that way.

Sometimes stuff just happens that has a really low probability.

At no point can I imagine anyone (aside from TCU fans or those with a motive to try to pretend for ratings purposes) actually believing this would be competitive.

Matchups make most games and this was about as poor a matchup as possible.

It is intersesting to me that Kirby has never even flirted with going into the NFL. I don't know what he does would translate very well anyway, but coaches that have his kind of success usually have some buzz around them. I can only remember maybe one rumor, and it was not a serious one.

I hope Kirby does more than flirt with the NFL because JHC on a popsicle stick, the dude is 4-5 years younger than me! He could obliterate Nick Saban's accomplishments and in 20 years, still be younger than Saban is today.

I hope Saban moves on soon because it's almost unfair for there to be an ascending Kirby Smart AND a still pretty powerful Saban out there at the same time.

If FSU and South Carolina ever play in a bowl game, expect blood - at least in the stands. FSU has made a living these past 3 years taking good players from SC and we just got another one - DE Gilber Edmund. That's like 4 or 5 since Norvell came to FSU, all impact players. It started with Keir Thomas and Jammie Robinson, I believe, and we've taken at least 2 this year, and man, SC fans are SALTY.

Is there much interest by NFL teams in college coaches? Especially after Urban and Rhule flamed out spectacularly.

Just feels like there is a pretty big jump to the big leagues and most of these guys are used to coaching with massive talent advantages which they won't have in the NFL.

There have been many college coaches that NFL teams have pursued. There are almost always buzz around college coaches that have success. There were rumors around Dabo after his first championship.

I don't feel so lonely now as I did not watch the game. I honestly forgot about it and checked the score at 17-7 and decided I did not need to see anything else.

Record-low for UGA's 58-point title-game wipeout of TCU - Sports Media Watch

Quote:
As one would reasonably expect, Georgia’s 65-7 obliteration of TCU was the least-watched college football national championship on record.

Monday’s Georgia-TCU College Football Playoff National Championship averaged 17.2 million viewers across the ESPN family of networks, making it the least-watched college football title game in the history of the College Football Playoff and its predecessor the Bowl Championship Series. Ratings were not immediately available.

The Bulldogs’ 58-point beatdown — the largest margin of victory in any bowl game — declined 24% from Georgia-Alabama last year (22.56M). Per Sports TV Ratings, viewership for the game peaked at 22.37 million from 8:30-8:45 PM ET, dropped below 20 million at 9:15 and dwindled to just 10.3 million in the final quarter-hour (10:45-11 PM).

For the second time in three years, the CFP National Championship was not the most-watched game of the season. It trailed both the Georgia-Ohio State (22.45M) and TCU-Michigan (21.70M) semifinals and barely outdrew Michigan-Ohio State in the regular season (17.14M).

The gains for the semifinals canceled out Monday’s sharp decline, helping the full, three-game CFP to a 9% increase over last year (from 18.9M to 20.6M).

(Nielsen estimates from ESPN PR, Sports TV Ratings/Twitter 1.10)

Outside of Jimmy Johnson, has there been a coach in past 40 years that went from college to the NFL and had success? Pete Carroll flamed out with the Jets then went back to college before going to Seattle. I guess Jim Harbaugh could be considered, moving from Stanford to the 49ers.

Bill Walsh went from Stanford to the 49ers. He has been a position coach and OC in the NFL before becoming head coach at Stanford.

You guess? Harbaugh just barely makes it in? Srsly?

SF had 8 straight non-playoff, non-winning seasons right before he showed up. His three years he posted a 29-6 record and took them to a SuperBowl. And he's a borderline "success" case?

Okay then.

I went to a 2nd & Charles on Monday. It's like Barnes and noble but also sells used games, books, music...

Walked through the game section and there were old Genesis copies of Bill Walsh College Football, triple Play, Coach K basketball, NHL, NBA Live... brought back so many memories of middle school me just playing these games on a loop on a 19" tv.

I would have purchased them if I had a genesis and if my wife wouldn't have killed me (so what if I don't actually play the switch, Xbox and hundreds of PC games we have...). Also, the old Genesis they had they wanted $60 for. No chance I'm paying that for an old Sega.

Not sure how you rank teams when everyone plays a vastly different schedule. Also not sure why they bother with post-season polls when there's a playoff. Georgia is #1 - no one could vote against that with any argument that would carry much weight. Michigan failed to beat TCU - being named "#2" afterward, mostly because of the championship margin of victory, would be meaningless.

When the 10-6 Giants beat the 16-0 Patriots in Super Bowl XLII, if a poll was taken afterward, I assume the Patriots would still be #1. And they still wouldn't have the Lombardi trophy. Polls are for when playoffs aren't possible. They take them after the NCAA basketball tournament as well, but I don't think most of us pay much attention.

Then get rid of it because there is no frakking way a team that got beat 65-7 deserves #2. Give it to OSU

OSU lost big to the team that got beat by the team that got demolished! Why should they be #2? And it's not like that loss was in September...

You have the advantage of having looked at this poll. What does "deserve" mean in this argument? Are there awards being given? Money? What could it possibly mean to me, as a Michigan fan, whether they are ranked #2, #3 or #4 at this moment? Georgia is the national champion and every measure of "deserve" I can come up with leads there. And Michigan is the Big Ten champion, similar conclusion. Is there any reason to care about anything else?

That's what everyone said about Michigan until they played. They were over a TD favorite and lost.

The point is,you give the games that are played some meaning/context because every year, you can create a "circle of life" game out of showing that comparing teams based on games they didn't play is a fool's game. And every week, the best team does not always win.

Dola.

And I agree with Jim, post-season rankings are stupid.
