Packers just signed guard Jahri Evans from the Saints. He's a bit long in the tooth, but he is a veteran coming off a solid year. Seems like a good move given their current options to replace Lang.

Huge haircut for him. He def got beat with a switch this off season. Shocked there was even 3.5M guaranteed dollars left out there.

Lynch to the Raiders is probably a nothing move, but he's easily one of my favorite backs to watch that I can remember.

I'd put him on a Mt. Rushmore of greatest backs I've ever seen with Barry Sanders among others

Im guessing after missing 3 years he's probably playing this season for a negative amount of money basically. Seems like a zero risk movie for a 2 time all pro

That never stopped CBS from putting Phil Simms on TV for years.

When? Simms was routinely wrong about even the tiniest things in games. Unlike Aikman, he's not a good announcer who got worse over the years, he was just terrible from the beginning.

No. Which is, I think, the point. His reputation, fair or not, is as kind of a jerk. The "mild jerk" character can play pretty well if done right. From all accounts, he isn't some unstable guy whose gonna go off on an F-bomb rant. But if he's a bit salty in his analysis, it can provide a bit of a spark to a telecast.

My favorite Simms thing is when you would hear him correct himself as he was watching the replay. He'd say something like "That looked like a fumble" and then in mid-sentence switch to "Actually, Jim, it looks like his knee might have been down."

Saints fans will always have a soft spot for Simms' bad football analysis. On the Tracy Porter interception of Manning to win the Super Bowl, Manning was hurried into the throw by a blitz. And if you watch the replay, as the ball is snapped, Simms is saying "I would not blitz here." It's like he's so bad that he can swing games by predicting the opposite of what's going to happen. He's the Mike Lombardi of announcing.

He's the NFL equivalent to Vince McMahon and false finishes. It's almost amusing when he goes on a 2-3 minute rant on something where not only is his analysis of the mental aspect of what happened is miles off from reality because his description isn't close to what actually physically happened on the field.

There's gotta be some movie here with Cutler. QB doesn't put the work in, throws a ton of picks. Basically his career is an abject failure, other than money. Then he gets a broadcast job, and he is getting drunk a lot. His kids all die cause their crazy mom doesn't vaccinate. After a season or two in the booth, he's down to the Fox F- team. We see montages of him throwing tight spirals at a target of her face. He's now virtually penniless cause Kristen gave all their money to Avocado Wolfe.

Suddenly with nothing left to lose, he throws himself into his job. He starts noticing coverages, etc. Like, he's suddenly aware of the difference between man and zone coverages. Well the week before the superbowl in the conference championship game, one team loses all 3 of theiron QBS.

And Jay, newly empowered picks up the phone and calls the coach...

You will never ever get players to self report concussions.

If you really want to minimize damage, you need to do two things, IMO

(1) Give every player a test after every game, either right after or before the next practice.

(2) Have a concussion-only IR list that does not count against the roster limit. Guys go on when they are diagnosed and can come off as soon as they are symptom free. That makes the burden of having concussed players hurt the team less.

Not that we're close to the cap line anyways, but I love that all the incentives don't count against the salary cap because they're based on last year's performance so both the PT & production thresholds are considered "unlikely to be reached."

This is some bullshit here. The Silver Rush was one the most heralded defensive lines in the history of the NFL. There's the Black Curtain, The Purple People Eaters, and the Silver Rush. That's the trifecta when it comes to amazing defensive lines with cool nicknames. Their recognition is long, long overdue. I'm pro Gay Bowl. I'm excited for the prospect of both the Woodcock Bowl and the Baker Bowl. And, yes, I would fully support a Cofer Bowl. He was a goddamn Pro Bowler. #restoretheroar

"Silver Rush"? The Doomsday Defense, Fearsome Foursome, Monsters of the Midway, New York Sack Exchange, and No-Name Defense would like a word.

And yes, I would support your assertion that Mike Cofer was the Derek Anderson of his time. Hell, half the people who voted for him thought they were nominating the kicker.

Rumblings in KC are that Mr. Hunt wanted to extend both Dorsey and Reid. Reid agreed to it, but Dorsey only wanted to finish the season and then 'see what happens'. Further speculation is that he's wanting to step into the Green Bay GM position next year.

Jim Mora is still so mad at the Colts for firing him fifteen years ago that he won't go back for Peyton Manning's statue unveiling.

I had actually forgotten that Mora coached the Colts. Apparently, he has not forgotten.

My son just finished a great off-season project. He wanted to know who were the best and worst NFL franchises of all-time. So I taught him how to use Excel and about data normalization. Since he couldn't use wins or win percentages or championships, the methodology he came up was to do a power ranking* for each year from 1925-2016. The normalization comes in given the different number of teams for most years. So he normalized it based on a 1-32 ranking. For example, only 4 active franchises in 1925, the Packers were 8-5, 9th place, slightly above average points differential and that normalized to about 15 on a subjective 1-32 scale. When all of the power rankings were done, he averaged and ranked them. Here are the results:

1 Dallas Cowboys 11.75 (their average rankings from 1966-1983 were off the charts)
2 Green Bay Packers 13.03
3 Baltimore Ravens 13.48 (we knew this was going to be the outlier before we started)
4 Miami Dolphins 13.67 (very good rankings from 1970-2001, only 2 years below 16 in that stretch)
5 Minnesota Vikings 13.91
6 New England Patriots 14.05
7 New York Giants 14.12
8 Chicago Bears 14.15
9 San Francisco 49ers 14.21
10 Denver Broncos 14.84
11 Baltimore/Indianapolis Colts 14.88
12 Oakland/Los Angeles Raiders 14.96 (easily top 5 until 2003)
13 Cleveland Browns 15.31 (got to remember 1950-1969, top 4 most years)
14 Pittsburgh Steelers 15.45 (thought they'd be higher but they were dreadful for 39 years)
15 Seattle Seahawks 15.68
16 Kansas City Chiefs 15.95
17 Washington Redskins 16.06
18 Cleveland/St Louis/Los Angeles Rams 16.28
19 San Diego/Los Angeles Chargers 16.65
20 Philadelphia Eagles 16.73
21 Carolina Panthers 17.09
22 Detroit Lions 17.34
23 Houston Oilers/Tennessee Titans 17.47
24 Buffalo Bills 18.40
25 New York Jets 18.53
26 Cincinnati Bengals 18.78
27 New Orleans Saints 19.12
28 Atlanta Falcons 19.25
29 Houston Texans 19.53
30 Jacksonville Jaguars 19.68
31 Chicago/St Louis/Arizona Cardinals 21.00
32 Tampa Bay Buccaneers 21.41

*note: this will be controversial to some but we strongly believe that you take all games played in season/post-season into consideration, not just the last one. If you don't accept that then just ignore this post.
