I'm confused. They're doing something right currently?

But that doesn't mean that they're doing things right. They've put themselves in a spot now where they have diminishing development costs due to the fact that they're selling two old systems. But most would point out that they're missing a lot of opportunities to increase their sales right now.

You consider the Wii U old. They don't.

I think a mistake we make is thinking they are trying to compete with PS & XBox. They're just making money.

Super Mario, Pokemon, Zelda and all of the titles associated with them are absolute gold mines.

They have little to worry about.

The technology is without question old. It was outdated when released.

Now some might say that allowed them to make money right off the bat, but it's an opportunity lost IMO. Even the PS4 was released at a price point where they made something from the very start despite being good technology when released.

I'm not a big Nintendo guy, but they are clearly aiming at something different than Sony and Xbox. And it paid off nicely for them with the Wii.

+1

I don't get why there isn't more Metroid. Prime III was the last console game we got. It's my favorite video game series of all time. I'll buy a Wii U when I get a new Metroid game.

In my office...

No, they still incurred a per unit loss at launch. Why do you insist to keep making easily disprovable claims?

I'm getting slow in my old age. I didn't notice the double entendre in the name of the new South Park game until just now.

Another new JRPG series announced from Square Enix. They're definitely scratching the JRPG itch of late. Love to see all these new games coming out.

1) WELCOME TO THE ENTIRE HISTORY OF NINTENDO EVER*

*offer not valid in 1996

Seriously that's what they do. Mature tech they can sell cheaply and at a profit and laugh all the way to the bank on software.

2) incorrect, as others have pointed out. Sony lost money on the hardware. Just much, much, much less than with PS3.

It isn't the hardware. It's the name that sunk WiiU. Wii had the same thing going on; underpowered hardware and low dev support. Then it sold a shit ton and the devs fell over themselves to release something, anything. WiiU's name confused the blue ocean market into thinking they didn't need the new hardware for the new games.

I agree on the name. What was Nintendo thinking there? But even with the mistakes, the company is still making money and I thought that was the whole point?

Man, can we keep to E3 instead of turning this thread into a pissing contest on whether or not Nintendo does the right thing?

They're making profits. As far as they're concerned they're doing the right thing. It doesn't matter what we think from that point on.

One question: there's a game -- one of the Dragon Age series maybe? -- where you "build" houses in a somewhat similar way. I know it's something pre-industrial 'cause swords & stuff. But you get blueprints, choose which types of rooms & additions you'll add on to the basic house, etc. But what the hell game am I thinking of here? I'm drawing a total blank beyond those details.

Yeah this I am so looking forward too . Never liked the other Fallouts but this one being from Boston has me excited to get .

I mean it wasn't even mentioned at E3 so not sure why we would expect otherwise. Seems like something that is a developers pipe dream.

I think its just a lot further from done than it needs to be to be shown at E3. The developer says its been in development for a year, and my guess is that it will be at least another year before this game comes out if it does come out. There is more to come tomorrow apparently from the unreal 4 youtube page. I understand that it seems like a pipe dream now, but I don't think Joe Montana would just attach his name or allow his name to be used or tweet things about a game that has no hope of ever being released.

I don't think this is vaporware at all, but I do think it is a lot further from release than I and some others expected. We'll see what comes of it eventually, I guess. I will likely join the non believers by this time next year if meaningful progress is not made.

I think we're splitting hairs here, though it was my fault I didn't clarify my statement further to avoid the usual banter. The unit was profitable at launch from a cost/price of parts perspective. You are correct that marketing and other costs pushed that cost above the retail price number at launch as this article notes.

And Research and Development would be a huge cost. I'm not sure anyone outside of Sony really knows the numbers on these things. Then I doubt retailers were actually paying $399 per console at launch.

Well, I guess I'll wipe my ass with the dream of Montana football. Its not vaporware, its a mobile game. Might as well be vaporware.

My concern is that this will set back the development of a competitor for Madden quite a bit. Damon Grow is like the Richard Hendricks of game PR.

Haha, I'm not delusional, I was hopeful. I still have the absolute slightest shred of interest in the game to see what comes of it, but the dreams of seeing something significant, seeing some of the reasoning behind leading people on about the scope of the game.. Well that has proven to be a dream indeed.

I do have this gambling theory though.. Its about doubling your bet every time so that you always eventually come out on top..

It's incredible to me that we have come to a point where only one video game is being made each year for the most popular sport in the country.

Wouldn't an NCAA game featuring thousands of former NCAA players work? Lemme run the option with Tommie Frazier, I'm sure he'd welcome a low 4figure amount for his likeness.

I'm not. It is easily the most complex sport to simulate and probably costs a fair amount to develop even if you already have the base gameplay engine in place.

It isn't a market for a start up or a company looking to make back its development costs quickly. Then you have the fact that it seems buyers are only interested in games that simulate the NFL and to a lesser extent, the NCAA.

Honestly, even without exclusivity, I'm not sure how long the NFL2K series could have survived. Lots of people bought at $20, but I'm not sure how many of those folks would've stuck around at a $50 or $60 price point, beyond die-hards.

Figure 60 teams. 10 players each.600 players x 5,000 = 3,000,000 annually ...if you could get them for 5k and only 10 players per team...

The show felt like a downer. Not a lot of new stuff coming out. Mostly sequels and re-hashes. Like a new Fallout will be cool, but I was hoping some new titles would be talked about.

The only thing that got me excited besides the Fallout announcement was the trailer for Kingdom Come: Deliverance.

Maybe it had something to do with so much focus on virtual reality stuff that I just haven't had much interest in so far.
