Thanks Canada.

I had to go out for an errand today, didn't leave my car, but it didn't matter, I could really feel it by the time I got home, and everything has a hazy look. Fun.

For a bit of context, it felt like 104 degrees at 1:50pm in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Kentucky has had a weird weather year. Extremely mild winter, and we had less than 5 inches of snow total, and now we're having a really mild summer. Last year at this time, we had 18 90+ degree days. This year, we've had 3 days (although we should get to 4 on Wednesday). If/when the normal temps return, it's gonna suck. I'm about to go mow and it's 84 with low humidity (about 50%).

Yikes on Vermont flooding.

In addition to the rain, the dam is at risk. I'd be holed up in a dry Marriott somewhere.

Vermont braces for catastrophic flooding disaster as dam near to capital Montpelier could FAIL | Daily Mail Online
Quote:
Montpelier is on the brink of disaster as police warn heavy downpours have raised the threat of reservoir water spilling into the already deluged city.

Officials in the rain-ravaged Vermont capital said Wrightsville Dam was six feet away from failure on Monday, and by midday Tuesday this had worsened to just one foot.

So yesterday, Myrtle Beach was predicted to get a lot of storms and rain. But we ended up getting nothing, not even thunder in the distance. A half hour away in the western part of the county wasn't so lucky:

Wow so this flooding in Pennsylvania was crazy. They had 7 inches of rain drop 8n under an hour locally. That is where the people are now missing. Yes totally not climate change related.

One of my all time favorite places to go is to the beach. I have not made it to a beach as of yet this year and it does not look I will be going anytime soon. 90+ degrees water at the beach is crazy. For who? For what?

Yeah, we had more than a couple inches of rain here in MA. Dog hates it. I prefer it to the mugginess we've had the last week.

Good news is that no damage has been found but damn last night was a bit too close for my taste.

At least two trees down on my property, or part of trees. In this case "part" is about a quarter of a VERY large (taller than my house by a good story) tree that missed hitting the house best I can tell by no more than a foot. Part of it now sits atop a wrought iron table on my back patio, if I opened the batcave window I'd be able to touch it.

And had it gone the other direction we'd be short one vehicle.

Sounded like a small war when I went to check what the noise was, could hear multiple tree falls in the vacant lot next door.

Thanks. It was a bit unnerving, made worse by the fact I was dozing when it happened (hey 630p is a perfectly suitable nap time) & woke up to the loud noise not real clear on wth was going on.

My confusion was enough that I thought Will was in the car in the driveway ... when in reality he'd been home for an hour+ and was sound asleep upstairs.

Been a long while since I'd been startled awake by anything & been THAT out of it.

We heard the sirens come on last night. Very strong wind gusts for like 10 mins

No trees down, just a bunch of branches and leaves.

It made a mess in Pickens, Cherokee, Gilmer, Forsyth. My parents still don't have power back yet, I'm seeing quite a few reports of that among my social media contacts in multiple counties as well as roads that are still blocked.

And a new severe TS watch posted until 10p for those same areas now.
(which my kid just happens to be driving through later this evening, having done an errand up near Chattanooga)

Those temperatures reminded me of an article that explained how past a certain temperature, the human body can't cool itself on its own, so I went and found it:

Quote:
Our studies on young healthy men and women show that this upper environmental limit is even lower than the theorized 35 C. It’s more like a wet-bulb temperature of 31 C (88 F). That would equal 31 C at 100% humidity or 38 C (100 F) at 60% humidity.

So, basically Phoenix is technically unlivable now.

Quote:
Keep in mind that these cutoffs are based solely on keeping your body temperature from rising excessively. Even lower temperatures and humidity can place stress on the heart and other body systems. And while eclipsing these limits does not necessarily present a worst-case scenario, prolonged exposure may become dire for vulnerable populations such as the elderly and those with chronic diseases.

Air conditioning, shade, cool drinks, shelter, etc... can allow humans to survive in these conditions, but....

Yeah. Ten months livable is actually not at all livable.

I saw a forecast that thinks the August heat dome is going to be more intense than July.

Yeah but this training that we're getting now will prepare us for our future life in Mars and future generations will write books about how smart and prescient we all were to do it. Because that's how history and the future works.

It is a delightful 83 with low humidity today. We had oppressive/stifling humidity for the past week, so this is a welcome change. At least for a couple of days until the heat and humidity come back.

BBC has some pics of Typhoon Doksuri flooding in China & Philippines.

https://www.bbc.com/news/in-pictures-66400905
Quote:
Storms bearing unusually torrential rain and ferocious winds this early in the north Pacific typhoon season have flooded large swathes of East Asia, with China among the countries worst hit.

In the capital of Beijing alone, the amount of rain over the past week has broken a 140-year-old record.

People in Beijing and neighbouring Hebei province fled their homes on inflatable boats and lorries as Doksuri, a former super typhoon, drenched China's north-east.

At least 10 people have died and 18 are missing, and officials have evacuated millions of people.

The flooding made me wonder about my flood risk.

No idea how reputable the below link is but rated my address as

Quote:
Flood = 1-Minimal
Fire = 1-Minimal
Wind = 4-Moderate (67mph this year)
Heat = 5-Major (7 days over 102F this year)

How likely is Mt Rainier to erupt?

"Based on past history, there is good reason to believe the volcano will erupt again." It cites a 1987 estimate that in any one year there is a 1-in-1,000 chance of an eruption causing significant damage up to 30 miles from Mount Rainier, and a 1-in-10,000 chance of an eruption causing damage beyond that.

Yeah. It got the temps wrong and was giving me flood and fire risk that has no bearing to the area I live in.

36 dead in Maui wildfires.

I'm sure it was fast moving but you'd think there'd be more heads up by the authorities. Wonder where the breakdown was.

Reminds me a bit of what happened to Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge about 6 or 7 years ago. The good thing is, they built back pretty quick.
