They funded right-wing terrorist groups for decades. The Chairman was a literal Nazi for years and the initial goal was to have Nazis stay behind to cause terror. Operation Condor and Gladio are good examples if you want to read up on some stuff they have done. There are coups and economic terrorism that led to countless innocent lives being lost. You can toss Afghanistan and Iraq (sort of) on the list. And for something recent, just look at the absolute disaster that their efforts in Libya led to.

The idea is good on paper when Russia was a genuine threat to the Western world. But it just became a tool to prop up far-right, fascist groups/governments at the behest of big business. It stands for nothing (we allow dictators and socialist countries in) and absolutely no one believes we'll go to war over Estonia or Macedonia. Heck, we're actively threatening to annex another sitting members land right now.

It now largely acts as a protection racket to funnel money into the defense industry. I think if European countries want to get together and form some alliance, that's great. But I do not see any value in us being part of it unless you're a board member at Lockheed.

So that harrowing rescue of a downed fighter pilot has just disappeared? No videos? No interviews? For an administration that has spent hundreds of millions on slick videos for incels, it's awfully strange how quiet this has been.

Topple government of random country that you don't like this week
Make enemies
Disappear and let rebels take over
Repeat in other countries every 4-6 weeks
Increase military budget because everybody hates your country

So about that Iran charging fees for the strait...

Why does Oman get half?

What if a ship belonging to a NATO country decided to sail the Strait of Hormuz?
Would Iran attack it? Could that trigger article 5 of NATO and we'd have to go back in?

We're unfreezing 6 bil to give to Iran as a start to the negotiations. This has been a disaster.

It's actually money from a deal for hostages under Biden. The issue isn't the money, the issue is that after this war we're giving away things we would never have agreed to before the war. It's been an absolute disaster.

That money was still Iran's. We stole it many years ago. Biden agreed to return it for the hostages which is fine. We shouldn't have stolen their money in the first place.

So was the money that was unfrozen by the original Iran deal, which these same yahoos claimed "Obama gave them billions of tax-payers money" over and over again.

Iran wants control of the Strait and Trump wants to split the fees. Freedom of navigation is out the window, I guess.

I think we've reached the throw ketchup packets at the wall phase of the war. Based on Trump admitting gas prices would likely remain high through November, I think he realizes he made a massive mistake. He thought Iran was like Venezuela, when they're a 15ish military power that's spent the past decade plus specifically gearing up to survive a conflict like this against us. He's never going to admit any of this, but we can hope he takes his frustrations out on Hegseth once it's over.

He values loyalty so much he may just accept Hegseth as a feature and not a bug. Same for Netanyahu. He got played and will still keep going back (see: Putin).

They announced there will be a blockade of all Iranian ports starting tomorrow. That has to mean ships in the gulf. We are about to put a lot of sailors in some very direct danger. We are also talking possible international incidents with India and China while trying to impeded thier ships.

Never happen. He has filled the cabinet with people who are loyal to him and will choose their own self interests over the countries.

GOP lawmakers have shown over and over they have zero courage to do the right thing because they know they will be primaried.

There has been an agreement to extend the ceasefire as the non-existent blockade has done nothing. There is also another 10k US troops being sent to the region.

Trump has extended the ceasefire without Iran even requesting an extension. That sort of plays into what my friend in intelligence suggested but didn't confirm this weekend. Whenever I said I felt like Trump was going to have press the attack again, either in someway catastrophic or with some sort of invasion, he would say "We'll see." He didn't seemed convinced it would happen. He did tell me that he is one of the many experts on the region that knew the bombing wasn't going to work, and that Iran would react exactly as it has. He didn't (or couldn't) give me anything else, other than he did confirm there isn't some large number of US dead or anymore US planes shot down that haven't been reported.

The experts are working on the assumption they know that the goal of this bombing was. If the goal was to enact regime change or destroy the Iran's nuclear program, then sure bombing was going to fail every time. If the goal was to show off our strengths and weaknesses militarily, our absolute weaknesses diplomatically and do everything we can to try and destroy longstanding alliances, all while not having an exit strategy, the bombing have been a total success.

Venezuela went well, so Trump & Hegseth thought they could drop some bombs on Iran, get a regime change to someone who would rhetorically fellate Trump, claim some glorious victory, and maybe get some free oil. That's literally the most likely "strategy" behind this all.

Now that none of this has worked, everyone's trying to make up something that will exit this mess in a way that won't have Trump getting into a tantrum.

Tell me I'm wrong.

I think that is part of it but I also think it was what Israel wanted and Miriam Adelson didn't give him $250 million for nothing.

War with Iran was inevitable, even if Harris had won. Difference is in how competently the operation was and selling it to the public. Trump folks didn't even bother with the pre-war propaganda.

“It’s [been] eight weeks that the U.S. now has been involved with Iran,” the reporter said. “You initially had said it would be four to six weeks and it would be over.”

“Well, I hoped that, but I took a little break,” Trump retorted. “I gave them a break.”

Apparently our munition levels are becoming such a concern that we told Estonia that we will not be delivering the rockets and missiles for the 6 High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems that we sold to them last year any time soon.

Estonia is pissed. This could push NATO and other countries to China to purchase weapons.

Pre-war our inventories for a lot of key weapons systems were considered low and we've used over half of most of those because Hegseth thought they could shock and awe Iran into submission quickly.

Our allies(?) have already begun making the shift to other sources for military weapons and munitions. It is at a trickle at the moment but I assume that if the acrimony between the US and our supposed allies continues, we should probably expect that trickle to increase.

Don't worry, they moved everyone off base to hotels to use the civilians as human shields.

And hey, I wasn't the one who started the war and I'm not in charge of the military with a trillion dollar budget that let a near 70 year old plane pierce through our air defense like hot butter. Take it up with them.

Whoever is trying to save JD Vance's 2028 chances is really starting to leak stuff. Reports today that Vance doesn't believe the information about the Iran war that the Pentagon (Hegseth) is feeding them.
