But that doesn't mean that they're doing things right. They've put themselves in a spot now where they have diminishing development costs due to the fact that they're selling two old systems. But most would point out that they're missing a lot of opportunities to increase their sales right now.

Super Mario, Pokemon, Zelda and all of the titles associated with them are absolute gold mines.

The technology is without question old. It was outdated when released.

Now some might say that allowed them to make money right off the bat, but it's an opportunity lost IMO. Even the PS4 was released at a price point where they made something from the very start despite being good technology when released.

I don't get why there isn't more Metroid. Prime III was the last console game we got. It's my favorite video game series of all time. I'll buy a Wii U when I get a new Metroid game.

It isn't the hardware. It's the name that sunk WiiU. Wii had the same thing going on; underpowered hardware and low dev support. Then it sold a shit ton and the devs fell over themselves to release something, anything. WiiU's name confused the blue ocean market into thinking they didn't need the new hardware for the new games.

That's the most ... marvelous f'n thing I've ever seen. The potential of simply the addition of (re)construct-your-own settlement. There's at least two full games within one right there. This might very well be the literal last game I ever need.

One question: there's a game -- one of the Dragon Age series maybe? -- where you "build" houses in a somewhat similar way. I know it's something pre-industrial 'cause swords & stuff. I think its just a lot further from done than it needs to be to be shown at E3. The developer says its been in development for a year, and my guess is that it will be at least another year before this game comes out if it does come out. There is more to come tomorrow apparently from the unreal 4 youtube page. I understand that it seems like a pipe dream now, but I don't think Joe Montana would just attach his name or allow his name to be used or tweet things about a game that has no hope of ever being released.

I don't think this is vaporware at all, but I do think it is a lot further from release than I and some others expected. We'll see what comes of it eventually, I guess. I will likely join the non believers by this time next year if meaningful progress is not made.

I think we're splitting hairs here, though it was my fault I didn't clarify my statement further to avoid the usual banter. The unit was profitable at launch from a cost/price of parts perspective. You are correct that marketing and other costs pushed that cost above the retail price number at launch as this article notes.

And Research and Development would be a huge cost. I'm not sure anyone outside of Sony really knows the numbers on these things. Then I doubt retailers were actually paying $399 per console at launch.

My concern is that this will set back the development of a competitor for Madden quite a bit. Damon Grow is like the Richard Hendricks of game PR.

Haha, I'm not delusional, I was hopeful. I still have the absolute slightest shred of interest in the game to see what comes of it, but the dreams of seeing something significant, seeing some of the reasoning behind leading people on about the scope of the game.. Well that has proven to be a dream indeed.

I do have this gambling theory though.. Its about doubling your bet every time so that you always eventually come out on top..

I'm not. It is easily the most complex sport to simulate and probably costs a fair amount to develop even if you already have the base gameplay engine in place.

It isn't a market for a start up or a company looking to make back its development costs quickly. Then you have the fact that it seems buyers are only interested in games that simulate the NFL and to a lesser extent, the NCAA.

Honestly, even without exclusivity, I'm not sure how long the NFL2K series could have survived. Lots of people bought at $20, but I'm not sure how many of those folks would've stuck around at a $50 or $60 price point, beyond die-hards.

The show felt like a downer. Not a lot of new stuff coming out. Mostly sequels and re-hashes. Like a new Fallout will be cool, but I was hoping some new titles would be talked about.

The only thing that got me excited besides the Fallout announcement was the trailer for Kingdom Come: Deliverance.

Maybe it had something to do with so much focus on virtual reality stuff that I just haven't had much interest in so far.
