Costa Rica will have a huge moral victory if they take this to penalties.

Did a Greek player just take a dive in teh middle of the pitch with no Costa Rican players anywhere near him - like 10 feet away?

You would have to think this favors Greece, but anything can happen now. Greece were looking dominant at the end of normal time in order to gt that goal, a nd maybe they used up their energy, because they were less so in ET.

I don't think there's anything more tense in sports than a penalty shoot out. What poise by Costa Rice on those kicks.

On the other hand Nederlands didn't steal the win. They totally earned it on the field but they can thank the Mexican coach.

Don\'t worry, I'm sure the coach will be humble and admit the decision didn't work out even if he would do it again.

"It seems to me that the reason was the referee, he left us outside the next stage," Herrera said. "If the referee starts marking faults that don't exist and in the end if he invents a penalty of that size you leave the World Cup because of circumstances that are not in your control.

"I repeat, in four matches that we played, in three, I repeat three, we had referees against Mexico," Herrera said. "Two goals against Cameroon, two penalties in one same play against Croatia and today a penalty against us. That at least we expect that the referee will take a look at that and that this gentleman goes home just like us."

Marquez will also take it well;

"It was not a penalty and I didn't touch him," Marquez said of Robben. "He hit me. The referee believed that it was my touch and whistled the penalty. Of the 10 fouls that Robben commits, five are not called and that is not 'fair play.'"

OK, you did not touch him, but he hit you. Ummmm, that means you touched him I think.

No team can be as psychotic as Uruguay, but Mexico looks like they are on their way to a second place slot for the bitching, whining World Cup.

Wasn't that Costa Rica about 5 feet off the line before the Greek player even got to the ball for the kick on the one that he saved? Thought that wasn't legal?

It's technically not legal. They allowed Brazil to stop two shots that way yesterday too, so at least FIFA is consistently not calling them in the WC so far.

I honestly think they both sound like they have potential to be either really entertaining or real snoozefests. I guess I'd assume France-Nigeria might be the closer game/the one where their two styles will mesh together, since although Algeria has been great fun to watch when they play wide-open, I think against Germany they might have trouble playing that wide-open style.

I can see France-Nigeria just turning into a wide-open 3-2 style game.

I'll probably start with France-Nigeria and see how it goes.

France - Nigeria is the better game, but Germany - Algeria could be epically historical if Algeria wins due to the lingering pall of 1982 over that team matchup.

BTW, I want Nigeria to win, badly, as a way to help unite the country after these bombings.

I am of course rooting for France and on the other game I think Germany will win so we can have a France-Germany 1/4 final that promises to be epic !

But first, beat Nigeria !

Well, teh good thing about France winning is if Algeria wins (PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE) it will set up an odd/awkward matchup with that for political reasons.

France pretty well dominated that second half. The goal seemed to completely destroy Nigeria and the game pretty much died from there.

That was a solid win for France !!!

Re Algeria or Germany. We already had massive issues when Algeria qualified out of the pools and a France-Algeria quarterfinal will be "hot" security wise in France.

True true.

I hope Algeria wins for a few reasons today:

1). No North African Team has ever made it past the Group of 16. Algeria, 2014 seems like a good time to do it!
2). Revenge for 1982 against Germany
3). Because an Algeria/France quarter Final match is just odd to think about and fun to consider. It's be like a Mexico-Spain match or a Russia-Ukraine match. It has interesting political dynamics.
