Curious Case of Benjamin Button - 7/10. Actually went to a theatre, first time in years. My wife wanted to see this and I thought of making a date out of it. Fascinating, well-done movie that really dragged. But like Gump, you think "how did they do that?" and that was cool. One of the rare movies that I felt really captured a sense of place and time.

Barely at all. Aside from the place of birth (IIRC), the Father's name, and the backwards aging thing.

Wall-E (7 out of 10) - I'm usually one of those people that loves most critically acclaimed movies. For some reason, this one just didn't click right with me. The animation is great, no denying that, but outside of that it's just another Disney movie to me. It was good, but don't think it belongs in the talks for Best Picture.

Saw V: 7/10 - Saw IV was the worst in the series, but Saw V was great and back to the gore fest we've come to expect from the Saw series. The opening was superb!

From what little I've read at IMDB and Wiki, the original was set in Baltimore but the movie was set in NO to take advantage of cheap filming costs and for Pitt to give back. Also, apparently Fitzgerald had the newborn a 5' 8" old man, or something like that.

Zack and Miri make a porno: 7/10. i don't normally laugh at comedies, but i was very surprised at how well done this was. Justin Long makes a cameo that was very funny. nice story. nudity (schlong and tits).

I agree with some of the earlier comments that this movie sticks with you after seeing it.

However, I disagree with a couple of things Imran wrote. I can think of about an hour they could cut and still capture the beauty and essense of the movie. Also, I disagree with the impact Ben and Daisy had on each other. There were certainly some of that but there wasn't much depth to it. For example, how could they get out of their minds during their love life of Ben knowing Daisy as a young girl? Or Daisy knowing Ben as an old man? You would almost have to block that part out and just go to a present infactuation.

Technically, it seems that the rate of aging (for both Ben and Daisy) was very inconsistent. Pre-WW2 and during WW2, it looks like Ben was getting younger rapidly (i.e., very noticeable changes in just a couple of years). But after the war, it seems likee he never regressed (got much younger) for 20 years (during the time Brad Pitt was just Brad Pitt - 1950s to 1970s). Also, to my eyes, Daisy apparently did not age much at all during those same 20 or so years. I haven't seen a chart matching their ages and the years to see if the math was right.

Eagle vs Shark - 9/10

Laughed for pretty much the entire movie. Flight of the Conchords meets Napolean Dynamite is the best way I can describe it. I'm interested to see if anyone else has seen it and what they thought of it. Highly recommended.

Max Payne (6/10) -- Was better than I had heard it was going to be but definitely nothing stellar. Felt like they ripped the plot from Batman Begins. (I've never played the game so maybe it was their plot to start with)

Personally I think it would lose a lot with substantial cuts. It's meant to be an sweeping epic.

Cloverfield (8/10) -- Liked it a lot.....however, I wish there would have been at least some info/hint as to where the thing came from. Perhaps there were things that I just didn't pick up on.

Mindless but fairly entertaining for what it was. Would have worked better as a 2-hour premiere leading into a show on the Sci Fi Channel.

Juno (8.5/10) - one of the few movies that lived up to the hype. I thought it was a great story, with solid acting.

The Cincinnati Kid - 7/10

Steve McQueen plays the titular "kid," an ace poker play from New Orleans in this 1965 classic. Edward G. Robinson plays opposite McQueen as the veteran "best there ever was" that everyone wants to play. Karl Malden, Rip Torn and Ann Margaret are very good in supporting roles. I've been watching a lot of McQueen's films lately and I liked this one a lot more than "The Getaway" but it still doesn't touch my favorite McQueen film "Bullitt."

Wall-E 7/10 -I really liked this, but it was just a TAD too predictible to get into the upper echelons of scores. Amazing animation and an incredible job of making me care about machines that can't really talk.

College Road Trip - 6/10

I thought it was overall enjoyable, but I'm a Raven Symone fan. Martin Lawrence plays an overprotective father who goes on a road trip with Raven Symone's character as they visit colleges.

Don't know if you saw this or not, but in the final scene (the one with the two lovers at Coney Island that happened days/weeks before the monster showed up), in the background of one of the shots you can see a large meteor or something fall from the sky and splash into the ocean. The implication is one of two things:

1) The monster came from space, and the splash was from its spaceship.

Or:

2) It was a meteor that hit the water. When it hit, it disturbed some creature that was sleeping / lived at the bottom of the sea.

Then all hell broke lose.

The general sense of that being the source of the monster seems to be correct from what most people have been saying. But the running opinion I have seen since the movie came out had to do with the viral campaign that was run with the movie's promotion.

One alternative is that it's a satellite (not a meteor), you see crashing into the ocean. And that searching for the satellite dredged up the ocean floor and led to this long hidden, hibernating monster to come out.

The other, from the viral campaign, is that the company the main protagonist is about to work for, which markets some new really popular drink (Slusho, I think, is the name), uses some exotic substance it farms from deep ocean floors, and that it is that dredging that wakes the monster up (although that doesn't explain the satellite/meteor/ocean crash/etc.).

No I didn't see that...I kept looking for something like that at the start of the movie that I completely dropped the ball at the end. Crap! I'll have to take a look again at some point.

It's hard to see actually. I had to go real slomo on the DVD to find it. I think you would only see it in the theater if you knew exactly where to look, or if yo uhappened to be looking at the very right spot.

Call of Cthulhu - 8/10

Really well done indie movie. Shot in "Mythoscope", which is a made-up term that basically means in the style of a 1920s silent film, right down to film artifacts, text cards, and over-acting, which fits the subject matter absolutely perfectly. By FAR the most faithfully accurate film adaptation of a Lovecraft story. Only 47 minutes long, but again, that's not really a problem given the style of the movie.

Just as interesting was the "making of" feature. The director was a props guy for some biggish films (Galaxy Quest, Scream 3, What Lies Beneath) and it was very interesting to see how they filmed what they did with such a limited budget. There are a ton of scenes involving boats, the ocean, massive stone structures, etc. and they did a pretty amazing job with these, all things considered.

Wall-E (7/10) -- Visually awesome, personalities given to robots awesome, movie plot okay, but overall I don't think it was as great as many have thrown it out to be. I think as a kid's movie, it falls pretty short as most of the movie will be over an 8 year olds head.

Pride and Glory -- (5/10) -- I love Ed Norton and felt he brought a decent effort in this but Colin Farrel overacted everything. Jon Voight was blah. The other brother in the movie who I have seen in other things was very good and he and Norton played well off of each other. Them solo or together was where the movie exceled. The movie drags quite a bit but then has it's moments. I think most would walk away disappointed but have many places where they would think some changes could have made it a great movie.

No Country For Old Men - 8/10

I get why many hated the end, but i can honestly say I never had a chance to take a breath and figure out what the movie was really about until the end, and suddenly I thought, "wait. that's it? ohhhhh!"

The Wrestler: 7/10

I was actually slightly dissapointed. Though I can't remember ever being as giddy as I was when the movie started, so perhaps my expectations were too high. As a wrestling fan, it was surreal to see a packed theater of all types of people seeing and listening to references to blading, "heat", "going over", etc. So it was very fun to see that stuff, and this business, portrayed on the screen is such a competent manner. But outside of the "shock value" of violence, drugs, and the way the wrestling industry spits out humanity, there wasn't much of a story here. Since I was already well aquainted with the "broken down old wrestler" storyline, there was no shock value in any of that. It was just like an introduction to the wrestling world, but no real developed stories coming out of that world. The movie tried to get by on the world itself. Which was effective, but not anything higher than 7/10 effective, to me.

Frost/Nixon: 9/10

While I was dissapointed by the Wrestler, this one shattered my expectations. I knew it would be "good", but I didn't expect to love it.

I love the book, and I am a big fan of Neil Gaiman, but this movie rendition felt too slow for the first 2/3 and then too quick at the end. Saw it in 3D, which wasn't anything spectacular. To judge from the previews, though, it seems that this is the year for 3D movies.

This was a bit of a disappointment. Same director as Requiem for a Dream and it was shot similarly which I really enjoyed, but there was no substance. The story is about a mathematician who's obsessed with numbers and patterns and looks for patterns for Wall Street.

Felt very Indana Jonesish. Puzzles to solve, treasures to find, same 'ol stuff. It's watchable but some stuff was predictable.

It was watchable but it didn't feel the same without one of the main characters from the series.

This movie's hard to rate for me. It's one of those movies that has an element that I really, really like (which is film style) the black and white, the grittiness, even the shaky cam didn't bother me; but I guess after watching the awesomeness that was Requiem for a Dream, I was expecting more of a story. I really enjoyed the Hasidic Jews though.

Been lurking around here enough lately (in this thread and others), figure it's about time I started contributing something again. My sister and her husband bought me a Netflix subscription for Christmas, and I have been going hog-wild with the movies lately as a result (got the two-at-a-time subscription).

Invasion (6.5 / 10)

In case anyone here is unaware, this is basically a re-make / re-imagining of Invasion of the Body Snatchers. I thought the first two-thirds of the movie were quite well done, and it did a good job of capturing the creepiness of the 1978 movie (I've never seen the original 1956 production). Nicole Kidman was quite good (and somewhere along the way, she grew breasts. Yay for tight sweaters. ). But unfortunately the writer/director felt the need to turn it into a half-assed thriller for the final one-third. Overall it was enjoyable, but I was left feeling rather disappointed.

Pretty mindless entertainment if you ask me. Hayden Christensen was serviceable, and Samuel L. Jackson continued his recent trend of compensating for shallow roles by playing them over-the-top. But I couldn't help but feel like there was much more story to be told here. There's no explanation at all as to who the Jumpers really are (and why their opponents, the Paladins, hate them so much), no sense of history. Just a brief mention by one of the characters that the conflict has been going on since the middle ages. But the action sequences are good, and you should be entertained, so long as you check your brain at the door.

I tried to watch Sideways but I turned it off halfway through. Does that make it a 0/10? I seem to remember people going back and forth about it in the earlier parts of this thread - while I've chosen my side of the fence. Incredibly slow and lacked anything to sink my teeth into deep enough to spend any more time on it.

I really like Sideways. I went to the cinema to watch something else that ended up being sold out, so we saw Sideways instead, not knowing anything about it - the hype, who was in it, what it was about, etc.

It was a little uncomfortable however as I went to see it with a good friend of mine and his girlfriend, and the two main characters were so much like me and my buddy that it isn't funny - especially my buddy, who not only acts but even LOOKS like that dude from Ned & Stacey.

Based on a true story, a high school girl's basketball coach takes over The TExas Western Miners and recruits the best possible players regardless of their skin color.

Pretty amazing story, Don Haskins changed the sport and made history.

Zack and Miri Make a Porno - 7.5/10

Lots of LOL moments. I didn't realize Kevin Smith directed the movie, but it made sense when I found out. Lots of raunchiness, but also, very sweet moments.

Casino Royale (8 / 10): I actually saw this when it was in the theaters, but I was a bit distracted at the time (first date ), so I thought I'd give it another look. I remember being a bit skeptical at first when I heard that they were re-imagining James Bond, since I thought that Pierce Brosnan had done a pretty good job. But overall I found it quite enjoyable. Daniel Craig does a good job as a more "modern" James Bond, with a harder edge to him and a darker outlook. The story itself was pretty good as well, and is a happy change from the typical "James Bond saves the world" theme we usually see. Overall well done, and I look forward to seeing Quantum of Solace when it comes out on DVD.

I watched it on HBO On Demand the other day. While the plot is a bit confusing at times, it's a fun action movie as long as you don't take it too seriously. It does put a lot of the video game elements in the movie, which is fun to see for those who have played the Hitman games.

My 2 little brain cells couldn't wrap themselves around the whole concept of wormholes and the physics involved with time travel, but it was highly entertaining. This is one of those movies where we have to pay attention to everything happening or we'll miss something.

On Deja Vu, I liked it, even though the movie made a lot of (probably necessary) difficult leaps of pseudo-scientific "logic".

Then again, other than Devil in a Blue Dress, I can't think of any Denzel movie I've ever seen that I didn't like. So maybe Deja Vu sucked. Idunno.

Gran Torino - 8.5/10

Never has a racist character been so likable. Clint Eastwood was of course awesome as always. I was gonna rate this movie a 9 but I had an issue with some of the characters' acting... Ant thinks otherwise, but we definitely agree on the same character. Some of Clint's lines just made me shake my head, my favorite was "Just leave my dog alone".

Eagle Eye - 7.5/10

Jerry and Rachel get phonecalls from a woman who is monitoring their every move and if they don't listen, they will reap the consequences. It sort of reminded me of iRobot.

Wading my way through the Best Picture nominees, so far:

Frost/Nixon 9/10 -- Narrowly my favorite so far. I have friends who find it dull, but I found the back and forth between the two to be fascinating. Good acting and writing all around, but Langella is fantastic as Nixon.

Slumdog Millionaire 8.5/10 -- I get why it's the favorite to win. Great pace and I love the way Boyle lets the story unfold. Didn't know a thing going in so it was more violent than I expected, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. For me the story, although good, was just a tad below Frost/Nixon.

Milk 8/10 -- Sean Penn is amazing. I never once thought "hey, I'm watching Sean Penn play Harvey Milk". Easily Best Actor from what I've seen so far. This would be my top pick, but it felt to me that there was too much story crammed into too small a timeframe and as a result the supporting cast, while excellent, was not developed enough and I think the story somewhat suffers as a result.

Still to see before next weekend: Benjamin Button, Reader, Doubt and something else Ms.Path has mentioned and that I forget right now.....going to be a busy movie week.
