It's not tied to J&J that I'm aware - the chart is merely for reference to what happens to population confidence in vaccines when they are shut down for what statistically appears to be a minor issue.

I was reading an article today and the J&J and AstraZeneca vaccines use very similar techniques for delivering the vaccine while Moderna/Pfizer use a different approach.

Got Pfizer #2 at Mercedes Benz Stadium. Really quick and efficient process.

And Jon, we don't have Astra-Zenica in the US. It's different than J&J.

When I took my second shot, I felt fine that day except maybe a little tired (and sore arm because, you know, metal jabbed in arm) but I was glad I took the day after off as it hit in the 18-36 hour range.

Kinda. It’s made mostly in Europe after British government & EU funding & Astra Zenica development.

UK placed an order with huge penalty clauses compared to the EU contract, who also took longer to authorise it’s use, so Astra Zenica have been letting the EU down more than the UK, so the EU stopped the export of doses to Australia in particular, and tried to stop them to the UK.

But the main point is that it is being sold at cost, non-profit, to try and get as many doses to as many parts of the world as possible - much of the plan was to help vaccinate poorer countries.

However the EU reaction (which is broadly ‘we don’t think it works very well, it’s dangerous, but we want more of it and the UK can’t have as much), plus concerns over possible clotting (less than 1:1m, but this is more than would be expected in the general population) have denigrated what was supposed to be a largely altruistic effort (not by the UK government, by Astra Zenica), to the point where the CEO has effectively said he half wishes he had never started down that route given all the flak he has received

The EU have behaved pretty despicably about the supply chain throughout, although the safety aspect does definitely need to be investigated fully regardless

I actually didn't know this. It does seem that AZ has lost the race and won't get any credit for what they tried to do.

It was weird how thoroughly it ended when it ended.

When I get the actual flu or something, there are a few days after where I feel slightly off.

With this, when I woke up the day after, it was totally fine.

I was surprised how hard it me the day after my second vaccine on Thursday. It wasn't too bad, I just felt 80 years old - tired and slow moving all day.

Then I convinced myself I needed to sleep in on Saturday and Sunday because, even though I didn't have the side effects anymore, I needed to recover from having the side effects. I haven't slept in like that in years, but it was mostly a culmination of a stressful week I think.

Taking the first of the Moderna today. A bit nervous, but it will be done.

Did anyone take or hear advice to take Tylenol or Advil before the shot?

I read the opposite - Advil or aspirin beforehand might mitigate the antibody response.

Edit: Most seem to think taking them after is OK, but, if I read when I'm reading now, I might have just powered through the day without them. Advil did help me go from tired and achy to just tired.

Get and stay hydrated before and after. Though you're unlikely to have any issues after the first one.

Yeah. There seems to be pretty consistent advice about not taking anything beforehand, but that it is ok to take things after when you start to feel the effects.

I had the second Pfizer shot on Friday. I was fine until about midday Saturday where I had a robust response - fever, chills, extreme fatigue. Just some lingering effects Sunday morning and fine by Sunday afternoon. Fever got high enough that I did take Tylenol to get it to come down.

Just had my 2nd this morning, popped a preventative advil after I got home.

Most of the people I know have felt miserable later into the first day, not the second, so we'll see.

It's weird how some people have no reaction and others have it bad. I was knocked on my ass the day after my second moderna shot. Felt like I had a bad hangover. But by the evening I was fine.

I have read that you should be well hydrated when you get that 2nd shot to mitigate side effects.

Moderna here. First dose: slightly sore arm. Second dose (this past Thursday): mild headache, nausea, and body aches. Didn't stop me from working or doing anything that I normally do. I would classify it as akin to a mild hangover.

Having to deal with an infant in that state...not super fun.

Huh. Hydration. I hadn’t heard that, but I drink a ton of water. The recommended half gallon a day is a low day for me. I wonder if that played into me having no reaction whatsoever to J&J.

My guy very much recommended staying hydrated after the shot. He personally didn't and had a pretty tough reaction. He also said no ibuprofen for a day or so. It won't hurt the effectiveness but it will slow the vaccine from becoming fully effective. FWIW.

I had my 2nd dose of the Moderna vaccine Saturday afternoon.
I woke up on Sunday with a slight fever of 100.3 that went away shortly after I took Tylenol. I had a slight headache and slight arm ache throughout the day. My arm hurt a lot less this time the first time.

I felt well enough to do a little yard work and walk my dog 4 miles in the afternoon.

Three of my immediate family members faired significantly worse (extreme fatigue, fever, headache, and chills) and the other arguably slightly worse (no fever, significant fatigue, and slight headache).

I feel pretty fortunate to have had minimal side effects.

Yeah, the guy who gave me my shot told me to drink lots of water.

So far no real problems except for some aches which might just be in my head.

Heh. I mainline water as it is (so dry here, and I was a big water drinker even before we moved). Go me.

'Bout 8 hours in, arm's a little sore, nothing else.

Ugh, the vaccine decided to throw everything it had at me this morning. Head-ache, chills, aching, fatigue. Just sitting at the computer and typing this is exhausting.

I'm not exactly sure the reason, but my county is #1 in Kentucky for vaccination rate (over 44% of adults are vaccinated). Maybe it's because the bar is so low. Tonight we're headed to the county with the lowest percentage of vaccinated adults for a softball game, on the day the "no outdoor masks" goes into effect. Not that I'm concerned for myself, but that's trip I'd rather not take.

The West Virginia governor announced that they are offering a $100 savings bond for 'young people' (age 16-35) that get the vaccine. I think we need some creative incentives to get to the chunk of folks that are willing but not motivated to get it. Not sure how well this one will work, but I don't mind them getting creative and trying some things out. Our state was doing really well with distributing the vaccine, but has sort of run into a wall (like a lot of other places) where it is readily available but the demand is no longer very high.

Prior to the last recovery bill, former Maryland Rep and presidential candidate John Delaney wrote an opinion piece suggesting that they tie getting vaccinated to recovery checks as a motivator. The difference between $1400 vs $100 is pretty darn substantial, but I imagine that opportunity has passed.

I like the general idea of rewarding rather than punishing to help incentivize folks getting it, so we can get to the herd immunity threshold and open things back up more safely.

2nd Moderna doses yesterday for my wife, oldest daughter and me. Three different responses.

I had no problem of any kind at all. In fact, my arm was more sore after the first dose.

My wife was fine until a few hours ago. Now she is feeling sluggish and her arm hurts a good bit.

My daughter got laid out like being hit by Lawrence Taylor. She is still in bed and her arm hurts so badly she can't touch it.

Rogan, based on his years of medical training and statistical analysis, advised "young people" to skip the vaccine, on account of the lower risk they face from covid.

We can simultaneously agree that of course people get to make up their own minds, but as long as platformed people get to frame this as a legitimate debate, and suggest that it's somehow inappropriate for leaders to urge/ask residents to vaccinate in the name of the common good, we are going to really have trouble getting to a safe spot. And then the vax deniers will be the ones screaming most loudly about continued restrictions and limitations because we haven't fully beaten the spread.

It's so easy to see playing out this way, it's like you see the trolley heading for the people on the track, but you don't even get a level to pull.

By the way, like every gloomy prediction I have made throughout all this, I am actively hoping to be proven wrong. I hope that whatever we are able to do as a society is "good enough" and that we really get this under control.

At the moment, really just thinking about the US, as the worldwide situation is its own conundrum beyond my framing capacity.

I was a big fan of Delaney's idea. If there's another stimulus check in the future (and I think there will be with the way Biden wants to spend money) then I think it should require vaccinations.

But really vaccination should be its own reward. If you don't want to get vaccinated, then I'm all for letting nature run its course.

It's weird how the Trump "Make America Great Again" thing started as trying to frame a culture war about going back to 1950 when whites were totally in control but has morphed into a movement to take us back to like 1850 - this kind of wild west, every-person-for-themselves, manifest destiny-type of attitude. Minus the personal responsibility part when it's not convenient for you, of course.

The Rogan thing is doubly worse because young people are such spreaders of the disease because they aren't stricken with it as bad as older people. So yeah, you will be fine but the 12 people on the bus you infected may not be.

The inability for people to either think critically or just flay out have regard for others lives is staggering.

I'm going for my second dose tomorrow evening.

Stick that in your pipe and smoke it, Rogan.

I saw a clip recently of Rogan absolutely bewildered upon learning, about a week or two ago, that people with jobs got stimulus checks too (if they made under whatever the income threshold was). He was absolutely shocked.

I always kind of liked Rogan, I've never listened to his podcast or anything, but he is spectacularly ill-informed for someone who weighs in on news and events every day. It's not surprising he'd drift into anti-vaxxer stuff.

When he got the big contract recently Rogan packed up shop in California and moved his show to a personal compound in Texas, and I expect his views to get worse with more time and further isolation inside a Scrooge McDuck vault powered by his own farts.
