Yeah, I don't think AlexB's edit post was about racism. But please tell me how Rainmaker's post, which you quoted and responded to, about headstarts in the middle of posts talking about how to think and deal with racial differences in success was not about race.

If you have decided that only white people have headstarts and only black people have disadvantages, I simply cannot help you.

So you think Rainmaker's post was about all people having headstarts, or in the midst of a conversation about race, it was about the headstarts white people get?

And furthermore do you think all people who do not have headstarts (whether due to class, race, gender, country or origin) aren't even trying?

I don't think that's the point? The point is that by-and-large, many, many more White people get that head start. Not that absolutely no Black people ever happen to be raised with (some) privilege.

Well, we let one Black start from the "easy" line. Guess our work is done here.

I know there's a decent number of people who don't have headstarts aren't even trying.

I also know that there is a decent number of people who don't have headstarts who are excelling.

And even a decent number of those that end up in "alternative" schooling also end up excelling past where they "came from".

So which is it? The folks who aren't winning aren't trying or a "decent number" of non winners aren't trying? And what percentage is that decent number you'd estimate? If it's a "decent number" then that implies that there are people who try and don't win, right? So then why would you ask a non winner if they weren't even trying? Do you think that no obstacles matter in the relationship between trying and winning? Or if you do, which obstacles matter?

A non winner is one who isn't trying. If you are beating people up, robbing, murdering, otherwise maiming people, selling drugs then you aren't trying. When you go to school and you try, you improve your life. I have not met or interacted with a single person in my life (And remember, I've had the fortunate reality of meeting people from literally every single walk of life due to my profession), that has regretted graduating high school.

So is your position is everyone who isn't winning isn't trying? There is no one out there who is trying but isn't winning?

Because Rainmaker's post talked about people running the race who weren't winning.

If you are losing, you are not trying. Yes. Do you think it is too much to ask to not murder, rape, or otherwise maim another human, or sell drugs?

Do you think all people who are losing are murdering, raping, maiming people or selling drugs? What about the mom working 3 jobs and still is barely making above the poverty line? Is her losing in the race of success due to her committing some sort of secret violent crime?

So let's go back to Rainmaker's post that you replied to where you said you would ask why aren't you even trying:

You either want a meritocracy or you don't.

And now you are claiming:

Do you want to rephrase? Because apparently you had no idea what Rainmaker's post was about.

Though I'll have to say I'm impressed by the commitment to the backtrack. But even you have to realize just how ridiculous you sound.

If selling drugs makes you a loser, how do we reconcile all of the people in the marijuana business now, including a former U.S. House Speaker?

Maybe your statement would have more meaning if you used a more acceptable line of work as your example

The Sackler family is worth $13.5 billion and have generations that will never have to work a day in their life. I'd say that is a drug dealer who won.

Tough to reason around the handful of shootings at these protests. I am kinda surprised at the relatively lacksadaisical media coverage....I think everybody's been kinda dreading a shooting happening at these events and how it could set off some kind of powder keg, but several protest-related shootings have happened and they're really not getting all that much news play from any outlet.

To wit, the top headline on FoxNews.com is about some loaded magazines being found abandoned in a park near the Portland protests....you would think people actually being shot would merit more coverage than the potential of people getting shot? Obviously civilians shooting each other is different than conflict between civilians & police/troops, but it's certainly still something I am concerned about.

That said, I did have a fear that shootings would potentially start a domino affect and that the media would of course feed into that, playing it up & highlighting any kind of action as some kind of race/class war shitstorm, and I don't exactly want to complain about that not happening either. Just feels a little odd that people have started shooting each other at these protests and it's being collectively presented as a footnote.

Because of that? I think that's quite an overreaction.

I support BLM's aim of reducing police violence and raising awareness of that problem while not favoring the implicit racism or the overt attack on their family that is a big part of their platform. I think it's only fair to recognize the things they are correct about, as well as those parts of the movement that are poisonous.

You had no part that supported it to begin with. And is Leveen someone big in BLM movement in Portland? Because that seems to be the only person mentioned.

Not to mention Kindergarten Cop is a terrible movie.

Amazing how this thread is either bumped for something really dumb to paint some protesters in as bad a light as possible or, you know, someone getting their brains beaten in. But, you know, logically equivalent.

This could go in the NBA thread too I guess. Cop was the one who initiated with Masai. Filed a bogus lawsuit and had collected a ton in workman's compensation for a fake injury.

Hysterical that the Sherriff's Department is still saying Masai was the aggressor.

Is it paranoia if the cops really are spying on you?

Activists find camera inside mysterious box on power pole near union organizer’s home

Quote:
A fellow activist got suspicious, climbed a ladder, opened it up and discovered a camera inside. Cathey told FOX 13 it was pointing in the direction of his family’s property. “I am pretty sure they were most definitely surveilling me and other activists that meet on this street with me” said Cathey.

After five emails on Monday and Tuesday MLGW [Memphis Light, Gas and Water] sent this response:

“The camera in question was actually an MPD covert camera they installed temporarily and did not go through the normal attachment process. MPD would normally handle a covert camera installation through MLGW, however these cameras were only temporary for MPD and can be put up quickly and removed quickly by MPD as well.”

Of course, in a city that has already gotten in trouble a bunch for spying on black reporters and activists for years:
The Police Have Been Spying on Black Reporters and Activists for Years. I Know Because I’m One of Them. — ProPublica

I'm throwing this here instead of the NBA thread

Sources: Players association in active talks with players about logistics of potentially boycotting games

So boycotts usually have some kind of goal right? They end when some sort of action is taken.

So what would be the endgame here? What exact demands would they make?

Yeah I dont understand the intent, maybe they just havent expressed their viewpoint yet.

Same with the Detroit Lions walkout yesterday.

Its a situation where I 100% support their message, but oppose their method.
Maybe Im just jaded, but I see NFL players who make very good to great money and their only primary job responsibility is a couple hours a day right now. To refuse to practice and complain about the issue is less impactful to me, than to come out after practice and give up your most valuable asset, your free time, to make your point.

Again maybe Im alone, it just felt weird to me. 'I feel so opposed to this horrific treatment I am going to refuse to work as a pro athlete' that doesnt sound like a message that is very empathetic and effective to most listeners.

Reminds me of the kids who are too sick to go to school bust just fine to practice after school.

So boycotts usually have some kind of goal right? They end when some sort of action is taken.

So what would be the endgame here? What exact demands would they make?

As it said in the article it seems this is more about wanting to express their pain. Kind of like after 9/11 where baseball games were canceled longer than necessarily needed to provide safety - it was just felt like it wasn’t right to play baseball right after.

I don’t know if the NBAPA has programmatic changes beyond that - individual players may have some things they want (ending qualified immunity, etc).

What were the exact demands of the Selma marches?

I saw the video of the militia guy responsible. Also caught on video was police being very chummy with the militia guys, giving them water, and letting them know they were going to push the protesters their direction.
