FWIW I never had the bug experiences others did. But I'm also a person who thinks the game is plenty hard enough on normal difficulty so may not notice them as much.

It should be on the top of your list. Enemy Within just rocks (whether you call it an expansion or DLC - I guess they're one and the same in this case). There's more enemies, more things to research, more options and so forth. When you punch a guy through a wall with a MEC Trooper or engage from a hidden position with the assistance of meld, it's all great fun. |

It's basically a re-release of enemy unknown with, like Blackadar said, more of everything. I loved it.

So I recently procured the XCom Enemy Within game by cashing in credits from a survey site (Pinecone Research FTW) And this is what happens about 20 hours in to my first Iron Man playthrough..

Playing through the game and just got this Captain as a reward on a mission. She has high will and aim and looks like she could have some interesting builds. I am just curious how you would build her though.
Here is the skill tree that is available: Squaddie: *Smoke Grenade Corporal: * Sentinel (two reaction shots while on overwatch); or * Close Combat Specialist (free reaction shot against anyone who closes within 4 times, does not require overwatch) Sergeant: * Gunslinger (extra 2 damage with pistols) * Smoke & Mirrors (2 extra uses of Smoke Grenade per mission) Lieutenant: * Sprinter (3 extra tiles of movement) * Bullet Swarm (standard shot does not end turn if used as first action) Captain: * Dense Smoke (Smoke Grenades have increased area of effect and provide 20 better defense) * Combat Drugs (+20 will and 10% aim for allies in smoke) Right now I am thinking that Sprinter + Sentinel along with Mimetic Skin as a Gene Mod would make her an incredibly effective flanker. Are you using some sort of mod? I don't remember Supports having skill trees quite like that.

I am using Training Roulette which is an option in the Second Wave add on to the game. Soldiers have some of their nomal set skills (i.e. Snipers always have a choice of Snap Shot or Squadsight, Support have Smoke Grenade, etc...) but a lot of the other skills are randomly generated from a pool of available skills. I think it adds a lot to the game because when a soldier gains a promotion you really aren't sure what path they are going to take. You can end up with some really unique soldiers. Also in general the Enemy Within expansion is awesome. Adds a lot to the game. Last edited by Ironhead : 01-03-2015 at 04:43 PM. |

I played through the Enemy Within I just never really messed with the Second Wave options. I guess you learn something new every day.

There are a lot of really interesting second wave options that can dramatically change the game. Highly recommend people check them out.

My lone suggestion is Long War. It's one of the best mods I've ever played for any game.

I'm a huge fan of close combat specialist. Tack gunslinger onto that with sprinter and dense smoke. You'll end up with a general badass who can run through enemies like a hot knife through butter. Very effective against mutons and chrysalids, and the kind of person you can just give a good pistol to and they'll be practically all set. My current playthrough has a soldier with over 100 kills with a similar setup.

Thanks to you jerks I bought Second Wave, enabled all additional options, and have had my ass handed to me a few times now. Good fun though - love the bio/mech additions.

Finally finished X-Com over the weekend. The final stage was tough, and I made it to the final part with just 2 guys remaining.
Anyone tried Xenonauts on Steam? Basically a remake of the original X-Com games - very, very difficult like those games, too.

I have played it some. It's really hard. It didn't take long at all for all of my interceptors to be pretty much obsolete and for my base to be attacked. It was pretty much a wholesale slaughter of my poor troops.

I wiped my entire squad on the first mission in my initial two attempts. I'm doing OK through three missions in my current attempt, but yeah, don't go getting attached to any of your little troopers.... Unlike the new X-Com, you can't keep your guys alive by playing smart. Luck, and lack of, is huge.

I really suck at this. It's my first play through, and I've had several missions where nobody survived. And nobody lives long enough to get promoted very high. 5 nations have withdrawn. I was hoping to build up a good squad before attacking the alien base, but it just ain't happening. And I think I'm on the easiest setting. My memorial wall takes a lot of scrolling to get through.

Bought the Board Game last week. Holy hell is it fun!
It uses an app with it that makes every game a different game. You can play solo or with up to 4 people and every one is part of Xcom from the commander, to Scientist, central office and Squad leader. I thoroughly have enjoyed it as has my girlfriend and her son.

The key to the terror missions is to move only as quick as you can without getting overrun by chryssalids or those disc things. Sometimes you don't get to save a lot of people, but I think it still lowers panic across the board as long as you finish the mission.

I find that a combination of assaults with close combat (whatever the one is where if an enemy gets close they shoot them) and snipers with the ability to go on overwatch after moving are critical. You really need to be killing the chrsalyds as you encounter them. Then run like hell once you trigger the bomb. |

I would think heavies would be most important. I wouldn't want to use a lot of assaults on that mission, with chrysallids you need to kill them from distance.
I don't think the mission is that hard compared to some others, but it does require patience and firepower. |

Finally cleared the fishing boat/chrysallid mission. The way I did it was to take my weakest member and sacrifice him. He dashed up the stairs immediately and all the way to the goal in the boathouse. Meanwhile, the other five laid back in overwatch. They provided enough support for him to get up there and activate the bombing run. Then the other five soldiers ran all the way to the evac zone, getting there with three rounds to spare. The guy in the boathouse basically made a suicide run to the opposite end of the boat, pulling enough of the chrysallids away to give the others enough time to get out.

My 6 year old and I tag-teamed the first X-Com (Xbox 360 version rather than the true originals) and just completed it today which he was really excited by (played on Normal, lost 23 soldiers along the way). His first request was to upgrade to Enemy Within and so we started that one this evening.
I hadn't read anything about it but I did click on all kinds of options (a couple specific storylines, lots of the random stuff and second wave) but we're still going on normal (want it challenging but now overly frustrating for him. Even for me though, there seems like enough changes/new stuff that it'll feel wholly different. |

Between this thread and Brian Swartz' dynasty I've restarted Enemy Within. It's going well but I can't get any Assault class, just tons of Support and Heavy with a handful of Snipers. One Assault guy out of 17 soldiers right now.

I've been getting big into Xenonauts. First couple playthroughs were disastrous, getting used to it thought. It's a lot of fun.
Not sure I could go back to XCom now. But I certainly played the hell out of XCom and enjoyed every second of it. Last edited by jeff061 : 04-23-2015 at 04:09 PM. |

Haven't played through it all yet. You get multiple bases, more troops, more options, more everything, more out of combat management and "stuff".
That doesn't necessarily mean you get more replay once you play through it, but it does take far longer to master everything. I'm not sure I could have gotten into it without XCom as a primer. My understanding is it's much more faithful to the originals, but I never played the originals. Last edited by jeff061 : 04-23-2015 at 05:36 PM. |

Yeah I haven't done a serious xenonauts anything but that's what I've read as well. XCom is a spiritual successor, xenonauts more of a direct update of the original.
