Bill Russell, RIP.

The Bill Simmons book does a great job of pointing out just how good he was. Well, that and the 11 freaking titles he won.

Plus 2 NCAA titles, and a gold medal. And he never lost a winner-take all game (22-0)

For a sports culture that loves rings, I always felt he was underrated as a player. I was happy to see he began to get some of the respect he deserved later in life. That does not even begin to touch on everything he did and was off the court.

My favorite stat.

Bill Russell was 22-0 in winner-take-all-games.

At USF, his '55 team was 5-0 in the tourney on the way to the title.

At USF, his '56 team was 4-0 in the tourney on the way to the title.

In the '56 Olympics, the US squad was 2-0 when it came to the winner-take-all final 4 for gold after the group stage.

In the NBA, the Celtics were famously 10-0 in Games 7's throughout his career. He also won Game 5 of the 1966 East semifinals best of 5 series against Oscar Robertson's Cincinnati Royals.

Kevin Garnett and Bill Russell Interview - YouTube

"But if you don't (win a championship), but I see you play the way you should play.. I'll share one of mine with you." -- Bill Russell to Kevin Garnett

nevermind this was speaking to someone who made 80 times what he did (at his peak) at the time (100K for Russell vs 8 Million that year for KG). That shows what kind of PERSON Bill Russell was.

Vin Scully is the reason I prefer listening to baseball on the radio even if I am watching the game on TV. The way he described the national game of the week on TV led me to seek out the radio broadcast of Braves games when I was a kid. He came across as the personification of kindness and class. RIP

RIP Vin Scully.

I hope to age as gracefully - both mentally and physically - as he did. The guy roled with the changes he saw in his lifetime and never appeared to be a grumpy old 60-90 year old shaking his angry fist at the clouds like many people do.

Okay, this got me a little teary. I got to meet her when I lived in AL and worked for Orkin in the mid 80's. She and her sister had a Koala Blue clothing store in LA and she gave me one of the highlights of my then 22 years on this earth right before Christmas in 1985. I had finished treating the store and was getting my paper work signed and she came up, wished my Merry Christmas and gave me a peck on the cheek. I floated out of that damn store and will never forget that moment LOL. She was seriously so sweet and down to earth, beautiful inside and out.

I once worked with a guy that had a blood feud with Len Dawson Jr. He claimed to have gotten into several fist fights with him. He'd turn red with rage at the mere mention of the younger Dawson.

That's close to as recent as I go with movies, but I'll always remember Robbie Coltrane from Nuns on the Run.

Jerry Lee Lewis was dead earlier this afternoon, but he's now back to not being non-dead.

Apparently the announcement of his death was a hoax that all the press bought.
