Thanks, beautiful weather here today, in the mid 20's (High 70's), sunny. Just BBQ'n up some buffalo burgs and home made yam fries. Going to check out some of the festivities around town and some fireworks. Hope you guys get some excellent weather this friday.

Thanks for hockey, maple syrup, and Timbits.

Not necessarily in that order.

yeah, but it's treated in a weird way in Quebec. It's a "moveable" holiday, meaning companies can decide to take the day off at another day. I say "in Quebec" because there's a "national" holiday on June 24th in Quebec (I know, we're not a nation, they just called it that way) that is not moveable but they often move the July 1st holiday to better fit with weekends. That's what many workplaces I know around here have done, moved the off day to yesterday to make it a long weekend, so I worked today.

I believe the off day remains on July 1st for most other provinces, but I'm not sure...

Companies in Manitoba can take an employee vote to move the holiday. So my current company voted to take June 30th off to create a long weekend, rather than work Monday and then take Tuesday off. I voted against that, it felt like horseshit. We don't move Christmas to a Monday if it falls on a Tuesday, do we? Seems dumb. I ended up working from home on Monday and then taking yesterday off like a normal person to be with the rest of my family.

As for Quebec, isn't July 1st "Moving Day"? Or is that just Montreal?

regarding moving Canada Day to another date, for a long while at my workplace, it was moved to a day between Christmas and New Year's to make it a full week off and we would not have a day off around Canada Day. Like you, I think it's stupid, but not surprising, at least not for Quebec. Kinda shows the usual lack of respect you'd sorta expect from the separatists, heh (which I'm not a part of, to be clear)...

And yeah, July 1st is moving day for all/most of Quebec. This is a simply stupid habit, really. You wait for your new place to be available while having to move out to make room for somebody to come in. Just a silly habit...

I lived in Montreal one year and this practice just blew my mind. I drove around that day and there were moving trucks everywhere, and people with loads of furniture just sitting on curbs, etc. Someone I was with explained that most leases come due on July 1st there, so that's why it happens. But still... so impractical.

absolutely stupid, but it's been that way forever. Was only when we lived in Massachusetts for 18 months in '96-97 that I learned that Quebec was the only place in the world who did that, heh...

We've been at our house for 13 years now and we had it built so we moved in around mid-June. We made someone happy with those couple weeks. Before that, I'd say were were pretty lucky and always were able to arrange the move a couple days early, but I've heard of horror stories. And the weather was nice yesterday but think about a day with torrential rains as we can have sometimes, makes for quite a mess...
