Listen, if you want 2oz of straight booze just ask for a fucking double. Don't be a prissy ass and go all "make it a vodka martini dusty with flavor" If you do that I will probably grab the broom from the closet, shove it up your ass till the bristles come out yer mouth and drizzle the vodka over your spasming corpse. |

It's such an amazing time to be a beer drinker. When you think about the options they had even 20 years ago v. now. I guess that's true with a lot of food and beverages though.

So what do you guys think now that I'm in my late twenties I've calmed down on my drinking a lot. I don't feel an urge to drink but I sure like to. Is having drinks 3 times a week way too much at this age?

Depends on how many drinks you have and whether the drinking negatively effects your life. As far as I've read, the threshold that will damage your liver is an average of approximately 4-6 drinks a day (for men), or a little less if you're drinking daily. It varies by person of course, but that's the general baseline I think. I looked into that recently when a co-worker's son died of cirrhosis of the liver at 30, I kind of wanted to know how much you had to drink to get to that point so soon. 2-3 drinks spread out three days a week is probably good for your circulatory system. A little more than that and you're probably good, heavy drinkers are doing much more than that. 6+ 3 times a week, you're definitely in danger territory. And that just seems like a ton to me, until I hear stories about what heavy drinkers are actually throwing down. As for age, whatever, it's just a different deal. When you're older, it's more occasional, and you're buying more expensive stuff, you have a different appreciation for it. Last edited by molson : 04-23-2013 at 08:43 PM. |

I used to work with a guy who was a recovering alcoholic. He told me once he would drink a minimum of 4 cases of beer in a weekend. Would put a case down in the morning, sleep, wake up, put another one down, and do it again the next day.

That's crazy, including from a calorie perspective - even if that's light beer, it's over 5,000 calories on a weekend day just in beer. How are all super alcoholics not 500 pounds? Often they're super-skinny. Perhaps the booze is just straight-up replacing food. |

Drinking 18 year old scotch tonight.
Why? Celebrating a life lesson. I am 40 years old. I had dreams. They are all dead. Dead dead dead. Fuck pipe dreams. They made me overlook what I had in my life and I pissed everything away. Here's the short story. I am from Detroit. I want very much for Detroit to once again be a world class city. At the beginning of 2000 I moved to NYC after a number of visits where I really enjoyed the city. Frankly, I love cities. Tall buildings and dense populations are something that just sits right with me. When I moved to NYC I figured I'd be there 3-5 years, then head back to Detroit. That turned into over a decade. In that time I had a relationship fail partially due to the fact that I looked to move back home. In a way I felt that if I didn't go back it was all for naught. I even met another outstanding woman a few years ago that the #1 reason it went no where was a few months in she sat me down & asked what becomes of "us" if I were to get a job back home (I had been open about my search.) "We'll see where we're at" wasn't a good response. I quit two jobs I felt I was just spinning my wheels back & moved back with no job. Got a couple part-time jobs with no real future, but figured that would be temporary. Lived with mom for a few months before finding a condo that had the potential to be gorgeous. The comparable units seemed to be selling for $20-$25k more than what I bought mine from HUD for. I thought it was a good deal. Fast forward a couple years. I realize that I REALLY miss living in NYC. Home is cool, but I hate driving and there are countless other issues that seem to break my heart on a daily basis. I came to realize that I was flat-out happier in NYC than I am at home. So why not do something about it? That's why I put my condo up for sale. The agreed sale amount would at least get me out with what I started with. I could use that to move back to NYC & try to regain that contentment I could feel just in walking down the street. Today, that bubble burst. The appraised value by the buyer's bank came in at an amount where if I sold it for that price I would walk away in the red. Not even broke, but still owing money. Fuck. Hopefully I can hit the reset button without too much damage. I just want to be able to smile without it feeling forced. It's amazing how true it is that you don't know what you have until it's gone. Time for more scotch. I'm on my 5th. (moved to the red label from the gold. i have corrected so many typos...) |

Well, you took a shot. If you didn't, you'd be sitting here drinking and lamenting never taking that shot back home. So you got some character of it, and you proved to yourself you're capable of taking jumps, which is a place many people never get to. But still, fuck it. I think our culture romanticizes the concept of "following your heart" and all that - I mean, I know it can work out, but the only reason it can be so worthwhile for those lucky few is that for most of the rest of us, life throws us all kinds of bullshit you'll never stop wading through. I think there's some value in the experience though. Better to wade through shit than hide from it your whole life, I guess. You can't control outcomes really, all you can do is keep plugging away.

Losing my mom this week and they just called the priest in to give my grandma her last rights makes my trip to Utah turning into a Wake for my mom and a funeral for my grandma. FML.....

So last weekend tailgating at the Clemson-S. Carolina game, my wife and I had the brilliant idea to bring Fireball and Cream Soda... it was supposed to "taste like a cinnamon roll".
It tasted like Big Red gum, which is still good. Probably didn't use enough soda. Anyway, we also brought Southern Comfort and Pepsi Zero. By the time I realized I was f'ing hammered, over half the SoCo bottle was gone and I had to tell my wife to cut me off or I would not make it into the game in like 5 hours. I had to watch the Michigan-Ohio State game on Monday because I had virtually no memory of watching the second half at the tailgate. I do also know we had the Auburn-Alabama game on at 4-ish, but no clue what that game was like. On the plus side, I did sober up about 8-8:30 PM after about 6 hours in the wilderness. The weird part is, I'm not even a big drinker, and we don't usually bring liquor to the tailgate. I will probably start bringing some next year but definitely drinking less of it.

More than 3 drinks (usually) these days and I have a wicked hangover. My dad, who is in his 70s now, can't even drink more than a sip of alcohol without getting a headache. He said this gradual worsening started when he was in his 40s. I'm 41 now. I'm terrified.

I see a good number of DUI cases of people in their 70s. If that's any comfort to you. My father's 80 and can do 1 good beer or two light beers.....that does make you question your drinking mortality. I'm 40, drink less than a decade ago, but can make some adjustments and still go pretty big on the chosen night - more hydration, starting earlier, stopping earlier.
