Every time I've heard of players being kicked out for academics - whether ND, the Harvard scandal, or random others - they're gone for the whole semester. Ergo, if the players are still enrolled in classes, this is more along the lines of a BYU Honor Code Violation than any NCAA enforceable action, and there's a decent chance they play again.

But my main gripe was how shoddily written that story was. It literally contradicts itself multiple times, and a rush to publication isn't an excuse, because it contains an update from a later day at the bottom.
Quote:
Sources: Notre Dame dismisses four players connected to academic fraud

This time, four players, three starters, have been dismissed from the team after the school conducted an internal investigation this summer, sources close to the program told FOX Sports. The investigation uncovered that the players had submitted papers and homework that were written for them by others.

Notre Dame's president, Rev. John Jenkins, however, said in a press conference that an investigation is ongoing and the players will be held out of activities but have not been dismissed at this time.
...
It is unclear at this time if the four players will be allowed to return to the school in the future as Golson has after he sat out the entire fall semester.

Athletic director Jack Swarbrick said the players have not been suspended. He said they remain grant-in-aid students and have access to athletic facilities and resources.

Well, there goes my world:

AD Ben Jay: 'Very real possibility' that Hawaii drops football

Quote:
The Hawaii Warriors football program is in a large financial hole and at a Board of Regents meeting held Monday, athletic director Ben Jay says, "there's a very real possibility of football going away." The football program has been running in the red in 11 of its 13 seasons and is facing a $2.1 million deficit in the current fiscal year.
This should not come as too big of a surprise that Hawaii football is having money issues, because back in 2007 former star quarterback Colt Brennan complained about there being no soap in the locker rooms.

Its interesting that Iowa is the most hated school in Iowa. I know ISU fans hate Iowa but i thought that would be a small number.

It is based off of a reddit poll, so not scientific at all

DGB will probably play for Alabama St. now. Isnt that the D2 school that takes all the SEC criminals?

I was hoping he would get to play. I guess he should have waited one more year to get kicked out of Mizzou. The P5 would have granted him a waiver.

Perfect example of a situation where you had information that was good but ultimately wasn't the final result. I sympathize. Having a good source can ultimately lead to people acting like your source wasn't good just because something changed in the meanwhile.

Yep that's why if you read what I actually wrote it was, "I cant see how" but that Coach Stoops "felt very confident"

Its a thin line....my original bump quote was more me saying I guess he did know something.

Looks like a good way to wrap up the off season thread.

Quote:
The Atlantic Coast Conference distributed a record $291.7 million in total
revenue for the 2013-14 fiscal year, the league disclosed to ESPN.com on
Friday.

That number is up $56.6 million over last year, when the ACC was
a 12-member conference. But now it has 15 members with the additions of
Pittsburgh, Syracuse and Notre Dame in all sports except for
football.

Expansion allowed the ACC to renegotiate its television deal,
a big reason why revenues have increased. All 14 full members are set to
receive an average of $20.8 million, up $1.2 million from last
year.

Notre Dame will receive a different share, which was
undisclosed.

The $20.8 million average each school is in line to receive
is nearly identical to what will go to the 14-team SEC, which announced last
week it will hand out slightly more than $20.9 million to its member schools
after a record $292.8 million in total revenue.

The Big 12 also
announced last week it would distribute a record $23 million to each of its
10-member schools.

Maryland, which leaves the ACC for the Big Ten on
July 1, will have its share withheld until its lawsuit against the league is
resolved. The Terps are challenging whether they should pay the $52 million
exit fee required by ACC bylaws. The ACC countersued. A mediator has been
assigned to try and work out a settlement between the two.

The
distributions from the ACC do not include the individual multimedia rights
deals each school owns.

Link: http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/110

So the mighty SEC schools got about $100k/each more from the TV deal than the lowly ACC.

And the ACC schools get to retain online direct media shares.
How, oh how, will anyone ever compete with the HUGE SEC MONEY.

Can't wait for Saturday. The GREATEST DAY IN SPORTS IN THE US.

Speaking of the ACC I was happy to see yesterday where Frank Beamer announced that true freshman Michael Santamaria would handle FG/PAT duties for their season opener.

He graduated from my son's school last year, a really quality kid and super nice guy, I hope he has a great college career.

Wouldn't that be pre-SEC network money? I don't honestly know the answer to this question though I could have sworn the SEC schools were in the $35-40 million range each.

The SEC netowrk is not included in these numbers nor is the ACC network.
However ACC teams maintain their individual multi media rights whereas SEC teams have to divide and share those as they are controlled by the conference. I.E. they are in the SEC numbers and not in the ACC.

The $35-40 number has been floated and parroted based on a 2020 estimate that Slive through out at the launch of SECN.

Its just reached a ridiculous level lately with the ESPN hype/talking heads. The other night on CFB live they went on a rant about Bama spending $10MM on their new weight room while "Clemson is redoing theirs and only spending $400k".... That is redoing their 4 year old $21MM weight room. But high school kids who hear this only hear and dont research.

It's just piling straws on a buried camel.

It's the only position people have as an option right now. As much as I've wondered what the final number will be, I do know that the launch numbers have exceeded the biggest expectations that ESPN and the SEC had going into this deal. That's a scary thought. But in the end, you have to wait a few years for the dust to settle to see the true effect. But I would be shocked if the SEC doesn't end up on the top of the heap by a good margin in the end.

Wow, if the new story is true, then the following quotes are especially embarrassing:

"I would do it again for whatever kid it was, it did not have to be my nephew," Shaw said today. "My ankles really hurt, but I am lucky to be surrounded by the best trainers and doctors in the world. I am taking my rehab one day at a time, and I hope to be back on the field as soon as possible."

Said head coach Steve Sarkisian: "That was a heroic act by Josh, putting his personal safety aside. But that's the kind of person he is. It is unfortunate that he'll be sidelined for a while and we will miss his leadership and play, but I know he'll be working hard to get back on the field as soon as possible."

LAPD Statement On Josh Shaw | Inside USC with Scott Wolf

Quote:
From Cmdr. Andrew Smith, LAPD spokesman on Josh Shaw:
The department has been checking its reports.
“We’ve got no record of us having a run in with him,” Smith said. “That’s not to say something didn’t happen with him. We have no record of anything happening.”

And from TMZ

Quote:
USC football player Josh Shaw was named in a burglary report ... stemming from an incident that went down Saturday night ... law enforcement sources tell TMZ Sports.

We're told Shaw was NOT named as a suspect in the burglary.

Here's the breakdown -- we're told someone called police to report a suspicious person "shimmying" down the side of a building in downtown L.A. near the USC campus. The tipster gave a description of the suspicious person to police.

We're told cops went to the building to investigate -- and spoke to a woman who lived in the building. Cops gave the woman the description of the suspicious person and asked if she had seen anyone who matched the description.

We're told the woman said, "Yes, that sounds like my boyfriend Josh Shaw."

Cops took a "burglary report" -- even though nothing was reported stolen -- and in it, mentioned the connection to Shaw.

Cops later spoke with Shaw on the phone and the USC football player denied ever being at the building.

This story is about to blow up in the national media, they were talking about it today on the radio. I feel bad that Sark is going to have to deal with something like this so early in his tenure. Unlike many Huskies I like Sark and wish him well.

It is going to be an interesting test to see what he does if the rumors are true. IMO he should be kicked off the team if they are. That will set a tone for other guys.

Josh Shaw Admits to USC Officials That He Lied - USC Trojans
Quote:
USC senior cornerback Josh Shaw came to USC athletic department officials this afternoon (Wednesday, Aug. 27) and admitted that he had lied about how he suffered his ankle injuries over the weekend.

He said that the story he told of rescuing his nephew in a pool in Palmdale, Calif., was a complete fabrication. He apologized for misleading his coaches, teammates, athletic department officials and the public.

"We are extremely disappointed in Josh," said USC head football coach Steve Sarkisian. "He let us all down. As I have said, nothing in his background led us to doubt him when he told us of his injuries, nor did anything after our initial vetting of his story.

"I appreciate that Josh has now admitted that he lied and has apologized. Although this type of behavior is out of character for Josh, it is unacceptable. Honesty and integrity must be at the center of our program. I believe Josh will learn from this. I hope that he will not be defined by this incident, and that the Trojan Family will accept his apology and support him."

Sarkisian said that Shaw has been suspended indefinitely from all team activities.

Shaw has retained Donald Etra as legal counsel. Etra will issue a statement on Shaw's behalf soon.

USC regrets the posting of the initial story on Monday (Aug. 25).

TrojanSports.com - Shaw named in police report

Quote:
TrojanSports.com has confirmed that USC senior cornerback Josh Shaw has been named in a Los Angeles Police Department report. The report details a break-in on Saturday night in which a suspect was witnessed jumping out a three-story balcony.

L.A. Police spokeswoman Liliana Preciado said two Los Angeles police officers responded to a complaint Saturday evening from a resident at the Orsini Apartments alleging that a female in the neighboring room was screaming for help.

Preciado said the officers arrived at Orsini Building One, located on the west side of North Figueroa Street and the home to many USC students, at around 10:40 p.m. She said LAPD got no response after announcing itself and knocking on the door of the third-story unit where the screams reportedly came from.

Witnesses described the suspect: "They saw a black male with dreadlocks leave the apartment from the balcony," Preciado said the police report reads.

Preciado said the officers then broke the door open and searched inside, but no one was there. A female resident who lives in the unit surfaced in the hallway shortly thereafter. She identified Josh Shaw as her boyfriend and said he matched the description of the man witnesses said jumped off the balcony. The third story is about 20 feet high from the ground.

"The person that lives in that apartment returned and talked about her roommates and her boyfriend, who she identified as Josh Shaw," Preciado said. "The victim's boyfriend had a similar description to the suspect seen leaving the apartment -- male, black, with dreadlocks. She said, That's my boyfriend."

Preciado said the department is still investigating whether the resident of the unit in question was the female screaming in the room. No stolen belongings were reported but police say her window had been pried open.

And whatever moron decided to release that story given the timing and plausibility issues that should have been obvious to anyone remotely involved with the program should be out the door next as well. Hopefully it wasn't Sark...

Perhaps they should have been more cautious about trumpeting the story, but consider that:

A) Shaw has been a stand-up kid that hasn't given them reason to doubt him;
B) Shaw's sister apparently confirmed the story when asked about it

The story was definitely unusual, but it wasn't so crazy as to be immediately doubtful. If you have a kid that has been trustworthy up to this point and his family confirms the story, is it really so outrageous that USC publicized the story? Is the alternative that coaches and AD's have to always assume kids are lying and go full-on private investigation on them to corroborate?
