Or perhaps that another team had also complained to the league it wasn't being called. I know everyone seems to love the hoodie, but Rex Ryan isn't terrible.

On the penalty at the end of the Pats game, I believe most of the angst is not that it was called in that situation, but that they chose that situation to make it the FIRST time it was called ever. It has now been noted many times where it hadn't been called, teams were getting used to the warnings. If this had been called in the preseason, or an earlier week, or even earlier in this very game, there is less angst, everyone is used to the penalty and understands it.

But for the officials to decide that a 56-yard FG attempt in OT is the FIRST time they will actually throw a flag is the part that seems weird and out of place.

Having said all that, any personal anger / frustration is directed at the player and/or coach who ordered him to do it for pushing the rule boundaries on a FIFTY_SIX YARD ATTEMPT. The odds of him making it are probably less than your odds of getting called for a penalty if you go all-out to block it.

Josh Freeman possibly out Monday night with concussion symptoms. Vikings are going to go with Ponder if Freeman can't play.

I could swear that this penalty was called in a Cowboys preseason game, because I was surprised when everyone went apeshit over it and I had (I believe) seen it called before.

You sure it was this rule? I thought that was the rule where you couldn't hit the long-snapper before he raised his head or something, also a new rule but one that makes more sense to me. I know I saw that one get called once in preseason.

How terrible is Tebow that none of these teams are even interested in him. It is too bad the circus follows him everywhere because you have to think someof these clubs would give him a shot if not for the distraction

I think it's a shame no one is willing to give him a real shot. He isn't a prototype NFL QB, but he can take a lot of punishment and would serve some team well as a short-yardage/wildcat QB.

I'm sure it was that rule, but I went back through the PbP of the Cowboys preseason games and couldn't find that penalty called. Maybe it was just discussed? I'm not sure, but I do know that I had heard about it before this weekend...

Who "needs" a running back to line-up in the QB position? It just gives some creative offensive coordinator another wrinkle that defenses have to prepare for.

I haven't really heard much "angst" over the fact that the rule was called correctly. (More like bewilderment that Bellichick either didn't know the rule, or thought that this technique was worth the risk of a penalty on a 56-yard field goal.) Nothing like the tuck rule in that sense. Though it's a hell of a way to lose a game.

Exactly. The blame falls on Jones and the coaches, and I don't think anyone aside from a vocal minority of die-hard fans really feels otherwise. I just disagree with all the "suck it, Patriots! you whiners!" response to this that thinks the fan base and team are reacting to this with.

Other differences between this and the tuck rule:

- The tuck rule did not put the Patriots in FG range.
- The 45-yard FG that came on that drive a few plays later to tie it was in the snow and into the wind.
- The Patriots still had to drive for the winning FG in OT, in the snow and wind.

But yes, similar obscure rule not called in forever that the Patriots did derive some benefit from, I agree.

The Jags owner must be wanting to move the team to London given that they are playing there the next four seasons. Otherwise I can't believe the NFL would choose Jacksonville as a team to "show off" its product to European fans.

Maybe they're trying to convince Europeans that the game is accessible & can be played by pretty much anybody

They chose Jacksonville because they're the team most willing to give up a home game.

The other difference is that the Tuck Rule play went to a booth review and the refs were more or less forced to go by the letter of the rulebook. In this case the ref decided to throw the flag during play and not on any of the earlier attempts by the Pats or the Jets when they did the same thing (I'll ignore earlier weeks there). People can interpret it as whining if they want, I'm more just perplexed as to why that ref decided to throw the flag then.

Doesn't Khan live/spend a lot of time in London, and don't the Jags have some of the lowest NFL attendance? Could it be as simple as he's the NFL owner least likely to object to losing a home game? The idea of a London franchise is also going to be very tricky to implement - NFL targets London franchise - Grantland

Yeah, but it seems like reaching for Favre at this point is like so far below all those other choices. Look, I know things look bleak for the team but you don't call a guy who hasn't played in 3 years and who looked pretty bad the last time out.

I guess if you are going to the well, you may as well go all the way to the bottom to start.

I wouldn't have went after Favre.

But I'm not sure if the Rams will win another game this year and they have to try something to kick-start the offense. Fisher will likely get canned at the end of the year if the finish 6-10 or worse.

Hell, I'd probably sign Tebow at this point. He can't be any worse than the other QB's on the roster.

Rams have some good talent on the team and will have both their own and the Redskins' 1st rounder this year. They could theoretically rebuild quickly.

As a Seahawks fan I knew the Niners would be tough this year, but based on their performance within the division last year and all the picks they had in hand, I was really worried that the Rams would take a major step forward this year. Not sure what the disconnect was this year or if they just overachieved in the division last year, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if they're a 10 win team next year with the talent level they have on hand plus the extra ammo again this offseason.

Firing Fisher would be a huge step back for the Rams. Maybe teams in general should stop carrying backup QB's who they do not intend to start in the event of an injury though. Kinda seems stupid to keep a guy on your roster if you don't want him to play no matter what.

Also, regarding the Jags and the NFL's desire to put a team in London... It would be the worst team in the league every single year. No players would sign with them in free agency, and no draftees will want to be selected by them. That and an 18 game season/further elimination of the preseason and training camp would result in a major hit to the leagues credibility. You'd have players getting hurt even more than they have this season, sloppy play on the field, and no way to develop young players.

The league instead needs to create a minor league. 16 teams, each team made up of developmental players from two NFL teams. Put the minor league teams in smaller cities, run the minor league season directly opposite of the NFL season (February to May) for say.. 12 weeks plus a 4 team playoff featuring the 4 division winners. Leave every other aspect of the league as it is right now. This takes care of the desire for further money making opportunity while improving the depth and quality of the talent pool so that when the major league teams suffer injuries there is always someone with experience ready to step in instead of an untested guy or some schmo off the street.

That and an 18 game season/further elimination of the preseason and training camp would result in a major hit to the leagues credibility. I wonder what the barriers are to something like this? Is it a lack of audience, or the prospect of the NCAA losing money?

Agreed. And you gotta think the Rams thought the same, which is why they used assets to move up to acquire Tavon Austin. It really goes to show how you can't get by without an offensive line, and the Rams are still paying big for the major whiffs they made there with high picks. If they can convert those two picks into a QB and an OL, they will be on their way.

That being said, Brian Schottenheimer should never have gotten another OC job after what he showed with the Jets. He has just no imagination, and it's even more perplexing that they would spend so much to get Austin with absolutely no idea of how to get him involved.
