Big Chicken has convinced you of this. I actually looked it up and I guess it's because turkeys are much bigger and slower to cook. Chickens are sort of the perfect size. Kind of makes sense why it's used in lunch meat. |

This is definitely why I don't do turkey at home that often. A full Turkey is way too much meat, and even a breast is more than we can eat before it goes bad. Last edited by GrantDawg : 10-31-2024 at 02:54 PM. |

10 years, every medical profession will have stories like this. Private offices are being bought out by venture capital firms, and their main goal is profits. Dentist, Opticians, even Vets, are being bought out and pushed into selling harc everything they can. |

Just as example: There is an opthomolgist office locally that is famous for prescribing cataract surgeries for patience either way too early or sometimes when they have no cataracts at all. The main doctor was caught at one point and was fined by Medicare, yet she just continues to practice and still does it. Her profits are well worth the fines it seems.

Anyone have any cheesy horror movie ritual watches on Halloween? I make sure to watch Halloween III Season of the Witch each year. It's completely different from the Michael Myers movies and it's terrible. So terrible it's good.

I was away from this board for a few years, but based on the age demographic here, I'm guessing this has been covered, but - does it seem like there's been a shift in trick or treating? In the 80s, kids would go to each house and ring the bell, and now, kids don't even bother going to a house unless there's someone waiting there.

Yeah, I’ve seen that. Also many kids who just stick their bag out w/o really saying anything.
Of course, as the person giving out the candy, I much prefer just sitting out there. There’s no point getting up and going back to the door every couple of minutes. Yeah, maybe it’s not as fun for kids as ringing the bell (er, not that we have a working bell) and maybe it does train them not to knock, but especially with pets it’s easier to just stay outside.

We sit outside and let them pick 2 or 3 from a cauldron.

Some neighbors sit outside but we don’t have any issues with kids knocking or ringing doorbell.
Tonight was fun. Not as many as in the 00’s but still enough enthusiastic trick or treaters. We had about 100 bags ready, about 20 left. |

Yeah, we had other decoration junk in our cauldron and I spotted some baggies that we had from years ago; rather than explaining something like “take four” to either kids who are too young (or otherwise non-verbal) to understand, or to kids who would just take a handful anyway, or pick four Reese’s and leave the Jolly Rancher lollipops, I figured I would just make equitable bags. (Yeah, you could say that bigger kids could handle more candy, but whatever.) Did get what bags I had made up wiped out by one huge group — had the exact amount. Thankfully I had more candy in reserve. That group included one lady who must have been in her 70s, too. (Not in costume, but she wasn’t alone in that. Some of the kids just went around in t-shirts and sweats, the lazy bastards.)

When we lived in the burbs we literally had hundreds of trick or treaters. We since moved. Last night we had 22. I know because I bought a 30 pack of candy bars from Costco and had 8 left. I was out there for about 90 minutes.
I think the main problem we have is that 2/3 of the houses on our street don't participate. And the sidewalk only goes through maybe a 1/4 of the neighborhood even though there's plenty of kids. Also, in their infinite wisdom, the city took down all the light polls on the street about 5 months ago and haven't put up new ones. Between that and the proliferation of trunk or treat, kids just don't really do Halloween the way we did back in the day. Also, the costumes were shit this year. Parents, put in some effort. |

We live in the burbs, and we had two. 200+ house subdivision, two trick-or-treaters. What is happening in this area is there are just a handful of places where everyone goes, and everywhere else gets nothing. The subdivision across the street has hundreds of people. In town, main street gets several hundred, and the next street over gets none. Been that way for the last 5-6 years.

I live in a 400+ house subdivision. In the 00's a ton of trick of treaters and in mid-2010s, there was a noticeable decline on our street.
Demographics, the kids near us grew up. The new part of the subdivision is getting most of the kids now. Told my wife for the next house, I'd like to recreate that. Move into a new subdivision with a bunch of young families and have a bunch of young kids around us (vs living in an "active adult" neighborhood). |

I'd say we had about 2 dozen, which was down from last year, but last year the weather was gorgeous and this year it was really, really windy and about 40 degrees.

We had plenty, especially considering that we had our first rain system since Helene conveniently come through between 5 and 9pm.
We ended up with a small amount of candy left, which suits me just fine. I don't need the temptation as I try to maintain my weight loss going into hibernation/fat storage season.

We had less than usual, which is weird because it was beautiful. The kids we did have were also on the older side. Very few younger ones and we live is a pretty big neighborhood.

We had the most trick or treaters we've had in the 4 years we've lived here. Which is 4 families stopping by. That doubled our previous record. My wife lives for this too. She gets so excited whenever we get them.

Have the exact opposite problem here. For whatever reason the ~1 mile stretch of road I live on has become Halloween central not only for our town but even towns that don't border us. People literally drive to our street from other towns and each year we get more. There were easily 500+ kids yesterday. As much as I enjoy Halloween the sheer number of people is getting overwhelming and sucking the fun out if.

We had a decent number but it definitely feels like it's changed. I think parents and kids are more weery. There are a lot of scary posts on the Nextdoor app from angry homeowners that would give me pause about sending my kids around. Seems like it was more fun to be a kid 30 years ago.

This is cool. Much smaller scale, but when we acquired a company a few years ago, the 3 owners put aside a few hundred thousand dollars for employee bonuses as well.

Doesn't the fact that Travis Kelce is dating Taylor Swift make it objectively incorrect to call him a fa$%ot?

When dealing with digital pictures, more is not better.
Wife and I talked about going through our years of pics that we just put into folders (yyyy-mm-dd) and deleting all the duplicates/junk. And we're dreading it ... It gets to a point where there's too much for someone (e.g. kids after we pass) to go through. Quality over quantity. |

Why is it so hard for people to keep their dogs from running into the street. This dog at a particular house has run out to attack my dog while we were on a walk 4-5 times the past month. It appears the owners just let it roam around or are too lazy to close the gate on their front porch. This time it came so fast I had to pick my dog up by the leash cause I could get my hand under him because I might be bitten.
I don't want to have to risk hurting the dog, but it just tears out. It nearly was run over last week because it ran at my dog. A few weeks ago we saw it and turned around and it just followed us while we walked to main, busy street. I know my dog is a dick, but he's literally never interacted with this dog except to have it dart out after him. |

I carry pepper spray 100% of the time for both my runs and my dog walks. I've had to use it once, on a run. It got the job done and I hope the owner learned a lesson from it.

Unfortunately, most of my dog bites have come from inside peoples houses. No matter how many times I ask people to put dogs up, people still leave them out with the afore mentioned "They have never bit anyone". They don't understand that having stranger come into the house and do strange things, with what often looks like a weapon or even worse to a dog, a vacuum, might cause the dog to get aggressive.

Nothing better than an unleashed dog (in a clearly marked on-leash area) barreling down at you, as the owner screams "He's friendly!"
People who walk their dogs unleashed as some sort of flex are the worst.

I think I've asked you this before, so apologies. Have you notice a pattern on the breed/type of dog? I assume maybe Rottweiler, Pitt Bull or German Shepard but have there been dogs that surprised you on how aggressive they were? e.g. Golden Retriever or Lab? You know, that will be a darn good stocking stuffer for my wife. She runs a lot. Last edited by Edward64 : Today at 03:57 PM. |

Nope. The bigger dog owners actually put them up, so I rarely get corner in the house with them. I honestly would refuse service on a house with a loose Rotty or a German Shepherd no matter how friendly they claim they are. As for pitts, most are actually super friendly. If not, the owner doesn't even try to let me in the house while they are loose. It is the smaller dogs (thankfully) I have mostly been bit by. edit: There was one Lab, but that was outside and he actually jumped up ever a fence and got me. I always put my dog up. He wouldn't bite because he's too scared to get close to someone else, but he barks and growls. I even put him up for when I expect a delivery. I tell them to leave it on the porch anyway, but no wants to be dropping something off and having a dog crash into the door.
Also, I've been working insurance the last 3 years and one of clients is for delivery services. The top 2 causes of claims are by far dog bites and car accidents the amount of dog bites I've seen are astounding. Everyone's dog is perfect until they aren't, so even my guy gets treated as suspect. |

The number of people who tell me "I just don't have a way to put up my dog" is just astounding. How do you own a dog and not have a way to put it up?
