If the AD knew about the videos, than nothing has changed between now and the fall, and any new punishment is based strictly on the fact that they went public. I get that in a practical sense, but it looks bad. Still, better to admit your previous mistake in keeping him on than clinging to the mistake out of pride/fear of the consequences. It will be interesting to see how they publicly justify it. I'm sure the lawyers are working on that right now.

If the logic Pernetti was using in the suspension of Rice was to demonstrate and establish a pattern of behavior, would 2 years of practice video not suffice? Rice has to go and I'm not certain that Pernetti shouldn't follow now. Common sense is increasingly less common these days...

Rice has been fired. Here's the statement from the school and Pernetti:
Quote:
That "recently revealed information" is 99% bullshit I'm sure. Rumor going around is that Murdock wanted a cool $1 million to "settle" his wrongful termination suit and not leak the tapes. Last edited by Logan : 04-03-2013 at 10:14 AM. |

Interesting to me in that, unless I'm reading into it too much, President Barchi seems to be saying that he never personally reviewed the video back in December, which wasn't how it went to my knowledge. Last edited by Logan : 04-03-2013 at 10:49 AM. |

I wonder what Eric Murdoch plans to do for the rest of his life. It definitely won't be coaching.
The video thing was maybe just the legal strategy from the start. The president could agree to the suspension but refrain from watching the video. That way, if things blew up in the media, he could watch it for the first time, which could count as "new information" that would warrant a firing even if Rice hadn't done anything wrong since the fall. Edit: Why Mike Rice is worth all that is kind of a mystery, unless Pernetti thought his own job security was tied to Rice's success. Which would be kind of strange, considering the success of the football program and the Rutgers athletic programs generally. Last edited by molson : 04-03-2013 at 11:40 AM. |

I guess...but I fail to see how the video wasn't enough to get the school off from a legal standpoint anyway. And if Rice didn't take his firing quietly, wouldn't he have once he realized that the video would end up airing as part of any potential lawsuit response which would kill whatever chance he had of coaching again? |

Murdock is just as bad as the coach for his behavior and the AD for his ignorance. It suddenly becomes a morale issue after you get canned? If you were seeing this from day one then you report it in 2011, not wait until you have a falling out with the coach. I saw in an interview that Murdock told the AD, but Rice was on his best behavior when the AD was in the gym.....Bullshit, show him the tapes and it is cut and dried, Rice is fired back in 2011. The amazing thing is that after the Penn State debacle some of these idiots think that covering this up is protecting the school, when the damage is many times worse when it comes out later.....and it always comes out later. I love the way Iowa has been playing lately. It has been so much fun to watch the growth of this team during this run and it's clear that they are overflowing with confidence right now. 11 wins in 14 games, 10 by at least 10 points. 4 games in the NIT, 4 double digit wins. Oh and Marble has been absolutely fantastic during the NIT. If this is anywhere near what we can expect next year, sky is the limit for him and this team, IMO. It's a lot of fun to be able to care about Iowa basketball again! |

Was a 2A (out of 4) high school basketball coach in Indiana. He had quite a program going and coached IU's Yogi Ferrel, and a high major prospect that will be a senior, Trevon Bluiett. Me thinks UCLA will jump into his recruitment.

I didn't know there was such a thing as a "Rich Pitino" but wikpedia currently says this:
"Then April 3rd, 2013 the Minnesota Gophers settle on this chump and hire him to be the head coach after Norwood Teague screwed up the hiring of Flip Saunders. This is going to be a train wreck" |

Can't say I really knew anything about him, but it looks like he took over a team that had gone 8-21 and had 3 scholarship players and went 18-12 and playing for the conference championship. Fairly impressive for his first season as a head coach. |

I actually think that's really cool and a brilliant move in terms of a small revenue boost.

They need to hire Howland. Though really, I don't think he'll be that great at RU. Hurley they probably figure will get his dad to send him recruits, but...that's a stretch.

I love the development of Woodbury. He is getting minutes at the end of games finally. The NIT has been very good for him. I do wish he would dunk the ball, though. Big 11 point win over Maryland. Back to back wins over ACC opponnents by double digits. I dont know much about Baylor. Going to find out Thursday night at 8 CST for the NIT championship.

That's one of my concerns about the whole Mike Rice thing--- he's been contrite about this since December and has been doing everything asked of him. He's being punished twice for the same thing--- the tape was known about in December and was mentioned in an Andy Katz blog about the suspension at the time. He was getting better on the sideline.

ah, i see. either way 'physically abusive' in a coaching context is a grey area. 'verbally abusive' is a joke.
this is from boeheim who is probably the furthest thing in coaching from a tyrant Quote:

You can be tough an a disciplinarian without directly insults towards the players. That's the difference between the two examples. There is no good excuse for belittling the players with slurs directed at them.

i disagree but i'm obviously in the minority. i didn't see anything malicious. as for the 'slurs' it's a closed practice. i can see why you'd want to use the strongest language possible. assuming everyone there is hetero then 'offensive' is a matter of opinion.

You're a fucking cunt or you're a fucking faggot doesn't motivate, it simply belittles. There's no teaching or correcting in those statements.
