Top Gun: Maverick (& part trois)

Trailer looks great. Flying F-18's doesn't quite seem right though, not bleeding edge.

I think there is a fair chance I'll be disappointed but I'm a Tom Cruise the-actor fan.

'Top Gun: Maverick' trailer sees Tom Cruise soar into action | CNN
Quote:
The trailer for "Top Gun: Maverick," the long-awaited sequel to the 1986 hit movie that helped solidify star Tom Cruise's heartthrob appeal, is ready to fly.

Judging by the trailer, Cruise's danger-seeking naval aviator has been busy since audiences last saw him. Though, his attitude also hasn't changed much. He's content with his life as captain -- even if, as his superior points out, he should be an admiral by now -- and living on the edge.

"Top Gun: Maverick," directed by Joseph Kosinski ("Tron: Legacy"), soars into theaters on June 26, 2020.

I think the plane stuff looks like it could be fun in terms of cinematography.

I don't like that even in that tiny preview it seems like they fell victim to the modern idea that a sequel should just be 90% call-backs to the original movie. He's wearing the jacket! He's riding a motorcycle! He's playing shirtless sports! He's singing in a bar! Yeah, I saw that movie already, it was called Top Gun.

That's one thing that really got my attention. It seemed the entire trailer was a teaser for scenes straight from the first movie.

Retro-fan service is about the only purpose the movie has I think. I mean, at least Star Wars with all the ham-fisted call-backs was re-launching a franchise for the current generation of kids. Are the current crop of kids excited about an action movie involving a fighter pilot? Maybe, but just feels like a very different climate today versus the mid-to-late 80s when these movies were hitting cinemas.

If there's one thing I know about the Navy, it's that they let 50+ year olds fly jets.

Funny, I just saw the trailer this morning since I get Kawasaki news and he's on two different Kawasaki motorcycles.

I don't care if it's similar to the first, gimme some more TG!

I'm in.

It did seem oddly derivative of the Rise of Skywalker trailer.

Googling and heard that Kenny Loggins is coming up with a new version of Danger Zone for Maverick.

I really hope they don't use tacky old US fighters as the supposedly high end enemy fighters this time.

I'm also wondering who there is to shoot down. Who's going to be the "bad guy". The US has so thoroughly dominated the air in recent times that no one will send their aircraft up against ours. Even Saddam parked his jets.

Just quick googling shows that there has been one US combat air victory in the last 20 years and that was against a Syrian aircraft.

Last part of the trailer showed mountains & snow. Not sure if that's where the conflict takes place but if so, that eliminates China, Asia area. Somewhere in Europe possibly.

Here's a YT analysis of the trailer. Pointed out a couple things of interest.

BTW - last I saw Val Kilmer wasn't looking too hot. I know he's in the movie and hope he "looks better". Have good memories of Iceman.

Saw some pics of her. Yeah, shallow but not a fit for this sequel.

Kelly McGillis Says She Wasn't Asked to Be Part of 'Top Gun' Sequel (Exclusive) | Entertainment Tonight

I'll just echo what you said last week: last pics I saw of Kilmer were brutal and I had no idea he was doing so poorly.

And here it is, out in the open.

Kelly McGillis Talks ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Slight: “I’m Old and I’m Fat, and I Look Age-Appropriate” | Decider
Quote:
When asked if “anyone reach[ed] out to” her about reprising her role as Charlotte “Charlie” Blackwood in the Top Gun: Maverick sequel, McGillis was clear. “Oh my god, no. They did not, and nor do I think they would ever,” she said. “I’m old, and I’m fat, and I look age-appropriate for what my age is. And that is not what that whole scene is about.”

“But that, to me — I’d much rather feel absolutely secure in my skin and who and what I am at my age,” continued McGillis, “as opposed to placing a value on, you know, all that other stuff.”

Arrgggh. Top Gun 2 release is now supposedly Nov 19, 2021.

I don't get it. It was delayed till July 2021 and you would think July is a great release date to get all the pent up demand. Nov 19 seems weird to me.

The sequel to 1986 hit “Top Gun” will now debut in theaters on Nov. 19, the day Paramount had planned to release Cruise’s seventh “Mission: Impossible” movie. That film was moved to May 2022, according to Paramount, a unit of ViacomCBS.

Probably avoiding having to compete with Black Widow, which just had its release date pushed back to July 2021 a few days ago.

Randomly flipping through YT stuff and saw the trailer (again). It ended saying a June 2020 release date. A little PO that it's taking so long. May 27, 2022 is the new date.

Bar room scene, someone dying in training, Goose's son, motorcycle scene ... yeah, pretty much the original formula but spiffed up. I know it'll be a good movie (I just know it!) but hope it's a great movie.

Unless there is another major mutation, this will be a first weekend release at the cinema for me.

******

Saw trailer for new Jurassic Park, looking forward to that one. Also saw Avatar 2 is coming out ... wife and I were both blah about that one.

Avatar 2 is gonna bomb so hard. It has no cultural capital left over from the success of the first one. This generation doesn't care about it at all.

I expect Top Gun: Maverick to be formulaic but fun. Cruise may be a little intense, high-strung, and possibly unhinged with the Scientology, but he generally makes consistently fun movies.

I think the scientific community now believes that, like birds, dinosaurs were warm blooded.

https://earth.yale.edu/news/were-din...shells-say-yes

Quote:
“Dinosaurs sit at an evolutionary point between birds, which are warm-blooded, and reptiles, which are cold-blooded. Our results suggest that all major groups of dinosaurs had warmer body temperatures than their environment,” said Robin Dawson, who conducted the research while she was a doctoral student in geology and geophysics at Yale.

----

The testing process is called clumped isotope paleothermometry. It is based on the fact that the ordering of oxygen and carbon atoms in a fossil eggshell are determined by temperature. Once you know the ordering of those atoms, the researchers said, you can calculate the mother dinosaur’s internal body temperature.

For example, eggshells of a Troodon, a small, meat-eating theropod, tested at 38 degrees, 27 degrees, and 28 degrees Celsius (or 100.4, 80.6, and 82.4 degrees Fahrenheit). Eggshells from the large, duck-billed dinosaur Maiasaura yielded a temperature of 44 degrees Celsius (111.2 degrees Fahrenheit). Both the Troodon and Maiasaura eggshells were from Alberta, Canada. Meanwhile, fossilized dinosaur eggs from the oospecies (a species classification limited to dinosaur eggs)Megaloolithus, from Romania, tested at 36 degrees Celsius (96.8 degrees Fahrenheit).

----

“What we found indicates that the ability to metabolically raise their temperatures above the environment was an early, evolved trait for dinosaurs,” Dawson said.

This guy (Kristian Harloff, some of you may know him as a stand-up comedian) is a good reviewer. He gushes over how good Top Gun: Maverick is. Called it a perfect movie.

Here's a quick reaction video he did with Mark Ellis coming out of his first screening of it.

It is longer between releases of Top Gun (1986) and Top Gun 2 (2022) than it was between the original Italian Job (1969) and the remake (2003)

Not that I ever watch new movies, but this is playing out to be one of those movies I don't see because everyone else loves it.

(Honestly, I'm not a big fan of Tom Cruise, military glorification, machismo, or 80s nostalgia. Really don't have any juice to see it.)
